Las Vegas Strip violence causes security, room rate increase

Updated September 8, 2020 - 4:25 pm

Several fights over the weekend along Las Vegas’ tourist corridor have caused at least one casino operator to increase both security measures and room rates in an effort to quell the violence.
Capt. Patricia Spencer, head of the Metropolitan Police Department’s downtown area command, addressed the media Tuesday afternoon to discuss the multiple events along the city’s tourist corridor over Labor Day weekend.
On Friday alone, downtown area command arrested 28 people and issued 27 citations. Spencer declined to offer details on where the incidents took place and did not offer figures for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“People coming here to have fun and take part in the festivities … we welcome you,” she said. “For those of you coming here to prey on the tourists or residents of this community, it will not be tolerated.”
Greg Mullen, vice president of CDC Consulting, said much of the violence among Las Vegas visitors in recent weeks is directly tied to casino-resorts’ low room rates.
‘Uncharted waters for Las Vegas’
As occupancy rates have plummeted post-pandemic, casino operators have had to offer low room rates and travel incentives to more customers in their database, instead of solely targeting high-value customers.

According to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the average daily room rate in Las Vegas was $104.39 in July, down 18 percent from the previous year.
“Cheap retail rates for the hotel rooms (and) free rooms are going to the players that have never had free rooms in Las Vegas,” Mullen said. “They’re going deeper in their database to get players who aren’t as lucrative, because it’s better just to get a body in there.”
Mullen said maintenance calls due to the destruction of rooms are at an all-time high at some high-end properties.
“This is uncharted waters for Las Vegas,” he said.
Encore incident

Videos of violence among tourists have been circulating on social media. A video titled “Fight in ENCORE HOTEL LAS VEGAS LABOR WEEKEND 2020,” posted to YouTube on Sunday, amassed nearly 31,000 views by Tuesday evening.
The video shows people within a hallway swinging at other guests and casino security as a crowd watches. The visitors eventually disperse, leaving behind a velvet rope toppled to the ground.
Wynn Resorts Ltd. spokesman Michael Weaver said the company is increasing its room rates and investment in its security workforce and procedures after a fight broke out at Encore over the weekend. The company has no record of injuries from the incident.
Weaver said the changes are being made to ensure Wynn’s two Las Vegas properties, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, “maintain the guest experience standards for which (they) are known.”
Changes include more security throughout the resort and additional uniformed Metropolitan police officers. The properties will also scan all hotel room keys at elevator entrances so that only registered guests are admitted to the hotel towers.

“An otherwise calm holiday weekend was marred by a disruption created by non-hotel guests in the Encore casino,” Weaver said. “Security officers and others currently prevent groups of unrelated guests from gathering to ensure appropriate physical distancing; with their increased presence, Wynn security will allow no exceptions.”
According to Hotels.com, room rates at Wynn Resorts started at $197 for a stay Saturday, Aug. 22. Rates jumped to $349 on Aug. 29, then to $499 the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Room rates this Saturday start at $319, according to the company’s website.
Wynn CEO Matt Maddox told investors last month the company is focusing on promotions and casino revenue, as nongaming revenue was down about two-thirds in the second quarter.
“We’re doing everything we can to get heads in beds,” Maddox said, adding that the company didn’t plan to “cut (its) way to better margins” at the risk of hurting its brand, culture and company.
Risk of tarnish to Las Vegas’ image
While it’s easy to pinpoint low room rates as the cause of Las Vegas properties’ spike in violence, solving the issue isn’t as easy as bumping prices.
Mullen said resort executives will need to manage a balancing act between setting prices high enough to keep out less-desirable guests, but low enough to maintain a decent occupancy rate amid the pandemic.

It’s a struggle that’ll likely go on for months. Las Vegas room rates aren’t expected to bounce back to 2019 levels until the return of conventions, concerts and other forms of entertainment.
Mullen said the way resorts handle the unrest today could affect Las Vegas’ reputation for years to come.
“Several of our higher-end profile clients say their high-end guests are done coming until this is under control,” he said. “They’re scared to walk outside their rooms, and don’t feel safe on elevators or on the casino floors themselves. It’s a bad look. … You can really severely put a tarnish on Las Vegas.”
A spokesperson for MGM Resorts International said there were “no major incidents involving guest melees on our properties this past weekend.”
Las Vegas Sands Corp. spokeswoman Alyssa Anderson said the company has a “very robust and progressive security program in place,” and declined to provide further information on The Venetian and Palazzo’s security protocols.
A spokesman for Boyd Gaming Corp. declined to comment when asked if the company had also seen violence erupt at its properties. Spokespeople at Red Rock Resorts Inc. and Caesars Entertainment Inc. did not return a request for comment.

They act like " the people are there fighting and wrecking rooms cause of $200 savings " total BS.... Like they planned the fight lol. Hotels are printing this BS.

Yeah weirdest article ever. The room rates have something to do with it, but its just a change in the crowd driven by far fewer people flying, no business people going to Vegas and those lower rates. Bringing in the "ice cooler" crowd. I heard today of a 22-year-old that my wife works with going to Vegas next weekend. 10 girls, all under 25, and they are driving from Denver. All over the West people going to Vegas because its cheap and because they want to get away, but doing it in a packed car. For those willing to fly, its round trips to Vegas for under $100 so it draws the same kind of people. That's the crowd that gets into fights in the hallways and out on the Strip.

