Re: Poll-Will Las Vegas Have a Pro Sports Team Within the Next 5-7 Years?
It won't be long. I think 3-4 years is probably the right time frame, just enough to build a new arena. Baseball here would be the worst though, I can't see that happening. I think that one was negotiating leverage. Baseball depends on TV market and large population to fill seats 81 times. NBA and NHL do not. NHL makes the most sense, but the mayor and Steve Wynn love hoops.
These people who try to predict success on minor league teams are absolutely kidding themselves. The local hockey team has NEVER been on TV and has no radio coverage. If you want to follow them you have to either go see them live or listen to an online broadcast. They still average about 5,000 fans a game even though I would guess half the city has never heard of them. Not bad for a team 2 levels removed from the NHL.
The baseball team, the 51s play in a lousy part of town and also get no TV coverage, though they do get regular radio. I mean either of these teams could be playing for a league championship and most people here would have no idea because they won't be televised. So how do you compare that to a major league sports situation?
