| Nice move by SI to join the fight to protect our future generations Magazines go green with global warming issues Fri Mar 9, 2007 4:43 PM EST By Mary Milliken LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Some sports fans may now know as much about global warming as they know about women's swimwear: Sports Illustrated this week tells readers how a warming world is going to change the state of play. The American male's favorite read for its sports coverage and annual swimsuit issue is just one of many U.S. magazines coming out with global warming on their covers as awareness and concern over a climate crisis grow in the United States. ELLE, Outside Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly will also feature global warming and the environment in coming weeks. The current greening of the newsstand comes just weeks after global warming swept through the mainstream movie industry. "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary featuring former Vice President Al Gore lecturing on climate change, won two Oscars at the first Academy Awards ceremony designed to be "carbon-neutral." "Clearly the editors of these magazines feel that the time has come," said Peter Kreisky of Kreisky Media Consultancy. "With Al Gore, his Oscar, and a higher level of awareness, this is becoming important." The SI cover warns "As the Planet Changes, So Do the Games We Play: Time to Pay Attention" and shows baseball pitcher Dontrelle Willis standing in a stadium full of water in Florida. As oceans get warmer and ice caps melt, the seas will rise and coastal areas like South Florida will "eventually be underwater," the magazine says. Baseball could see faster balls and less timber for bats, golf courses will have to live on less water and pesticides and ski competitions will have to move to higher slopes for snow. "Fighting global warming ... can be an integral part of building more profitable professional teams and keeping sports alive for generations," said Eben Burnham-Snyder of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which lauded the cover issue. "Outside," dedicated to adventure sports and lifestyle, features not a mountain climber but a politician on its April cover: Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor turned California governor who has championed a pioneering global warming law. Schwarzenegger, who popularized the gas-guzzling Hummer, tells readers how he got General Motors to make a hydrogen-fueled version and switched one of his diesel ones to biofuel that emits French fry-scented exhaust. Fashion magazine ELLE has invited Hollywood environmental activist and "Inconvenient Truth" producer Laurie David to be guest editor again for its second annual green issue in May. "Green living is bigger than ever and influences every areas of our lives, from fashion to beauty, health,. entertaining, politics, lifestyle and more," ELLE said in an invitation to a party for its issue next month. The Atlantic Monthly cover story for April is "Global Warming: Who Loses -- and Who Wins" which it calls "a guide to how we all might get along in a warming world." |

| Man O man....Wrigs you got that right....91 series was prolly the best ever.... But I am good Friends with Jody Davis, so let me konw when your are coming and it is set up........ Me and Jody Coached together before he got hired to coach Peoria...he has been Promoted to Daytona man CHICAGO -- Buddy Bailey, a former catcher and Minor League manager with the Boston Red Sox, will manage the Chicago Cubs' Triple-A Iowa team in 2007, and former Cubs catcher Jody Davis will switch from Class A Peoria to Daytona. Bailey is one of three new Minor League managers for the Cubs. Tom Beyers will make his managerial debut with Boise and Ricardo Medina will make his debut as skipper for the Mesa Rookie League team. Davis, who played for the Cubs from 1981-88, led Peoria to the first-half Western Division championship in 2006 with a 41-28 record. Peoria finished 75-64 overall in Davis' managerial debut. Davis will be joined at Class A Daytona by Rich Bombard, who will handle pitching coach duties after holding the same position with Peoria last season. Major League veteran Richie Zisk will return as the club's hitting coach for the second straight season, while Steve Melendez enters his 22nd year in the Cubs organization as Daytona's athletic trainer. Bailey was the Cubs catching and baserunning coordinator in 2006. Before joining the Cubs, he worked in Boston's organization from 1991-2004 and Atlanta's from 1982-1990. He previously managed at the Triple-A level with Pawtucket (1992-1996, 2002-2004) and served as Boston's big league bench coach in 2000. The Iowa staff will include former Cubs pitcher Mike Harkey as pitching coach and Von Joshua as hitting coach, the same post he held in 2006. Bob Grimes will be the athletic trainer for the fourth straight season. Pat Listach will manage at the Double-A level for the second straight season, leading the Tennessee Smokies. This season at West Tenn, Listach's team finished 75-65. The 1992 American League Rookie of the Year was Triple-A Iowa's hitting coach from 2001-2005. Listach spent six seasons in the Majors with Milwaukee (1992-1996) and Houston (1997). The Tennessee staff includes pitching coach Dennis Lewallyn, who spent the previous 12 seasons in Arizona's Minor League operations. Barbaro Garbey is the club's hitting coach after handling the same responsibility with Peoria in 2006, while Matt Johnson returns as the team's athletic trainer. The managerial position at Peoria is undecided. David Rosario will handle pitching coach duties after guiding Class A Boise's pitching staff last season, while Kevin Green will be the team's hitting coach, a similar duty he had with Rookie League Mesa last season. Nick Frangella enters his third season in the Cubs organization as Peoria's athletic trainer. Beyers was the hitting coach for West Tenn last season. A former outfielder, Beyers spent the 2004 season as Boise's manager and was named the Northwest League Manager of the Year after leading the Hawks to the league title. Assisting Beyers will be the team's pitching coach Tom Pratt, a member of the organization since 1999. Franklin Font, who played in the Cubs Minor League system from 1996-1999, will handle hitting coach duties. At Rookie League Mesa, Medina will make his debut after spending the past eight seasons as a hitting coach in various levels of the Cubs organization. In 2006, as Class A Boise's hitting coach, he helped the Hawks lead the Northwest League in team batting with a .268 average. Joining Medina will be Rick Tronerud, who will enter his seventh consecutive season as the club's pitching coach. Former Major Leaguer Carmelo Martinez will be the club's hitting coach after serving as Mesa's manager last season. The team has not named athletic trainers for either the Boise or Mesa teams. Carrie Muskat is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. |