Well if they want to take a public street and be treated like a moped, they need to wear a helmet. If they don't want them to be considered vehicles, then they can't be in the street with vehicles.

They have to lower the odds to get the looters to bet ... 🤪

Their favorite game now is to offer drink specials, which sound decent enough, but then you find out they charge you a Covid fee and a facility fee, and whatever fee they conjure up this week, so your $4 beer becomes $5.50 and the server is going to be mad if you don't tip generously.

The covid fee was expected....all it is it's another cleaning tax.. when it gets busy you have covid-19 fee along with resort fees.. now you will have something . I would bet a room mask fee for each guest...this way you lose your mask they will have a mask for each guest..$14.99 fee ..per day...

There is no new Vegas, the low cost housing and cost of living ruined it a long time ago. I would know. I lived in a nice gated area
occupied by drug dealers and pimps. There are only three areas in Vegas now to live to get away from garbage. Southern
Highlands, Summerlin and some areas in Henderson. Lake Las Vegas is fine if you like Asians too. That's all folks.

Lol, yeah I put up with 15 years there before I had it. I still go back often for business, but every time I get on that plane to leave I feel very thankful I don't have to live there any more. The city has been very good to me from a career and money standpoint, but I think its like a number of cities around the world like NYC or Hong Kong, you move there to get ahead and then you get the fuck out and make sure you take a lot of money with you.

I went out to walk around the Strip last night, it really has gotten ghetto out there. More than I could have even imagined. Security and police are around, but pretty light presence. In the hotel I'm in its a very different crowd than usual. I'll refrain from saying which it is, but let's just say this place during weekdays would be filled with what you would expect, lots of older ladies and couples playing slots and pretty quiet otherwise. Now its tons of boisterous younger folks, many walking around in pool attire, mostly African American. The people who are over 60 are few and far between. The younger ones aren't gambling and don't seem willing to pay casino bar prices for drinks, but do seem to have a lot of drinks they brought in with them and the smell of weed is everywhere. And those scooters, its just comical how popular they are with people under 30. I don't think I have seen a person who really needed a scooter since I got here.

Its not even close outside of the casino book experience and perhaps the higher limits if you are a real baller. If FD and DK come to Nevada I highly doubt they offer anything like the sign up offers they give Colorado and pretty much every other state. They probably offer the basic $1 bet to win $100 on some big event and that's it, no match bonuses or $500/$1000 free play, every semi-sharp gambler in Nevada would go to town on those.

I lived there in Vegas from 1980-1995...with stops in Costa Rica and the DR.....I loved everything about Vegas during those years....now, not so much....I do occasionally go back to visit friends and enjoy a week or two there....Amazing how Vegas has changed in the last 20-40 years....

I remember vividly the early 90s when I first lived here. The Las Vegas Sting at the MGM, first time I ever saw betting windows outside an arena and I thought it was great someday we'll all be able to bet on games we attend. I ended up following AFL and going 15-3 betting on it, I remember a proud moment I made a limit bet ($200) on a game at Imperial Palace and Jay Kornegay himself told the clerk to move the line. Felt like the sharpest dude in town that day, I laid 6, line closed at 10 and my side won by 23. The good ole days where you had to pound the pavement to find the best numbers.

Then the CFL showed up for a year and at their opening game I loudly announced to some friends I was with that someday an NFL team will make Las Vegas home. People laughed at the thought for many reasons, but shit if it didn't just happen. Too bad I hate the Raiders and don't really care about Vegas any more, but amazing things have happened in this inhospitable place where really few people should live in the summer months.

It was a 98% white town then in 1985. Reagen won nevada by 40 points

Investors Gamble on a Bidding War for William Hill
Apollo is facing off with former LBO Caesars Entertainment for U.K. bookie William Hill. The last time it got into such a situation, it ended badly.

William Hill is evidently open to a sale. With talks public, others may come in. So perhaps the market’s expectations will yet prove to be more than the gambler’s false optimism.

Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to implement metal detectors, restrict entry

After weeks of increased violence on the Las Vegas Strip, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is implementing several new security features beginning Friday evening.

Every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The Cosmopolitan will restrict entry to only those with reservations within the hotel or at a restaurant, or rewards members, and all guests will be checked with metal detection wands, according to a statement from the hotel-casino.

Specific doors have been designated for entry and exit, and the property will have Metropolitan Police Department officers at the doors. All bags will be checked, and “oversized alcoholic beverages or glass products” will not be allowed on property.

“The Cosmopolitan holds itself to the highest standard in creating a safe and welcoming environment for all of its guests and employees. These enhanced procedures are a continuation of our dedicated effort to protect the health and safety of all those who enter the resort,” the statement read.

The Strip has seen a recent string of violent crimes, including a stabbing in the shadow of The Cosmopolitan and a shooting across the street.

Local experts pinned the violence partly on low room rates and noted that casinos will be balancing profit margins for many months to come.

The traffic about now is backed up for miles at State Line like the old days. Despite the pandemic when
most families in So. Cal kick around what to do on the weekend, Vegas pops up first. San Diego too costly,
amusement parks closed.
