Is buying a lottery ticket a "bet"? Per Websters online dictionary a bet is defined as: "something that is laid, staked, or pledged typically between two parties on the outcome of a contest or a contingent issue" If you place a wager on a football game of $100 on Team A to win you know that if your team wins you will win $100 no matter how many others have wagered on Team A. But when you purchase a lottery ticket you have no idea as to what you would win if your numbers are chosen. If you buy a ticket for $1 and the total lottery pot is $100 million and 100 million people have the same numbers as you and it hits, you win $1 (paid as an annuity over 20 years )If 10 people have the same numbers as you, then you get $10 million, 5 people - $20 million. So, would buying a lottery ticket be considered a "bet"?

Its a bet. when I was 18 I went to G A for 3 months. I told them I played a lotto ticket. They took away the 3 months. I was back at zero. Thats when I walked out and said I will never be back. It is a bet.

interesting betting story, in New Jersey the police raided all bowling alleys a dew months ago, they fined any alley who allowed people to play card games, strike pots, 50/50's it was pretty ridiculous, they allowed high game pots, saying it wasnt gambling but a game of skill.. from what i hear it was pretty hefty fines too...
