The New York State Racing and Wagering Board has adopted rules and regulations that will allow the state's racetracks and offtrack betting facilities to take wagering via the Internet beginning Jan. 22.

Currently, authorized entities can only offer telephone wagering accounts at OTB's and racetracks throughout the state. The new rules allow account wagers to be made in person, via any telephone device including cell phones, via the Internet, or through other electronic means.

"I think this is a breakthrough," said Bill Nader, the New York Racing Association's senior vice president and chief operating officer. "If you're trying to introduce Thoroughbred racing to a new audience, this is a step forward. Somebody under 35 would rather use their [personal computer] than the telephone. We think our site is going to be very attractive and very exciting."

Nader said NYRA is working aggressively to get everything in place to allow it to take Internet wagering by the launch date.

Ray Casey, president of New York City OTB, said he has been lobbying for Internet wagering for the past two years.

"To me," he said, "it's part of some of the tools that I thought were critical for not only OTB's future but horse racing in general: an ability to take advantage of technology and make horse racing more accessible for the X and Y generation."

Casey said he is hopeful that by the summer, all of the state's six OTB corporations could have a common website at which to wager. He said he has not ruled out becoming partners with an out-of-state provider if their technology is what he calls "best of breed."

Nothing like cleaning out the competition.

So if the NFL put horses on the sidelines, could we then bet legally?

What if each team had a horse and at the end of the game, they had a race with the winning teams horse always winning?

Hell an offshore could off the Bears horse vs the Saints horse and have them run around 7PM

I am so sick and tired of all the hypocricy!!!!!!

Let me see if I can understand this: Bingo, Lottery, Horse Racing, Internet OTB Horse Racing, Church Raffles and Bazaars, Slot parlors are popping up all over the country, Powerball, Mega Millions, Daily Number, not once a day but now twice a day, Pick 4, etc, etc etc - all gambling that is legal and encouraged in our country.

Sports Betting - not.

Why the hell doesn't the government just legalize and tax it. I know I'm not telling anyone things they don't know, I am so tired of all the bullshit regarding this.

I hear you. I see that some state lotteries offer Keno now. You can play all day, every 4 minutes. How is that not gambling?

You are missing the point...

There is GOOD gambling and BAD gambling.

This is all GOOD gambling.

Sending money out of the country to gamble is BAD gambling...

its not as much as the taxes, as it is the gambling interests that you mentioned (plus the card rooms and indian casinos) are donating tons of money to political campaigns and actually buying the politician's vote. you can see on the news how they're talking about how the politicians are building up their "war chests", how they need roughly 100 million to make a run at the presidency in '08. they could care less about taxes, its their personal campaign fund that they're worried about. and the current legal gambling interests are willing to pay big bucks to weed out the competition.
