He has been playing injured for the better part of this season and the last 2 months last season.

I wouldn't count on Miggy getting healthier over the course of this deal. It's more likely the nagging injuries continue as he approaches his mid to late 30s.

There was no rush to get a deal done - Tigers had him signed thru next season. Now they're stuck with a player in decline and the extension hasn't even kicked in yet.

like I said, maybe the worst contract in MLB history

other moronic deals were given to guys who were actually free agents.

In this case, the Tigers had a player at the beginning of his decline with TWO YEARS LEFT ON THE DEAL. They chose to give him a monster contract for years when he probably will miss a lot of games, and even when he plays, won't be at his peak.

What made it even worse was they also gave Victor Martinez a long contract.

The Tigers had two guys who couldn't play defense or run, and in fact every time they jogged, they were at risk of pulling a muscle, and they decided they needed to sign both to big contracts to keep them until they were 40.

The absolute height of stupidity. I can't understand how they thought this was going to work out well.

Victor Martinez is making $18 million this season. Miguel Cabrera is making $30 million.

He is a young 30 and will be one of the best hitters for at least the next 5 years and maybe a lot longer as he could play the DH after 5 years.

Who in the world else are they going to sign that is as good as him? There is no one and he deserves every penny.

The owner obviously loves him and thinks he is worth it..... And so do I ... There's nobody close to his worth in baseball........

                  Good for him...........

Re: Miguel Cabrera 10-year deal with the Tigers worth $300M

Since 2014, he played 119 games in 2015, 158 in 2016, and 130 in 2017. This year, he has been in 38 games...and he's done.

Now he can deal with the kids he had with a mistress who is suing him for $100,000 per month child support, and she is claiming he pays more attention to his 3 kids with his wife than he does with his 2 kids with the mistress.

I don't believe this tells the whole story. You make a lot of good points but you also leave out a lot too. To add to that side of the story you can even include the fact they took on Dontrelle Willis's horrible contract just to pick Miggy up originally. Some of the things you're leaving out is the butts in the seats that Miggy just being on the team produced. the AL East titles he led them to including the year they signed him to this extension as well as many times a guy gets a sweet contract based on what he's done in the past as well. Detroit was still in the thick of being on top of the east. Yes in hindsight it was a bad contract but most teams would have done the exact same thing and have over the years when they have a big Slugger in their lineup like that and a major draw at the gate. They also just unloaded Prince Fielder's big contract to sign and keep him. You don't not sign the best or second best player in the league when your still winning division titles and considered one of the best teams in the league. We've all seen this situation many times before. When all you're doing is looking at the stats on the internet you reach conclusions like this but there was way more to this situation that what you laid out here . Worst contract in the history of the league? I don't think that's even close.

with the marlins, he would not even show up at the park for games. just a knucklehead who had the talent for a better career...

Basically it was the Tigers version of the Seabrook contract with the Blackhawks. Those contracts just hamstring your team for years. I like Miggy but he’s had injury issues.

in foresight and hindsight it was an awful contract

Detroit could've had the little production he had left without extending him. Again, he was under contract. The extension got them years of futility and injuries.
