I think the odds on this fight should be covington as a short favorite. I see value in lawler. Only thing Covington really has going for him is an unbelievable gas tank and sustained high pace. Which dont get me wrong is a huge asset to have. Lawlers conditioning is not bad by any means. He has been through 5 round wars before. Covingtons gas tank is special though.

Covington's record is unimpressive to me, best win to date is demian maia. Who we've learned over time is an elite wrestlers dream (woodley, Usman, Covington). Negate his takedowns/bjj and Maia is a walking punching bag. Covingtons striking prowess is average at best. Uses punches and kicks more to set up the takedown, than to illicit damage. Extremely reliant on the takedown and seems more content to control position, pepper opponent, and take the decision. I have very little fear that this fight ends in a finish in Covingtons favor for this reason and also Lawler is extremely durable. Lawler has been finished 3x in the last 10 years. 1) Via Woodley who has probably the best 1 punch KO power next to Ngannou in the company, 2) Jacare by submission in 2011 when he was arguably the best BJJ/MMA practitioner in the world, 3) Jake Shields submission 2009, another super elite grappler. Covington lacking plus striking and flashing no high level submission skills on the ground, covington via decision is how I see him winning this fight 90+% of the time.

As far as Lawler goes, being a former champ/18yr vet, he has proven he can beat anyone on any given night. He has already defeated as decorated NCAA wrestlers in Koscheck and Johnny Hendricks as well as plus wrestlers like Rory. Lawler takedown defense over career is 70%.

Unlike Colby he possesses serious stopping power. 70% of his victories coming in the KO/TKO variety.
Lawler is coming off a two fight losing streak. He looked terrible vs Dos Anjos. Often times looking confused by Dos Anjos pace and could never really get into rhythm. Took a 1.5 year layoff and loss via controversial stoppage vs Askren. He looked phenomenal to me in that loss to a world class wrestler in Askren. Who most would say is a better grappler than Covington. My thoughts walking away from that fight was how did Askren survive the initial onslaught. Askren was outstruck 26-0! Lawler stuffed Askrens attempts, took Askren down and pummeled him. Looked to me like he emptied the tank on what looked like a for sure TKO victory. Somehow Askren survives, grapples, gets Lawler in a bulldog choke, and fight was stopped prematurely by Herb Dean. I see this losing streak as an advantage. He's faced Colbys only two attributes over the last 2.5 years. Cardio and pace by Dos Anjos which was a wake up call. More importantly preparing for another elite one dimensional grappler in Askren. Instead of a 6 week fight camp, he has essentially been preparing for this fight since January by fighting virtually the same opponent back to back (askren/Colby) and suffering no damage in the process (premature stoppage, zero strikes absorbed).

These two fighters are extremely familiar with each other having trained together at ATT for years. The fight is going to be won by who dictates where the fight takes place. On the mat or on the feet. Will Lawler get taken down? Highly doubt he stuffs all attempts. But I'm betting on Lawler using his wrestling background & prolonged prep to stuff enough takedowns and getting back on his feet when he does hit the mat, to take advantage of Colbys striking. Getting a KO/TKO finish somewhere along the way. If the fight goes the distance my guess is Colbys cardio takes over late and gets the nod.
