Will We See MLB In 2020?

I expect at some point in late july or august some team will start letting in fans, they'll say we can fit 40,000 fans, we can safely put 10K in and spread them out.

MLB projects $640K per game loss with no fans.

When this is your starting point in negotiations its hard to believe the owners are going to give in on players demands.

What is the point of even playing?

Do the players really expect the owners to just give in and lose even more money?

What's the point? If you are a player you are one year closer to getting cut and having to find a real job. If you are young and still under a controlled contract you want to play to burn a year off and grow as a player. If you are older you get millions, if you only get half that it sure beats unemployment. If you are an owner you need to take a smaller loss and keep the network contracts in place.

Everyone has incentive to play except Blake Snell it appears.

I heard that a player does not want to get paid less for playing less of a season. Shit... if you dont want to get any pay then fine dont play. LoL

It isn't that the players don't want to play for half their salary but they are being presented with the idea of playing half a schedule and being paid a 1/3 or less of their salary.

The owners want to have a 50/50 split of the revenue for the remaining season with the players. Sounds good but given how the stadiums will be empty or with 25% of capacity that means the revenue is going to be slashed even more.

So instead of a player getting 50% of their $10M contract which is $5M they are earning whatever the revenue could be which could be much less.

The owners get the upside of their franchise growing and in this case I believe they should bare the downside of paying the team 50% of their salaries based on 50% of the season being played.

I wonder how many owners will vote for sports betting to be allowed AT stadiums to help revenue? Let greed run it's course.

Listening to Gill Alexander's show today, I have to agree that if the players don't return to play, this is 1994 all over again. This will be viewed as a strike. And the public WILL hold it against the players/owners/league overall.

Unlike 1994 when the players deserved a massive part of the blame I think here the people will be smart enough to realize the blame needs to be shared among all parties

And unlike 1994 MLB will NOT be missed. We will have the NBA playoffs as well as the unquestionable best playoffs, NHL, going on when MLB would be playing. Then when those 2 end we will see the NFL underway

MLB will NOT be missed at all if they do not come back. It will upset me as a Doyers fan because 2020 could finally be the season we can move on past Kirk Gibson's WS G1 HR in 1988................but now..............????????????

Agree WD. MLB will get squashed by the other sports. There's little upside to a short story of 2 months bases. TV revenue is all they essentially have. MLPBA will look bad in most eyes IMO.

But bullish on the NFL. There has to be some reason for the big run up in Draft Kings, isn't there?

I heard DK had an astounding amount of action on the golf event Sunday. DK was all over the telecast as well with on screen in game odds.

FW is on point with the bottom line however and with state incomes in the toilet I’d imagine their hands are going to be forced to quickly legalize.

I was speaking about the overall runup, not the gain from today. To go up that quickly, there's something else at work. The trending map of the virus that somebody put up yesterday, (it may have been Wild Bill) looks like it will just about be completely dead by September, just in time for the NFL season. For all the talk of a second or third wave, it is all pure speculation. The Spanish Flu and H1N1 had three waves, but both of those were influenzas. The recent coronaviruses have not had second waves. The NFL makes everything else pale in comparison re: betting handle.

Say there is a another wave. Would casinos just eliminate physical sportsbooks and go 100% online? Since Indiana was doing 85% handle with their apps, that’s some valuable real estate when you are factoring in social distancing.

The experts have no clue if there will be a 2nd wave, we have no idea what will happen 2 weeks from now. It's still May, if you had said 3 weeks ago that most of the country would be reopening people would have said you're crazy.

CA has it on the November ballot. That's cuz they are broke.
They might legalize it but wont have mobile betting since the tribes wont allow it.

The money is all mobile. NJ crushed it due to mobile. Dont at me about their bonuses and promos.

Nevada needs california.

Plus if cali does pass it expect -115 standard lines.

No, as I read it tribes and state will both run off a similar platform which will have mobile.

I have heard the hangup on this is that the tribes only want the mobile to be active if inside or on the tribal casino land/place.

Makes the mobile idea pretty much useless than.

As much as it brings out the worst in people, you can also see the good in some.

David Price of Dodgers is paying $1,000 to each minor league player in their system. These kind acts get me hard.

I agree though, mlb seems to be in jeopardy as we currently stand. Very aad.

Batting practice pitchers to wear masks. Maybe indoors in the Trop but ridiculous outside. 50 players on a team? That's stupid. The virus will get into some clubhouse, and wearing a mask for pitching BP not gonna do a damned bit of good.
On the CDC website it states that masks DOP NOT have any effect on this virus.

This has to change.... Why would I want to hang out in a Indian casino just to bet. During the pandemic they need it to go statewide no one in close quarters of a stinky casino

they been holding off if things got better. It won't . 40 million out of work. The violence has replaced the virus. It would be in bad taste to open the season. People cannot pay the cable bill.

The 40 million out of work are getting $600 more in addition to the regular unemployment. Some are making more money than before the pandemic. Others are working from home. Gas and transportation costs way down. So many shops were shut down, it would be difficult for many NOT to put money away. Nobody was vacationing. If people aren't paying their cable bill, it's more likely that they are choosing to dump it, and go with the likes of Hulu or Roku.

If MLB chooses not to go back this season, it will leave a lasting black eye on the sport.

extra 600 is till end of july...how will that help ?... remember unemployment works what you put in it over a series of quarters.

Who's going to wear the black eye, I think the owners and players have approached that line already.

I guarantee you a lot of those unemployed are making more money now. Come August, things will be different, but hopefully those have put some money away.

unemployment is never better if you have a good job... when you factor in pension / 401k/ annuity / taxes... unemployment is short term ...the other things are long term
