Did he really get that much?

What a brutal deal for the Tigers, going to cripple them as a franchise. Already had to trade Fister, wont be able to sign Scherzer. In two-three years when miggy starts breaking down this is going to look awful just like the Pujols and A Rod deals

Only guy id give this type of contract to is Trout since he is already worth that type of money and actually will be for another ten years. Giving this to a guy over 30 is brutal and is just paying him for previous accomplishments

Hell id give this deal to Harper before Miggy. Spend money on guys with their primes in front of them, not behind them

When you lose a playoff series because of lack of offensive production then no member of your team should be eligible to sign for that amount.

    Damn

They had him under contract for two more years. This extension makes no sense.

Where does Detroit get this money ? There is no way they can be operating in the black in that market. Must have a passionate owner willing to go deep into his own pockets.

They do. Mike Ilitch, of Little Caesar's fortune.

He kept car ads up in the stadium even though they couldn't afford to pay for them anymore.

seems pretty crazy to handicap your team vs the salary cap in the later years of this contract

These 10 year deals never work out well for the club. His stats are awesome, but I'd not want to go over 5 years/ 150MM. He is kind of a big guy that likely wont age well past 35. Possible primary DH in a few years, lot of money for a guy not too great with a glove.

Tough call HT: He certainly is deserving of a big payday like everybody else, but I doubt the second half of that contract looks good in a few ( 3-5) years from now ? Not too many guys are elite after 35 and he seems to 30.

Can't blame the players for signing these contracts. If I were the player I'd not seek every last dollar for an ego trip, I'd rather play where I wanted to live, Like say SD instead of Detroit.Play my best and if the team sucks it ain't my fault if I produce. I really would put the ring thing down the list, as long as I gave everything I had on the field trying and secured the financial stuff well enough first. I doubt many players care about being champions .

I thought Yankees had a good sign in Texiera

he wasnt too old, plays gold glove defense and seemed a natural fit to the short RF fence. but he has stopped hitting much

many horrid contracts teams would like to be rid of Carl Crawford, Pujols, Josh Hamilton just three off top of head. this one seems destined for that territory

funny thing about pujols and hamilton is how bad they went fast

seems like once these guys are set to be very very very rich around 30-33 yrs old many of them dont much care anymore about the game

They will regret this contract. The question is when they start regretting it. In 3 years or in 5 years?

What long term big money deal given to a player over 30 has ever worked out?

This guy hasn't even reached his peak.......

He is a young 30 and will be one of the best hitters for at least the next 5 years and maybe a lot longer as he could play the DH after 5 years.

Who in the world else are they going to sign that is as good as him? There is no one and he deserves every penny.

The owner obviously loves him and thinks he is worth it..... And so do I ... There's nobody close to his worth in baseball........

    Good for him...........

This deal does seems a bit odd, but with all these long-term, big-money copntracts being thrown around lately, the baseball execs must see something on the horizon (new collective bargaining agreement?) that makes them think salaries will soon explode even higher than they are in the present-tense.

Regarding Cabrera, he's in his prime at the current moment (the last 2 years, anyway), and if his health holds up then he'll be among the top hitters in baseball for probably several more years. He has plenty of room for regression before he eventually drops out of the upper-echelon.

I wouldn't sign him to this kind of deal (especially when he's still under contract for the next couple of years), but it's probably a good bit safer than the Pujols and Josh Hamilton deals of recent years.

How is a guy whose been up since 20, and a guy who is overweight as well as once having a drinking problem, a young 30?

Trout is worth more money than Cabrera as well. So saying no one is close is crazy.

Baseball has great local market ratings. Everyone is signing 1-3 billion dollar tv contracts. That's where all this money is coming from.

Mike Trout is obviously close to him in terms of value, and many would argue he's more valuable. Trout also much younger, and has many more peak years left.

Trout more deserving of a contract this large and you are saying no one is close to as deserving. Puzzling stuff.

This contract is very foolish. It's even worse than the others because they had him under contract for two more years anyway.

salaries cant go higher or fans wont be able to attend games. The Yanks had a lot of empty seats last year for every game. Regular people get poorer every year, you can't spend several hundred dollars to take your family to the ballgame unless you make big money these days.

I wouldn't count on Miggy getting healthier over the course of this deal. It's more likely the nagging injuries continue as he approaches his mid to late 30s.

There was no rush to get a deal done - Tigers had him signed thru next season. Now they're stuck with a player in decline and the extension hasn't even kicked in yet.
