I wonder if Boston knows? They were pretty tight late 80s & 90s before Dave went tout.

If he was doing 15 miles with elevation gain, he was a serious day hiker.

I know the trail, the North Loop. It's hardcore, too much for me, really, as a day hike anyway, with some steep grades and sharp bluffs. This really makes me doubt he's okay, but hopefully I'm wrong. Scary stuff.

    https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/n...ak-north-trail

    One hiker said:

This is a great trail. The closer to the peak, the more treacherous it gets with some very serious (certainly fatal) drops.

Hate to say it - but agree

Listening to him on the Sunday Stardust Line on KDWN when he. Cokin and other analyzed the CFB sked was MUST LISTEN at that time. He probably pushed me to more winners than I could count. He always loved making snarky comments that were cold, cut deep and were accurate. I never knew the Mason Dizon line separated WV/PA until he told me. One day I am watching "Millionaire" and the question asked what states are on different sides of the Mason Dixon line and I knew the answer because of Dave. I am hoping for the best for him but like JK said - if the worst comes about it won't shock me.

You could not criticize Joe Paterno around Dave Malinsky.

He also loved Jerry Sandusky's defensive schemes before everyone found out about Sandusky's offensive schemes.

he benefitted from an excellent rescue team in colorado, from reading up it seems like its more of a less talented makeshift metro team that vegas uses.

I am very troubled to read the entire story. Its very relatable obviously.
Dink contacted me earlier to tell me of this. It hadn't sunk in until around a hour ago. Very, very scary and sad. There is no worst feeling one will experience in life than being lost in the mountains. Being forced to question your morality suddenly and also with great length simultaneously is a awful experience. The worst I will ever encounter I am sure.

He is in my thoughts and wishes. He's also a extremely fortunate individual that so many know about him and care so deeply. That oftentimes is not the case.

I work as a volunteer with alpine rescue/trail restoration of Colorado and I do not have any easy answers for people wondering about 72 hours in the elements and how he or anyone would fare. I have spent the last 3 spring and summers trying to give back and make a difference I think its safe to say that he needs assistance in the worst way. Ive heard of worst cases with happy-ish endings though. Hope is not lost. Don't ever give up on a hiker.

Matt was wrong in that I was not rescued by a high tech rescue team. Unfortunately there is no such thing. 99% of rescue workers are volunteers. Highly trained yes but the training from state to state doesn't change. The gear may but that is about it unfortunately.

My advice is if you're in the area and you have had time to think about this man and are concerned go volunteer. There will never be any rescue team or search party that will turn away someone looking to help. Help can come in many forms in this circumstance. Regardless of outcome it is not something you'll regret.

    Take care (of each other)
    Eddie

Thoughts and prayers for Dave. Hopefully he’s holed up safe for whatever reason rationing his water and food. This can still end well.

According to those close to Dave, he was only supposed to be gone for the day but he never returned. He was last seen by a group of hikers around 3:15 p.m. near the north loop trail-head, half way between Lee Canyon and Kyle Canyon Roads.

Not a hiker, does "trail-head" refer to start of a trail, fork between trails?

Refers to the beginning of the trail.

That seems like an odd last place to be seen. That sort of implies that he was almost done with the hike and the toughest part was almost certainly behind him at that point.

Dave was liked by all who knew him well.

But did he ever feud with anyone?

At this point, I think authorities should consider foul play.

Yes the trailhead is the start of the trail. I’ve done the North Loop trail up to Raintree countless times, and it’s one of my favorites in the area.

It really doesn’t get that challenging until after Raintree if you go for Charleston peak. Last I checked, there is still snow and ice on the trail, so that could make for some tricky navigating.

The good news is people saw him close to the trailhead towards the end of the hike.

I don’t know Dave, but truly hope he is ok.

Yes normally referred to as the beginning, where you park your car or get dropped off by a shuttle.

If he was supposed to be back at 4pm and he was last seen at 315 at the trailhead, makes ya think something happened at the parking lot, especially if that's where his car was found.

I read that and started thinking same, seems like something happened in parking area.

How many cars are normally parked in that area? To me seems like foul play is much more likely than accident/stranded on mountain from that statement.

I don't Dave like Alf or Arne know him, but is there any chance he would disappear on purpose?

Trying to think about all the possibilities.

Guess anything is possible, I thought I read or heard that Dave's Mom was actually in town visiting before this happened.

not for us at Not at this time, certainly.

He has family and friends reading and updating threads on various forums.

they are already going through mental anguish and torture. No need to add any gossip/speculation from hrs away on the internet, unless its something along the lines of Hopefully He found some shelter and hurt a leg and couldn't walk anymore.

If he was only going to be gone for the day that means he probably didn't bring a lot of stuff with him - as far as water and clothing. I am hoping for the best, but.............??????

The question is which way was he walking on the trail when the other hikers saw him? Was he walking back to the parking lot or the other way, that will tell you everything. No one backtracks while they're hiking.

Are there mountain lions or other predators out there? It is the West, so can't be shocked if the big cats were out there.

I would guess that Dave was aware of the ten essentials.

    https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-adv...ssentials.html

For those considering taking up hiking, here is a minimal list of items to take on a hike into the backcountry:

    Navigation (map and compass)
    Sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen)
    Insulation (extra clothing)
    Illumination (headlamp/flashlight)
    First-aid supplies
    Fire (waterproof matches/lighter/candles)
    Repair kit and tools
    Nutrition (extra food)
    Hydration (extra water)
    Emergency shelter

Even the brilliant, intelligent human beings do stupid things. In the end, we are all just human which is why you can never condemn anybody for anything for life. We are complicated creatures but one has to wonder why he thought it was a good idea at his age to go hiking on his own let alone nobody in his entire circle went with him.

This brought back memories of a Chicago area sportswriter named Keith Reinhardt, who disappeared in the mountains in Colorado and was never found. That even made a documentary about him.
