Great story, Sol.

Hard to believe they remodeled Desert Inn about a year before they imploded it.

The chairs in the sports book were the most comfortable in the city.

. . . .

Poker pro Brent Carter said he didn't want a job as a safety net because he wanted to keep the all-or-nothing mindset.

Too many gambless make poor decisions because new money is arriving in two weeks.

Show me a part-time gambler and I'll show you a full-time loser.

Nice line.

But I would suggest that if a biweekly paycheck would have a material impact on your bankroll, then you don't have a sufficient bankroll.

Either way. Working or not.

As Sharon Stone reportedly said when they asked her about the girl-on-girl scenes in Basic Instinct: “It don’t mean a thing without that schwing.”

– – –

Guess it worked out for Carter.

But I suspect that insufficient bankroll in large part tells the tale for many who don't make it.

In Sportsmylife’s particular situation, he’s obviously already pot-committed. So my point about working was directed more to his psychological wellbeing than to that of his bankroll.

. . . .

. . . Then at 4am driving to my air bnb I got pulled over by the cops for driving "erratic". Got asked a ton of questions, searched my vehicle, padded me down and such. I was on the good side of judgement as I didnt feel like having a drink tonight. But being up for 22 straight hours didnt help my look as the officers asked about my eyes about 50 times. They told me they were bringing in a drug dog as I sat on the curb and asked if the dog was going to smell anything. I said I had some summer sausage in the front seat. They didnt enjoy my attempt at humor.

I found it interesting how leading their questions were. He asked me if I had anything to drink yesterday just to use that as a reason to either make me take a breathe test or do the drunk gymnastics. Boy that was an interesting experience.

The whole event took about 45 minutes. Long day.

Well, congratulations, Sports, less than two weeks in and you've already met Metro, lol.

As an institution, they interrogate people 24/7/365, so it's perhaps best to not try and match wits with them after providing an ID, etc. and a few initial responses. I can't understand why people make the cops' case for them by running their mouths. Like the first group of about 25 guys who were pulled over for traffic offenses after leaving the massage parlor down in Florida, before the police then used their responses to get a warrant to put hidden cameras in the parlor. On Cops they're always putting the "innocent until (always thought that should be "unless") proven guilty" suspect in the back of the cruiser in handcuffs after they made the cops case for them. If they think they've already got a case made against you, there ain't nuthin' you can say that's going to make the situation better, only worse.

Stayed at sante fe sportsbook all day Sunday. Love the private TVs to watch anything you want. Nice food court. Made 9 plays. Zero drink tickets.

I got a drink ticket from a cgt property before a stations casino. What is this world coming to? Oh so the cocktail waitress comes around for drinks and I ask for one. She says are you a horse player? I say no but I have sports bets. She says sorry I cant. Boy oh boy.

So I'm not ripping on these books for not giving drink tickets for bettors. I dont always drink. But make the offer every once in a while. Christ a beer probably costs the book a quarter when you take into account the volume they bring in.

There is a ticket writer at caesars palace who offers up drink tickets to me like they are on fire. Just says "hey you want a drink ticket?" and before I can answer he's stamping 4 tickets and shoving them my way. I tip him.

Stopped in at the stratosphere. Boy they dont want anyone to bet there. Their book looks like something that was an afterthought. It literally looks like someone forgot to put the sportsbook on the floor and to make up for it moved some of the food court tables out of the way and went to a discount chair store and bought 12 sofa chairs. Jesus.

Poker is still alive and well. Played last night where a guy came in with the story that he got 5k in promo chips. Ran it up to 185k at baccarat. Went to eat. Came back and lost 7 straight hands at 25k each. Was playing poker to relax until midnight. Must have been when he got more promo chips. His poker strategy was 25 pre flop. All in on the flop. He bought in for 300. He busted kk with a runner runner straight and another guy w k high. Hopefully he ran well at the baccarat tables.

Signed up for Las vegas athletic club today. I figure I need some weight training to go along with my walking and sitting for hours on end. 36 a month is doable given what equipment they have.

Poker and sports totals will come on wednesday which will be the first 14 days in vegas.

One problem for Las Vegas sports books: They attract some visitors who want to drink and not gamble.

A $100 bet earns the house a theoretical $4.50 and the player suddenly wants six free drinks for his small group of buddies.

As soon as the waitress left a horse player says to me. Hey go make a $2 horse bet. Keep the ticket and drink for the rest of the day for free as they never check to see the ticket.

Well played sure.

Went to palace station sportsbook last night as this was the first place I ever stayed at in vegas. A very nice setup. Upgrades are very nice. Comfy chairs and a good betting board that includes the added games.

One good thing about watching a game at a stations sportsbook....when the crowd starts cheering while watching a game...and you are on the opposite side....you have a solid bet.

I used to stay at Palace Station myself the 1st 3-4 years I would come out till I realized there were better chairs to sit and watch games for multiple hours of the day. Then started staying at the Hilton and South Point as not only were the chairs more comfortable but these were a couple of the only books in town with 10c. Hockey and Baseball lines. I'm eager to see the new upgrades at the Palace Station Book as I liked the restaurants in there a well. If you can sneak some photos of the book I'd appreciate it. I think there was a Subway and a hotdog cart close the last time I stayed there and the buffet right up the escalator but that may have been one of the worst buffets in Vegas at the time. Landers favorite Asian place, the STeakhouse, the Mexican joint were all top notch and my favorite every morning for breakfast or a drunken late night sandwich was the Grand Cafe. I believe they are in every Station casino around town. Good quality food at a decent price. Veijo had me say hello to one of the workers at the Steakhouse he knew and I ended up watching quite a few games bullshitting with him a couple of years in a row. He would come down on his breaks and sit with me. I forget his name now. I'm sure Arturo remembers.

