YOU'RE A GAMBLER . . . COULD YOU LIVE IN LAS VEGAS?

Most of us gamblers are from places where you wake up in the morning, go to work, come home and have a nice dinner, place bets on the computer and go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Could you live that lifestyle if you lived in Las Vegas? Alcohol is served legally 24 hours a day. Supermarkets have slot machines. Strip clubs, blackjack tables, ladies of the evening, sports books and bars everywhere!

Growing up in L.A., Vegas was an easy drive accross the desert. I came home broke 90% of the time.

I CAN'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's your opinion and if you do live in Vegas, tell us how you are doing . . .

Vegas brings out the discipline in me. Sportsbooks bring a certain clarity to my life that I don't get from staring at the Pinnacle Sports web site or calling in bets to my local.

The 24/7 action is invigorating, just knowing that there's action around me keeps me patient.

Most importantly, it's easier to walk away a loser without feeling the need to chase because I know I can get back after it later that day, the next day, or in a few days.

I am more prone to the "crack out" factor at home than I am in Vegas.

Re: YOU'RE A GAMBLER . . . COULD YOU LIVE IN LAS VEGAS?

I wouldn't advise living on the Strip. There are some new luxury condos up and down the Strip, but I think that would desensitize someone from enjoying it after a short time and could lead to excessive gambling based on proximity alone. I couldn't imagine living in a condo inside a casino or next to a casino. However, if you live a 10-15 minute drive away I don't think it'd be nearly the same problem.

Travelling to Vegas, the first night I couldn't sleep at all. I'd lay in the bed for 45 minutes, tossing and turning. Then I'd give up on sleeping, back to the blackjack tables!

And how can you sleep with the 24-hour buffet pass?

I think if you want to make it easy on yourself, you should live in Vegas if you are serious about it....

I seriously wouldn't get the sleep I'm getting where I now live. I guess after awhile, the novelty wears off. There's just something about Las Vegas Boulevard that gives me adreneline. Even their airport, which sits right on the strip if you can believe it, gets me excited.

I have lived in Las Vegas on and off for over 25 years and never had a problem gambling.

But that is because I don't gamble :btj:

I actually hate Casinos and their "crooked games of chance"

But love their sport books :cheers

I could do it. Not sure I could sell insurance there like here. It would have to be 100% gambling income. My son wanted to try selling cars there. Started out at a Chrysler/Dodge place. Didn't work out - he said car sales there are pretty high pressure, wham bam, thank you maam. You sell it or turn it over to your manager who does more of the high pressure tactics. No, here's my card - think about it - come back tomorrow - it's buy it now or piss off! And he could not do that style. We thought - wow - a lot of jobs there - cars will sell like hot cakes - wrong!

Anyway, I was there a couple of times during that time period - from his apartment and did pretty well. As well, as trips - 3-4 times a year. We are talking 50-60 trips over 10 years. But, guess what - my wife wasn't moving - kids want to go to school here. Me, I would have moved in a heartbeat. But, actually, nothing I can't do from here - even if I only get paid 90% of the time.

Las Vegas is a normal town once you get used to it. Like this morning. I got my haircut, got my oil changed, and then stopped by the local library to play some Video Poker.

And here I was thinking that I was the only one who gets exited at McCarran.

Does an airport need a gazillion slot machines? Does the airport pass their winnings on to the passengers in a form of lower fares?

No, they pocket each and every last cent...Airport gets their fair share but machines are owned by an outside company that has full-time employees just like the casino's....

About living and gambling in Las Vegas...Pepsi moved me and the wife here in 1997 after a long stint with them in Texas, the 1st 6 months it was like we were on vacation every weekend...hard as hell...then we bought a house out in the NW side of Vegas and never looked back...Haven't been nor planning to go to the strip in probably 4 or 5 years...Never been in City Center, Encore, The Wynn, Cosmopolitain and don't care to...The local casino's get our business, food, gambling and etc....Find a house you like w/ pool nice yard and the such And Vegas becomes just like your town you are currently living in...

Depends on your situation with offshore accounts. I'd rather have those and be able to live where you wanted.

Anyone lived in Reno/Lake Tahoe area? Could that be a better alternative to Vegas, if laws became so restricted offshore that it forced anyone who gambled seriously on sports to live within the Nevada borders?

Actually, Reno has a much nicer climate and is near the Sierra Nevada Mountains for supreme winter sports and summer mountain activity. Even in January, it's possible for a snowstorm or sunny and 60 degrees. Summers are ideal. A dry comfortable heat, not HOT like Vegas.

But on most weekdays, Downtown Reno is like a ghost town. Sacramento and SF Indian Casinos have siphoned off all the old and new customers who don't want to wast 2 full tanks of gas driving up there..

As soon as offshore is completely banned for US residents. I'm packing my bags and heading to Vegas. I'm already elgible to retire but will continue to work until offshore is cut off. The only thing about retiring is that I'm afraid that I will get bored to easily.

I tried it (more or less) last year. Leased a place on the old Sahara (now LV National) Golf Course for six months. But after six weeks I had to get outa town - just wasn't happy with no friends or family nearby for that long.

Then I went back for three weeks, then two, then 10 days, then five. I play craps and bet MLB. Was in the Hilton for MLB every day, and at various other casinos for craps for a few hours most days. Too much casino, too much drinking. Gained weight.

Because I consistently win betting MLB, I'd like to be in Nevada during the season if offshore totally colapses. But there may be another way. Leroy's now has a way to let you post up once, then carry a Blackberry to do your betting.... so long as you're within the boundaries of Nevada (it has a GPS built-in).

So now I'm thinking maybe do a deal with somebody (an EOGer?) already living there, and just email my picks to him every day. What do you think about a deal like that? Workable?

If you aren't disciplined and have the proper work ethic, it doesn't matter where you live. There are distractions in every realm of life.

Sans a rogue number here and there living and betting in Vegas really doesn't have much advantage. You can lay -110 all day long all over the country for much higher limits.

I would surmise the majority of groups that win end up with most of their profits coming from reduced juice pph's, matchbook, and Pinny.

Laying -110 is no joke.

Yes, and no. I love Vegas but in smaller doses. I'm not sure I could live there year round.

LOL. If we had the proper work ethic, we wouldn't be gambling. That's kind of the reason to gamble.

I dispute this.

Get lots of sleep, sure, but I love the 24/7 lifestyle. CVS, Vons, Subway, diners, card rooms, even sportsbooks are always open.

Don't go to sleep at a reasonable hour, go to sleep when you're tired, wake up when you're not.

It's not getting any better but You find way more off lines in Las Vegas then the whole off shore combined. Up to 2 years ago it was like taking candy from a baby, but now with no Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, Palms, and now Luckys and Cal-Neva, Leroys I'm sure it is getting harder to find the candy.

But like I said up to 2 years ago it was still a gold mine.

Like Fishbrain said

There's no place like it and if you are betting serious you have to be there.

I know I will probably have to move back there again.

Serious bettors have to either be in Vegas or have a person there that can make bets for them.

Also right on the first two...........

No better place to gamble overall in the U.S. than VEGAS(possibly RENO(machines) or FLORIDA(poker)..................overall, nothing close to Vegas, it's the major leagues of gaming.

As far as weather...............only select places in CA. can top it overall in my opinion.

FOOD and HOT WOMAN it ranks in the top ten cities with populations over 350,000...............
