Quick thought about ComptrBob's suggestion to limit the Octagon handicappers to three plays a day: The flow of this month's competition was extremely choppy.

Birdie emptied his clip (nine plays in one day) after FACTS opened the competition 1-5 and merely chased thereafter.

The fewer the rules, the better (of course) but Bob's three-game limit over a 24-hour period should be considered by the participants.

Birdie already voiced his opposition to the proposal.

Yeah, I only suggest a 3 pick per day limit for the benefit of the EOG and the readership.

Its nice to have some semblance of a real competition that is interesting to follow. Since EOG is adding to the pot, it would be good for the website. Rail kept an excellent pace until he was guaranteed the win. At this point, the day limit really wouldn't have made much difference.

i get it that its in eog's best interest to string these for 30 days...............i would do the same

but its not a real contest unless its money won.
and the cappers should be able to bet what they like

if railbird likes a +220 cbb dog he should be awarded instead of taking points
when he feels he didn't need it.

plus what if a game is sitting at -112,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,does that mean no bet ?

overall the contest is fine
but if its baseball

if i'm 17-13 plus 10 units
thats better then 19-11 plus 4 units

just saying..................

sure you will get players chasing +250 dogs to try to catch up

but i'd love to be in that spot...............a lead
and a opponent chasing huge dogs to get closer

just my thoughts

Thanks for your input, Joe.

We soon will need to devise a system to deal with Major League Baseball.

The MLB regular season is set to begin March 20-21 with a pair of games between the A's and M's in Tokyo.

EJD suggested a range of -200/+200 with baseball selections.

Hmmm...

You were correct on both counts, JK.

My initial suggestion was +200/-200, but there's so much competitive imbalance in MLB these days that I decided to expand it.

Just trying to keep as much of the board in play as possible.

A capping contest should be that...let the plays fly.

For baseball how about starting with a make believe bankroll. Straight bets. Start with a 3k roll (could be 1k or 5k....just start somewhere).

I dont like limiting plays per day since all days arent equal. A Cbb is the biggest day of the betting board while a Sunday is limited. Saturday could be a 9 bet day.....just saying.

what sporty said.

in baseball............i like to bet team totals
yes/no 1st inning run
1st half

and i like 2nd half if its likely there is no bottom 9th
and pitch counts are low
with a solid closer

it gives me 3 innings instead of 4
if i have 7-8-9 due up in the 6th i can steal another half inning.

baseball is a different animal

shit i bought 2 houses saying Tommy glavine would give up a run in the 1st inning
after the 1st inning he's a hall of fame pitcher

there's many like that today in baseball

contest bets should be bets your making with your own money

and the starting with a bankroll...............for 30 days i think
is the best way to do it.

i figure if i lose a contest that i'm plus 6-7 units
i'd gladly play a dime to collect 50-60 k
but i it least know i'm betting what i like
not what i have too,

just my thought

Great call on Glavine Factsman. Those were the days when we knew he struggled in the first inning but the oddsmakers hadn’t adjusted properly.

Any contest should be what both parties agree to going in. If you don’t like the parameters, then don’t participate.

I think Sol hits the winning note.

The Octagon's rules should be flexible and negotiable.

Like boxers who negotiate ring size, glove size, location of the fight, judges, etc.

I'm expecting an excellent event in February when Birdie squares off against a soon-to-be-announced opponent.

I'll save a summer month for FACTSMAN's return to the Octagon where he can wheel-and-deal in a similar fashion with the way he likes to bet.

The bankroll idea from Sporty is a winning idea.

I expected nothing less from Sporty.

How many weeks ago did I say this exact same thing! The bankroll idea is also something I said MONTHS ago

I was suggesting a bankroll concept for money line sports like baseball and hockey, not football or basketball.

Carry on.

Moneyline contests dumb it down by allowing talentless handicappers take large chalk
Arent they simply punished on a loss then. The risk reward is the equalizer.

I dont believe you bet the same on all plays as you probably have a stronger feel or insight to certain teams which would lead you to bet stronger in certain situations. Flat betting is a beginner's way of betting.

the oddsmakers keep track of how many favorites win in each sport and which ones. They maybe slow to adjust on some favorites prices -130, -145, -170, -195, -240, -275 etc , but they do adjust . People would catch on who have a large database

One way to get Baseball to -110 is with Run Lines and Alternate Run Lines. This would also allow Baseball to mix in with
Basketball and Football picks for straight Win-Loss competition.
