Default Golf: Zach Johnson’s Triumph at Open Championship

Fife, Scotland. The 29th Open Championship tournament to be held at Old Course (St. Andrews) marked the 2015 - 144th Open. In a stellar display of sportsmanship Zach Johnson claimed the victory in a three-man 4-hole Playoff, which*included South African Louis Oosthuizen and Australia's Marc Leishman. In the presence of a larger than average crowd, Johnson was handed the Claret Jug;*the sun burned through the clouds and rain drops started to slowly scatter away the happy spectators, making for a picture-perfect ending to an outstanding tournament.

Old Course at St Andrews is surely a historic site. With the birth of golf -taking place here in the 1400's-*this course has been with golf from the very beginning. While a public/open field nowadays, the grounds are filled with an almost palpable historic air. The iconic Swilcan Bridge to the 18th hole, embodying 700 years-worth of golfing tradition, has stood majestically through every single competitor’s last hole, repeating the feat in Golfing History as Johnson made his way across. This years-old Open saw a new crop of spectators as well, adding another dimension to this highly evolved sport. In a move that had the organizers scrambling to adjust, this year the extra day of the tournament had a cost of only 10 GBP and thus several children were in attendance, as well as many more people quite interested in seeing the sport in person.

    Welcome to Scotland!

With world number one and defending champion Rory McIlroy's Withdrawal from the tournament prior to its commencement, due to an off-course ankle injury. The Open was up for the taking. This was the first time since 1954 that the Open was played without a Defending Champion.

The home of golf, as Old Course is so kindly referred to, took on a new meaning for 39-year-old Zach Johnson as he won the 2015 Open. Johnson was in tears during his interview off the green, when said he was humbled and honored to be the Open Champion. He also said he was honored to have his name etched onto the trophy, claiming the feeling was –rightly- surreal. Johnson, with 12 victories on the PGA Tour and 2 Majors on his belt, is well on his way to the top. Beating Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen, and Rory Sabbatini and winning the Masters in 2007 and now the Open Johnson is joining the elite rung of World Class Golfers.

Early on all eyes fell on 21-year-old Jordan Spieth, currently ranked second in the world listing and biting at the heels of a calendar Grand Slam. After winning his first major at the 2015 Masters Tournament and then moving on to win the 2015 U.S. Open, watchful fans, friends and family were –all- hoping for a Third Consecutive Major Win to catapult Spieth above and beyond the top ranking. Unfortunately, as is so common in professional golf, Spieth's dreams of a Grand Slam quickly fell out of reach, at least for 2015. He fought the good fight to the end, with back-to-back birdies after taking four putts for a double-bogey on No. 8. Two holes away from the finish he rolled in a spectacular 50-foot birdie putt and hopes were high, however, after missing an 8-foot par putt on No. 17, he needed a birdie on the closing hole to join the playoff. He missed his birdie, but, in true sportsman manner, he was overheard while addressing his caddie Michael Greller: "We gave it a great effort." as they most certainly did.

Zach, born in Iowa City, attended high school at Cedar Rapids Regis Iowa, and helped lead Regis to a state title.

He played his collegiate golf at Drake, in Des Moines, IA, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to two MVC golf titles.

Ironically, Zach was not even the number one golfer on any of the teams above when they won their respective titles.
