Oilers better? Bet on it

The General

Another Day, Another Dollar
Oddsmakers liked the moves made by the Edmonton Oilers at the NHL trading deadline.

The Oilers' chances of winning the Stanley Cup were listed at 30-1 on most sports betting websites after the acquisitions of goaltender Dwayne Roloson and forward Sergei Samsonov. They were 40-1 previously.

Moves made by the Montreal Canadiens had the opposite effect. After sending Jose Theodore to Colorado for David Aebischer in a swap of goalies, the Habs went to 60-1 from 50-1.

Best odds for the NHL championship rest with the Ottawa Senators (7-2), Detroit Red Wings (9-2) and Carolina Hurricanes (6-1).

The recent slide by Toronto reduced its chances so significantly (100-1) that the Maple Leafs now are considered as unlikely to win the Stanley Cup as Florida. The oddsmakers clearly believe that neither the Leafs nor the Panthers will make the playoffs.
