Someone please explain how Yankees locked up the East?

I thought Boston and NY were tied coming into this game. If Boston wins tomorrow, aren't they forced into a playoff for the AL East?

I think NY clinched playoff spot, not the East.

Or it may have to do with that rule, that if both teams are in the playoffs, the division winner is determined by head to head season record if they are tied.

Loman is correct. If Bos wins tomorrow they are in the playoffs. In that scenario the division winner is decided by season series record. NYY is the East champs.
