    Default Phil Steele Football Magazine

It seems like everyone raves about Phil Steele's football magazine. I find this to be the most overrated magazine on the market.

The writing is second-rate, formulaic and hard to read unless you have a magnifying glass.

    Legitimate criticisms.

But for $14 or thereabouts, plenty of good reference material all in one spot.

You make a good point, Arnold, about Phil's formulaic format.

Much of the content is dated and merely a recap of past seasons.

Important note for gamblers: Phil's deadline for content was June 1 and a lot of the best information in college football is produced in the summer and early fall.

Any opinion of the Warren Sharp NFL Preview? I always see it on Amazon with good reviews.

Another problem with the phil steele magazine.... when looking at last years games and previous 5 years he does not post the date of the games played. It would be easier to check past boxscores or back to back games . Marc Lawrence only gives last years dates not the previous 5.

Agree the writing is repetitive and formatted to update easily. He also uses the word simply too much.

i do buy it every year and carry it with me in my briefcase so it's convenient.

Heard good things about Warren Sharp, but have not seen his publication.

I prefer Marc Lawrence's Playbook tp Steele's magazine because it's cleaner and easier to reference.

Pretty good effort by Phil Steele each year but boy does he love to pat himself on the back over and over again. You would think he pegged every teams record right on the button. Remember he's in the business of selling magazines so he won't say a team that was 1-11 will probably go 1-11 again. It's all about spinning the positive. For instance if if a team was 1-11 last year he'll highlight the incoming JC guys that could make an impact or how a new offensive coordinator is highly regarded. I also notice that on some teams projected starters and starters returning are way off. On one team he had four projected starters wrong. He also misses a lot of players that he projects will start for next year who might have injured their ACL during the spring and will miss the 2017 season. The bottom line is use it as a starting point or point of reference.

I ordered it too because Phil Steele no longer prints an NFL preview magazine.

Why would somebody buy a magazine that Mr. Linemaker swears by? Dig deeper.

I hear his picks not very good. but hes appeared on espn....and radio shows all over...i guess some good and some bad

I'm not a fantasy player, but Sharp's book is solid from what I've read since Monday morning.

I'm reading Warren Sharp's NFL preview right now. Although he has tons of tables of his own metrics, he does about a 1500 word (I'm guessing) write-up on each team that interprets the data suggesting team's strong and weak units, especially in the light of difficulty of schedule for each unit. In other words, against the fifth toughest schedule of defensive pass rushers Denver's offensive line achieved these results which, with the signing of so and so, suggests this about the unit. He's very opionated about GM's and coaches based on his own metrics, as opposed to Phil Steele who seems to look for teams coming off a disappointing year with a lot coming back.

I'm pretty impressed, and feel like I'm coming away a good set of keys that are going to help me interpret the first few weeks of the season.
