Default Hearing on US Gambling Ban Tomorrow - If this is for real the glory days will be back

Hearing on US Gambling Ban Tomorrow

June 19, 2008

I got this in my email this morning. Apparently, Barney Frank and the gang are actually doing something.
Dear Randy,
Interactive Gaming News has learned that HR 5767, a United States bill co-sponsored by Representatives Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Ron Paul of Texas, is scheduled to be amended Thursday.
In its current form, the bill, introduced in April, would prohibit the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve from "proposing, prescribing or implementing" any regulations under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
"If enacted, the bill would strip the UIGEA of any practical effect," a source in Washington, D.C., who is closely acquainted with the legislation told IGN in April.
How the bill will be amended remains to be seen.

Internet Gambling Bill Amended The River City Group has learned that a bill to repeal a measure prohibiting many forms of Internet gambling in the United States was in the process of being amended. The bill - that HR 5767 - is co-sponsored by both Democrat Barney Frank and Republican Ron Paul.
In its current form, the bill, introduced in April, would prohibit the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve from "proposing, prescribing or implementing" any regulations under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

"If enacted, the bill would strip the UIGEA of any practical effect," a source in Washington, D.C told River City and its iGaming News division., who is closely acquainted with the legislation told IGN in April.

Barney Frank has had his hands full in recent weeks dealing with the mortgage crisis - capped off by news of "sweat heart" deals made to at least two Democrats from the head of Countrywide Home Mortgages while Ron Paul officially ended his Presidential bid last week.
The news of the amendment also comes as Antigua has announced deadline of Friday to resolve their dispute over Internet gambling with the United States. The US lost a landmark case with the World Trade Organization last year but has not yet fully abided by the decision handed down.

The glory days were when I was able to walk into one of the many local bookie joints in the Mahoning Valley and place a bet. Ahhh, there was nothing like it. At one time, there seemed to be a bookie on every corner.

As for the "good old days" of internet gambling, I personally enjoy / am much more comfortable with gambling online today than I ever was. With the exception of the loss of neteller, things are better today. Things are much more stable, as a lot of the fly-by-nights have been weeded out. After 10 years or so, we kind of know which books are reliable / here to stay, and which are not. As far as sending and receiving funds......the los of neteller took away a great convenience, however there are other options out there that are pretty close when it comes to neteller's ease and speediness.

All in all, I'm pretty content with how things now stand.

Congress set to vote next week on Internet gambling ban
The House Committee on Financial Services will vote next Tuesday on HR 5767, a bill that would prohibit enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, which seeks to ban Internet gambling.

We need your help in rallying behind this legislation. If this bill passes, it could pave the way towards Congress legalizing Internet gambling.

Please tell your member of Congress to vote “Yes” on HR 5767. You can send an email your representative at Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative. To find your representative, click here.

Thanks.

The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative promotes the freedom of individuals to gamble online with the proper safeguards to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of financial transactions.
Additionally, the Initiative is a resource for information about legislation to regulate Internet Gambling and provides individuals, organizations and companies the opportunity to support the legislation and engage their elected officials.
"I want to get it undone. If an adult in this country, with his or her own money, wants to engage in an activity that harms no one, how dare we prohibit it? Adults are entitled to do with their own money what they want."
- Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) on enactment of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
“The ban on Internet gambling is misdirected - and it's also probably unenforceable. People will still gamble on the Web, just without the protections that a legal framework could provide to ensure age-verification and protection against fraud.”
- Congressmen Steve Israel (D-NY) and Peter King (R-NY) from their New York Post editorial “Web Gambling: Tax Don’t Ban”
“Even under the most conservative estimates, licensing and regulating Internet gambling – and collecting the taxes that are due – will provide much-needed revenue to the U.S. Treasury. This is money we are currently losing to other jurisdictions, for no other reason than some of my colleagues think we can actually stop people from gambling online. It is money we will continue to lose if we ignore the fact that if grown adults in America want to gamble online, they can and they will.”
- Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) from testimony submitted to the House Committee on the Judiciary

Why Support Lawful Internet Gambling?
  • Existing laws prohibiting Internet gambling are a government intrusion into people’s private lives
  • Traditional forms of gambling exist in nearly every state
  • Estimated tax revenue generated through regulated Internet gambling ranges from $8.7 to $42.8 billion in federal revenues over its first ten years
  • Current efforts to prohibit Internet gambling are futile as Americans continue to gamble online and without consumer protections
  • Proven and effective safeguards can prevent underage and compulsive gamblers from betting online
  • Proven safety controls can protect against fraud, identity theft and money laundering
  • Regulated Internet gambling can bring the U.S. into compliance with recent decision by the World Trade Organization by allowing foreign, as well as domestic, Internet gambling operators to legally accept online bets

Why is this thread in this forum?????? I am still debating whether Kelly Ripa is a 8.2 or a 6.2 given the boob factor and now this irrelevant thread interupts. Offshore gambling.........does it have boobs? I give Ripa the benefit of the doubt and a 9.5, but Pinny is a definite 10....unless it continues to deny US facing business access in which case it is a 3.

This bill is important as it will stop the government from having the ability through banks to confiscate your money or refuse financial transactions due to suspicious activity, like sending or receiving money from off-shore sportsbooks.

It is getting a vote in a House committee for goodness sakes. Should it get approved it would still have to get scheduled for a vote. Do you think the Democratic leadership led by Pelosi are that interested in this? If it did pass the House it would happen in the midst of a campaign and one thing you can count on is politicians don't take chances during campaigns. So it would have to get voted in during the clean up session after November, get sent to the Senate during the same clean up session and then be signed by a lame duck President who isn't likely to approve of this either. If that all doesn't happen by January its back to the drawing board on this puppy as we will have a new House seated.

In other words don't be getting your hopes up too much.

I wanna see the tax implications of the bill.

thieves will want 10% from the books and
10% on YOUR winnings.
Biggest questions is how much vig does it add
