Route 66

Just spent the last week traveling on "The Mother Road."

My favorite stop between Santa Monica and Chicago was the Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo, Texas.

I also passed through Oklahoma City where I visited Remington Park Casino and toured the Oklahoma City National Memorial.

The museum honors the 168 victims in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown OKC.

EOG contributor NEWPORT2 was right by recommending a visit to the memorial.

Currently visiting my hometown of Chicago where the bone-chilling temperatures are unbearable.

I'll be back home in Las Vegas in less than a week.

Timothy McVeigh loaded a Ryder truck with explosives and lit the fuse shortly after 9:00 on the morning of April 19, 1995.

The blast was so powerful the truck sank into a crater nearly seven feet deep.

McVeigh was eventually sentenced to death and he died by lethal injection in 2001.

His last meal: two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

John, did you need chains driving through Rocky Mountains?

I drove to Vegas a few years ago in winter and saw a sign saying you need chains regardless of weather conditions. Made it sound like you'd get pulled over.

some trip for this time of year

be safe.

It's a summer trip, for sure.

I liked the massive video screen in the Remington Park infield.

The racetrack was dark but the casino was packed.

Casino gambling is alive and well in many states.

Three straight.

When in the company of my sisters, they keep me on the straight and narrow.

Next week, I'm on my own.

The constant begging (Collections 1 and 2) turns me off.

The Catholic Church is one of the richest institutions in the world, yet the priests are taught/trained to claim poverty at every turn.

I traveled the southern route using I-40, not I-80.

I'm hoping to never use chains on my tires.

I never hear him but I assume former TVG host Chris Kotulak plays well to the Oklahoma faithful as a commentator at Remington Park.

My phone says it's 0 degrees in the south suburbs of Chicago.

And that's not accounting for the wind-chill factor.

34 forecasted as a high in Toledo 8 days from now. That’s a heat wave after highs of 5 between now and then. I’ll be running naked in the street

Do sportsbooks here in Las Vegas that charge you to sit down turn you off?

As you go through life JK you will encounter a lot of things that turn you off.

Comprende?

Re: Route 66

I took the 40 going to Maine last year and thats basically rte 66 these days. I wont hit it this time around as I am going up through Colorado on the way over.

But I hit a few spots. The one I didnt and wished I had was Winslow Arizona but I was running a little late and wanted to hit Santa Rosa before midnight. I did stop at he petrified forest for a bit though which was just passed Winslow.

I will pick part of it up at St Louis but anything east of the Mississippi is meh. Those little shit towns in Az and NM are the best.

I am heading back to Maine with some stops along the way to slow it down and let it warm up Leaving Ca maybe Thursday now was going to be Wed. But no hurry to get east of the Rockies at this point.

I stopped at Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Company in Holbrook, Arizona.

Impressive store.

Walked 4 blocks...the mucus in my nose was frozen in 1 block, my jeans were frozen after 3 blocks, pure torture to be outside this morning...pit of misery.

Why would you leave relatively warm Las Vegas for Chicago JK?

The fact it happened on April 19 is no coincidence

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20. I know because so am I (How ironic my B-day is 4-20 and I have never touched that stuff and never will - but that is another topic)

My thought is: Things happen on/near April 20 to "honor the great man" Hitler. Columbine - April 20

These deranged lunatics know Hitler's B-day is April 20 so they choose to do things they think their hero would appreciate and approve of

Hello Joe.

The 72-ounce sirloin looked too big for me.

I ate a 27-ounce ribeye and I was stuffed.

Three people took the challenge in the 90 minutes I was there and all three failed to complete the meal in the allotted time (60 minutes).

Only five people completed the task in the two weeks prior to my visit.

And three of the five people weighed more than 300 pounds.

How do I know?

There's a winner's list in the front of the restaurant with several notes for each winner and one of the 300-pounders ate his 72-ounce steak and sides in 32 minutes.

A fella goes by PO69 accomplished the feat in 17 minutes inclusive of one entire pecan pie.

Stopped for White Castle on the way home.

Did you go by the infamous Cadillac Ranch? Terrific ride - did not see how you broke it up - with one or two overnight stays. The times I did it straight thru with a 22 hour drive was just too much.

Re: Route 66

doing the whole tourist thing. hit the meteor crater, the corner in winslow arizona, stopped at a few trading posts, stopped on the continental divide, drove through old town albecrackie, and santa rosa.

not sure whats on the agenda for tomorrow so many tourist traps probably hit the dinosaur museum here in tucumcari. I have done quite a few of the things along the route I have driven it a few times now. Every time more and more places are shut down or torn down. anyone that cares about it is at least mid 40s and most in there 60s. dying americana.
