Why wait so long? Pot biz doing well?

      Re: news out of California

No, the pot biz is not nearly up to forecasted revenues, taxed too much, so the local dealers still are players. Indians want the sport money, voting is just a ponzi scheme of the left here in CA.

Legalized national sports betting helps promote Las Vegas and Las Vegas-style sports betting.

Legalized sports betting in California will take a bite out of Las Vegas's pie.

Nice but 2020 is too effen long. They should do it on THIS year's 2018 ballot.

Thank God no more trips to Vegas to have to bet sports legally once this passes.

            Agree, why wait until 2020?

It will be naïve to think that Vegas won't take a hit if Arizona and California legalize it.

There isn't enough time to get on the 2018 ballot.

The initiative process has just started, California requires completion of the process 131 days before an election date to get on a particular ballot. Currently only 147 days are left till the Nov 6, 2018 general election so considering the signature gathering and verification time frames, 2018 is out.

Slots rule in CA. If the hold percentages were comprable they would have had it on by the end of June deadline. Even the greedy Indians have said that sports betting is more of a hassle than a pot of gold. They know the numbers.

The greedy Indians are missing the big picture.

If others offer sports betting and you don't, it's a competitive disadvantage.

That's why every hotel/casino in Las Vegas offers sports betting.

Let's assume Vegas was also a slots and table game venue only like the reservations. Would they rush to get books onto their floors with this new ruling? Aren't the books in Vegas a vehicle to keep the whales on their property? Just a courtesy so they don't elsewhere. Ballys stop booking baseball a few years back and their bottom-line barely flinched.

The Stardust made bookmaking vogue but the celebs that went their to bet sports dropped tons at the tables too. We know that 4.5% is easier to beat than most games around but so do the books. Westgate is the only hotel I know that moved slots to expand a book. So I think we're kidding ourselves believing anyone besides New Jersey is doing cartwheels re this recent ruling....

                          Re: News out of California

The Stardust was smart in promoting its property through the sports book.

The Westgate, under Jay Kornegay's direction, followed suit.

                          Heim knows the history.

Sports betting is an appetizer or maybe a dessert but it will never be the main course (tables and slots).

Corporate meetings at the big-name resorts rarely deal with the sports book except for Super Bowl week, March Madness or a mega-fight.

I always thought the Indians could have offered sports betting without government approval.

I'd like to know what special interest groups keep opposing sports betting now pushing it to a vote. The assembly will pass the stupidest revenue generating laws, for example, new law restricting resident (interior) water use to 55 gallons per day. First offense 1k fine. So you can't do laundry & take a shower the same day. But they don't want a steady revenue flow from gamblers.

Could be a state law to make it Indian only. Michigan has a similar agreement. I think only 2 casinos are not Indian-owned.

The assembly will pass the stupidest revenue generating laws, for example, new law restricting resident (interior) water use to 55 gallons per day. First offense 1k fine. So you can't do laundry & take a shower the same day. But they don't want a steady revenue flow from gamblers.

The card rooms can't bank. Why not just give people what they want? And why be so PC and give the Indians everything they ask for? I don't have complete trust in those Indian casinos. Imagine the scenario if you were cheated by them and went to tribal court. That would be a real fair trial (insert eye rolling emogie).

They steadfastly refused for awhile until the Pokagons took them to court to force it. You can imagine the hubbub when it came out that Boyd Gaming was far-and-away the biggest contributor.
