Default The EOG 500 (Free shot to win $500)

Horse racing will be in the spotlight this weekend when Churchill Downs presents the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Last year, a record $207.5 million was bet on the Derby Day card with the Derby itself handling $137.8 million, counting all exotics closing out in the Derby.

Always Dreaming won last year's Kentucky Derby at odds of 9/2, extending the streak of winning race favorites to five years.

    This is a 15-race contest for $500.

Five races on Derby Day, five races on Preakness Day and five races on Belmont Stakes Day.

Here's our Triple Crown contest format
: Each contestant will submit a selection in each of the four races (races 8-11) leading up to the Kentucky Derby. The fifth and final leg of the contest will be the Kentucky Derby (Post time at 6:50 p.m. ET). Alternate selections will be accepted if the contestant fears a scratched horse and in the case there is no alternate selection submitted, the contestant will default to the race favorite. A mythical $2 win, $2 place and $2 show wager will be assigned to each selection and the contestant with the largest bankroll at the end of the five-race series will be declared the winner of the first leg of the contest. We will repeat the process for the Preakness card and Belmont Stakes card over the next five weeks.

In sum: This is a 15-race contest for $500.

Five races on Derby Day, five races on Preakness Day and five races on Belmont Stakes Day.

Field size: 50 EOG contributors (First come, first serve)

    Prize money
: $500 will be awarded to the contestant who posts the largest composite bankroll after all three Triple Crown races are complete (The Preakness takes place May 19 and the Belmont Stakes will be contested June 9.)

    Bonus money
: $5,000 will be awarded to the ace handicapper who wins all three individual legs, sweeping the Triple Crown.

Contestants will submit their selections in this thread.

Contest window opens Tuesday at noon ET and closes when the horses break from the gate in the first contest race.

Do this is two separate contests!? 5 races Derby Day & Triple Crown races? First paragraph says winner awarded after 5 races complete then we're into TC races ending with Belmont.

Trying to clean up the verbiage now.

Just one contest with two payoff structures, Heim.

For Derby day? I can't imagine someone betting and not having past performances. So many big fields of good horses. I just printed out pps for Oaks day. Another great card.

    JK;
No chance at tweaking the payouts a bit,so there's an award for top finish each of the 3 TC days?
Maybe reduce the bonus to 2 K,and add a $200. prize for Derby and Preakness day 1st place, and a larger reward for top contest player overall.
Raw odds of hitting the bonus could be as high as 20,000/1,better chance of anyone having a good day than 3 of them.

We will go with this payoff structure this year and adopt your idea next year.

It's worded a little ambiguous, probably the only rule that needs to be clarified is whether losses count against your bankroll.

    Not sure what that means.

Just to be clear what I mean, if you whiff in every race in the 1st 2 legs, are you going into the 3rd leg at 0.00 or -$60.00?

$0.00 is standard I believe and much easier to grade.

If it's a "composite bankroll" than the amounts from each of the 3 TC days needs to be cumulative, otherwise someone who's way back can shoot for some 200/1 shot to win a race since there's no cap on WPS prices. That way minus results have to be avoided too.

    No caps John?

    RE: NHC RULES.
There is a cap placed on all mutuel payoffs. The Win cap is 20/1 ($42.00). The Place cap is 10/1 ($22.00)

Is it the optimal structure that a Hail Mary bomb could win it all?

I would gladly get in this, and I would like to reserve spots for RDalert, and 2w2p2s, even though he probably will not do it. This site needs more quality over quantity. Just because you respond to petty crap, doesn’t make you a sports gambler. Just means you don’t have a life. I’ll save you the trouble billysink, I only bench 250, but that hasn’t mattered since I turned 18.
