Taking a few weeks off from this situation

Depressing shit watching any news, reading any posting forum and really just going out to see people panic like 2 year olds when they can't buy pasta or dish soap. Getting on a plane tomorrow, I know real daredevil shit, and getting out of the US for 3 weeks. If they close the border on me maybe it's a blessing in disguise. But holy shit this society is a freak show and while I'm sure there is nonsense south of the border, people still have some civility there.

I'd advise you all to take a few weeks off from media and talking nonsense too.

I've been wanting to go to Buenos Aires in our winter, their summer, for a while.

Even had this coffee shop picked out on a particular street, which escapes me at the moment, where I would sit on a late summer evening, enjoying the sun still being up and, shall we say, the scenery, while loosely perusing something by Jorge Luis Borges.

Don’t come to Thailand....the government is thinking about closing all the clubs here...will know more tomorrow....75,000 women possibly out of work.....

Hey, I can take in about 6 or 7 of them, after a 14-day quarantine of course . . . since I can't make it to Buenos Aires just yet.

My cable package here in Costa Rica features CNN as its only English-speaking channel.

I recently placed all sharp objects in the shed for the next two weeks.

Travel safely, WildBill.

Slight edit to WildBill's thread title.

Changed "shit" to "situation."

I like to keep the thread titles neat and clean.

You have to draw a line somewhere.

Best decision I have made so far this year. Border is "closed" but fuck it, I'll just stay longer. Not much work to do and not like I can go see clients or casinos anyways. You all would benefit from getting out of your pits of depravity and enjoying different scenery.

did he join fat artie at pedofile island aka thailand?
Thailand is not an island you moron....

The government here recently made it very difficult to enter and leave the country...all the bars and clubs are closed and they are talking about closing all the restaurants and making them take out and delivery only...no seats....in effect until April 12th....probably last longer....

Same going on in Latin America and the people are slowly accepting it. I could still get back into the US from here if I fly or took a bus to the border and walked across, but I don't see any benefit in being there. I have a nice world class private hospital across the park from me if I actually needed it and its highly unlikely to ever be over capacity since most Mexicans use the public health system, but just staying inside mostly like everyone else and going over to walk in the park a few times a day. The nearby Walmart and Soriana are still pretty well stocked with everything except hand sanitizers and bleach. The people here haven't fallen for the stupid run on toilet paper, can still buy it anywhere. Even bought some pasta, something I noticed was gone from Walmart in Denver.

Stay healthy, WildBill.

I'm going to heed the advice of the State Department and return to the States this week.

The virus is not a big deal in Costa Rica.

Only two deaths from 194 cases.

Yeah, I'd have to think about that, too, John, although it's of course your call to make.

If you were a tourist stranded overseas on a short vacation trip, or an American stranded in a country that was experiencing an extensive outbreak, that would be one thing.

But you more or less have been in a settled "second-home" type situation in Costa Rica if I understand things correctly, where they're not having any extensive outbreak at this point.

This thing spread around the world so rapidly in large part via people traveling in the international air transportation system. I drove to Reno back on 2/18 rather than fly because I didn't trust the virus safety of air transport then, and the stuff hadn't nearly hit the fan yet then in terms of public and official perception here in the US.

And once you get here, they're shutting everything down; and as Bob notes, it's getting harder to find essentials. Part of the uncertainty (speaking for myself not Bob) is how much more draconian curfew, quarantine and/or lockdown measures might be imposed as they try to slow the spread of the virus so that it doesn't overwhelm the health care system like it did in Wuhan and is doing in Italy. So you don't know how long you might be able to go out as "freely" as we can right at the moment to get essentials, what will be available when you do go out, and what viral exposure risk -- or even risk of violence -- you might face when you do go out.

They shut down the freakin' casinos for, at least, 30 days. The casinos, the lifeblood of this state.

So I don't know what the situation is on the ground in Costa Rica -- or what it will be in three months or six months -- but it very well could be better than the situation that you're flying into, along with the risk inherent in the travel itself these days.

So I'm kind of with Viejo on this one, although I'm not in your situation and it's of course your call to make.

City of Denver just ordered liquor stores and recreational dispensaries closed. Imagine if that went down in Vegas, people would start using all those guns they have been buying. Are you sure you want to race home that badly?

My timing has been impeccable (and lucky), my condo closes on Thursday. When I agreed to buy it the dollar bought 19.1 pesos, now it buys 25.3 pesos. What was going to be an $89,000 purchase is now going to cost about $67,000 if this rate holds up. Where else in the world can you buy a 1,400 sq ft brand new built condo on the 12th floor in one of the nicest parts of a city with 2 million residents for less than $50/sf?

CRC generally doesn't fluctuate much against the dollar, maybe that's why you don't feel as compelled to stay JK. My life here just got much much cheaper and surely less complicated than being in a locked down city.

Lee's Liquor shut it stores down yesterday, stating that it was doing that in compliance with the gov's order.

The XO Liquor around the corner from my place was still open, but that place is much more like a convenience store in terms of what's in there than the Lee's stores. Convenience stores are excepted from the shutdown order.

And I think the pot shops still are excepted by the gov and open.

So no rioting yet . . . but it's a fluid situation.

Over and above that the virus hasn't seemed to take off as much in hotter locales with more UV, for whatever reason or reasons.

Wow when Lee's Liquor shuts down you know its serious. In Vegas its not quite the issue it is in Colorado and other states where liquor sales are limited to liquor stores.