I'll get some pics. The subway is gone. The hot dog stand is gone. Even the poker room is completely new. Still only 6 or so tables but has been given an upgrade.

The opening odds start here
Last time I was there I think I saw 9 tables altogether, bur if I remember correctly they rarely spread a nl game. I usually saw a 2 4 2 6 limit with a kill or an occasional omaha game going on bur they do have bounty tourneys and free entries to others when you hit quads or better.

Last night watched games at the westgate sportsbook. That place is the nuts in terms of viewing. High back chairs with monster TVs that cover everything that is on TV. Just awesome.

Hit some bad capping in my young stay. Last few nights have had completely dead bets early. Syracuse, TCU, texas, Mississippi st in college with the mavs and golden st in the nba. A slight down swing.

Poker has been the good vice. Games are always good from what I've seen.

First week here was poker +788 and sports +550 for a total of +1338

Week two results. Poker +586, sports -582.50 for a total of +3.50

Total since coming to vegas.
Poker +1374, sports -32.50 total of +1341.50

The downswing this week in sports hasn't affected me mentally at all. I just say to myself that I need to dig a bit deeper in games. Plus there are better sports bettors than me who lose for a week at sports.

Something I'll do with the conference tourneys coming up is to cut my bets on half to account for the potential volume all day starting today.

A food update. The fresh market Buffett at the westgate was a pleasant surprise in terms of quality of food. Under $20 for dinner with a card.

I still want to try the Bellagio seafood buffet. Maybe a solid winning week could be my reward. Or the 24 hour buffet card for $50 is the way to go. Get 2 dinner buffets in the window. Besides if I do a buffet I only need to eat once a day.

Onward and upward.

Isn't that true at any sports book? BTW good luck in your endeavors. I'm living through you vicariously. LOL

If you have time, space out your bets. Or place the same bet a few minutes apart. Place two $55 bets instead of one for $110.

Ask for a drink ticket after every bet. Work the system.

If you tip a buck after every drink ticket, they won't give a shit about giving out too many. They will most likely give you double or triple next time you come up.

On a typical Sunday in the book in Vegas, I bet about $500. But come away with at least 10 drink tickets. Some dudes will go up there and bet $500 and come away with 2.

Just gotta learn to work the system.

The tip thing worked like gold. I tipped after my first bet at bally's. Next time I went to the window I got 4 tickets for 3 wagers. Tipped a couple bucks this time.

The thing that sucks for that ticket writer is that they split this.

Bally's sportsbook is an alright situation. Nothing outstanding but might be over looked which could be a diamond in the rough to bet during the madness as the book is on the deep end of the casino. Not connecting the poker room and sportsbook is bad design by bally's.

Make friends with a non drinker. If he bets a decent amount he'll have a pocket full of tickets every day. I am always friendly with the locals and pick their brain for info. If they see you drinking they will start offering. Worked very well for me.

Week 3 results.
Poker -569
Sports -167.50

Total for week -735.50

Totals since I came here.
Poker +805
Sports. -200
Total +605

Rough week. Poker had a rough patch. Second best hands gave me a bit of gun shyness. Sports in the same manner. Cap and get crushed from the start was a bit on the rough mental side.

A good nights rest helped a bit last night. But boy playing poker til 3am or 4am and then getting up at 8am to get to the Venetian before the 9am games can be some heavy ware on the mind.

Venetian sports book. Has all these 27" monitors but you cant watch games on as the system errors keeps showing up. Jesus christ.

Harrahs sports book. An ok hidden gem. Super comfy chairs that you can lay back in. Plus a nice spot for a Sunday nap...as people used it for an air bnb Sunday afternoon.

My new high. Finding a good number at the sportsbook triangle....ok I'll rename it the "square" as William hill is in the mix....and winning that bet by a half point. You feel a nice fist pump inside. That is quickly counter punched in your face when AA meets KK in the middle only to be gangbanged by another K.

Harrahs Sunday lunch buffet....solid b-. Good food and nice selection of desserts if you enjoy the sugar crash. But the price at $27 still isnt all that great.

I'll get at someone's seafood buffet soon and see how much lobster I can handle.

It's going to be a great week 4. Basketball all day long with the poker tables running with deep pockets.

Rio seafood buffet had "lobster", but remember it was like $40 bucks 2 or 3 yrs ago. I remember them being real small like 3 oz, I've had bigger Prawns.

Thought the Rio seafood buffet was decent food wise, but no value for the money.

At the old Rio seafood buffet that was at the other end of the property, their "lobster" was horrible. About the size you mentioned and bland as bland can be.

Air bnbs. Can find private rooms for about $30-$35 a night. That's about my only expense besides morning coffee as comps are covering my food. I do a daily fast so I'm a one meal a day guy right now.

Interesting approach. Do you find spots close to the strip? Are you needing to move around between places a lot?

Best and cheapest have been about 20 to 25 minutes from the strip. Found a great one out in Decatur. Tri level place. Bottom is a one bedroom place with full bath set up. Retired teacher who has a big fkn dog. Washer and dryer on the second level. I usually book multiple nights as it saves on service and clean up fees.
