I don't believe this tells the whole story. You make a lot of good points but you also leave out a lot too. To add to that side of the story you can even include the fact they took on Dontrelle Willis's horrible contract just to pick Miggy up originally. Some of the things you're leaving out is the butts in the seats that Miggy just being on the team produced. the AL East titles he led them to including the year they signed him to this extension as well as many times a guy gets a sweet contract based on what he's done in the past as well. Detroit was still in the thick of being on top of the east. Yes in hindsight it was a bad contract but most teams would have done the exact same thing and have over the years when they have a big Slugger in their lineup like that and a major draw at the gate. They also just unloaded Prince Fielder's big contract to sign and keep him. You don't not sign the best or second best player in the league when your still winning division titles and considered one of the best teams in the league. We've all seen this situation many times before. When all you're doing is looking at the stats on the internet you reach conclusions like this but there was way more to this situation that what you laid out here . Worst contract in the history of the league? I don't think that's even close.

Basically it was the Tigers version of the Seabrook contract with the Blackhawks. Those contracts just hamstring your team for years. I like Miggy but he’s had injury issues.

in foresight and hindsight it was an awful contract

Detroit could've had the little production he had left without extending him. Again, he was under contract. The extension got them years of futility and injuries.

Re: Miguel Cabrera 10-year deal with the Tigers worth $300M

The extension kicked in for 2016. He was signed for 2014 and 2015 already so there was no reason to give him the deal rather than waiting and seeing if the years of being out of shape (not to mention the alcohol) would cause an early decline.

Out of the 8 years they gave him on the extension, 2016 was his only productive season. Even then, considering he can't play defense or run, it's debatable whether that season was worthy of $30 million.

The team will be hamstrung for the duration of the deal and it's showing on the field.

2016 they were ok but missed the playoffs even with that bloated payroll so that's a failure.

2017 they were the worst team in baseball.

2018 they're probably going to finish with 70-75 wins, so 3rd or 4th place in what's turning into the worst division in baseball.

              Expect something similar in 2019.

Very true the high brass / ownership also look at the fannies in the seats / TV . Horrible & good teams do take on players for that reason. Last contract of Jeter's was longer than the GM wanted cause ownership knows Jeter made people come to the game. Good points bushay .

This is the Tigers attendance since they moved to Comerica Park. 1st column is single game average. Then actual attendance followed by AL league average. Miggy came here the middle of 2007. As anyone can see the numbers skyrocketed. Even doubling a few earlier years thanks to Miggy and the team getting better. He rejuvenated the entire city. This is a baseball town first and foremost. Not many Tiger fans feel he was overpaid one penny and feel he was in fact underpaid. Its just too bad Dombrowski didn't manage his bullpen roster as well as the offensive team he put together.

Judging by advanced metrics, teams are not paying for past performance near as much anymore. The move they are kicking themselves over was letting Scherzer walk.

other moronic deals were given to guys who were actually free agents.

In this case, the Tigers had a player at the beginning of his decline with TWO YEARS LEFT ON THE DEAL. They chose to give him a monster contract for years when he probably will miss a lot of games, and even when he plays, won't be at his peak.
As a 40 year Tigers fan, I regrettably will say this was a sharp prediction.
