No, some places were already in a surge and continued that path, the other half of the country that was past their surge continued on their downward trajectory. If those holidays/family gatherings really caused a surge it would have been seen everywhere - especially where adherence to restricitons is less strict. None of that happened.

Since mid Nov - which was the peak in the midwest, hospitalizations in my area are down 65-80% everywhere.
Iowa from 1500 - 500
Mn 1900 - 600
ND 340 - 80
SD 630 - 200
WI 2300 - 900
No surge, no nothing . And most importantly there is no dicernable difference between states that are open or closed.
