One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Took Azarenka/Bartoli parlay this evening, pays slightly less than 50% back. Both looked in good form in year openers.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Gajdosova giving Azarenka all she can handle.

Definitely two up and coming players here.

If Jarmila could improve her footwork, she has the groundstrokes to crack the top 50 and possibly top 25.

Probably someone I will be following and backing at the right spots this year.

Azarenka may break the top 10 if she can keep her head on straight.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka looked sharp in her quarterfinal straight set win and is a serious contender to win this Aussie Open prelim tournament.

She could be a serious darkhorse for the first grand slam as she is dialed in from the baseline right now. Needs to keep her head on straight and get a decent draw.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Who do you like in the finals here? Azarenka is almost a 2-1 favorite. I know Bartoli had some nice tournaments last year, but is Azarenka someone that can be mentioned with the top 5-10 this year?

You mentioned keeping her head on straight several times. Is she a Marat Safin in that way?

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Da Man,
Yes I like Azarenka. Yes I think she will end up ranked around 5 to 10.

She's not a complete head case like Safin, but still maturing and is developing the mental part of her game that separates the top level players from the tier below. Her physical skills are there just needs to keep focused.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka rolls Bartoli 3 and 1. Looking more and more like a serious contender and top 5 player soon.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Begining of year can be tough as you don't know where players are at as far as fitness and mentality.

However, if you do a little digging and watch you can find players in form early that will bring easy victories as was the case here.

She is at +5250 to win the Aussie Open right now. A decent bet that could be hedged down the road if she gets a good draw and makes the semis. I'd like to see her on the same side of the draw as Sharapova who is coming off an injury and may take some time to get into form.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Medibank International Sydney due to a viral illness.
The newly crowned Brisbane International champion informed tournament organisers of her decision today.
She has been replaced in the main draw by Karin Knapp of Italy, who will play wildcard Jarmila Gajdosova in the first round later today.
In women?s singles results, eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki has defeated Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova in convincing fashion 6-1 6-2 early on day two of the tournament.
Australia?s Casey Dellacqua hits centre court later this afternoon when she takes on Italian Sara Errani.
Other top names in action today include Tommy Robredo, Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Biggest match of the year so far as Azarenka puts her undefeated '09 record up against Serena Williams in the Aussie Open round of 16. This match could decide the winner of the tournament and if Victoria keeps her groundstrokes consistent she could pull off the upset.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka goes 2 for 2 with a convincing title win over Caroline Wozniacki in Memphis.

Two titles in two tournaments and the withdrawal in the Aussie Open versus Serena.

If not, for a stomach bug she could be undefeated on the year.

Things are shaping up for a big 2009 for Victoria.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka #8 seed in Indian Wells. Like the draw and can see her and Safina in a monstrous semi matchup.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka falls to a red hot Zvonerava in Indian Wells.

Today, Victoria reached the top ten ranking for the first time as well. I suspect that is only the beginning.

You want another upswinger its Alexa Glatch. She is only 19, missed 18 months from a dirtbike accident. was in the US Open as a 14 yr old. She beat navarro 3 and 1. She thinks she could beat serena in the 2nd round

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Smooth sailing into the semis in Miami for Victoria. Hoping for a rematch with Serena if she can get past Kuz.

Re: One to watch: Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka gets her revenge over Serena as she destroys her on the way to the title in Miami, 6-3 6-1. New career high ranking of #8 with a bullet.
