The survey of more than 5,000 Iraqis found the majority optimistic despite their suffering in sectarian violence since the American-led invasion four years ago this week.
One in four Iraqis has had a family member murdered, says the poll by Opinion Research Business. In Baghdad, the capital, one in four has had a relative kidnapped and one in three said members of their family had fled abroad. But when asked whether they preferred life under Saddam, the dictator who was executed last December, or under Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, most replied that things were better for them today.
Only 27% think there is a civil war in Iraq, compared with 61% who do not, according to the survey carried out last month.

"War Propaganda" by Micah Ian Wright

Fake news is being used in the Iraq propaganda war, reports the Los Angeles Times. "[T]he U.S. military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the U.S. mission in Iraq. The articles, written by U.S. military 'information operations' troops, are translated into Arabic and placed in Baghdad newspapers. ... The stories trumpet the work of U.S. and Iraqi troops, denounce insurgents and tout U.S.-led efforts to rebuild the country. ... Records and interviews indicate that the U.S. has paid Iraqi newspapers to run dozens of such articles, with headlines such as 'Iraqis Insist on Living Despite Terrorism,' since the effort began this year. The operation is designed to mask any connection with the U.S. military. The Pentagon has a contract with ... Lincoln Group which helps translate and place the stories. The Lincoln Group's Iraqi staff, or its subcontractors, sometimes pose as freelance reporters or advertising executives when they deliver the stories to Baghdad media outlets."

Chlorine Blasts Kill 8; 6 Troops Also Die in Iraq

By Karin Brulliard
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 18, 2007; Page A20

BAGHDAD, March 17 -- Three trucks rigged with chlorine and explosives blew up in the Sunni insurgent center of Anbar province Friday, killing at least eight people and sickening hundreds, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Saturday. The U.S. military also reported the deaths of six American soldiers in other attacks.

The chlorine bombs -- two near Fallujah and one near Ramadi -- left at least 350 people and seven U.S. soldiers ill from exposure to the chemical, the military said. At least eight people were killed in the Fallujah bombings, including two policemen, said Sadoun Abdul Karim, an official with the Ministry of Interior.

Re: IRAQIS - LIFE IS GETTING BETTER: Most Iraqis believe life is better for them now

Sen. Hillary Clinton said that Iraqi women were better off under Saddam Hussein, arguing that when the brutal dictator ran the country women were at least assured the right to participate in Iraq's public life.

In comments that went unreported by the mainstream press, the former first lady told the Brookings Institution on Wednesday that since Saddam's removal from power, Iraq's post war governing councils had engaged in "pullbacks in the rights [women] were given under Saddam Hussein."

And for Iraqi women, those paper promises translated into real benefits, she claimed.
"They went to school; they participated in the professions, they participated in the government and business and, as long as they stayed out of [Saddam's] way, they had considerable freedom of movement," Clinton insisted.
But since Saddam's removal, the plight of Iraq's women has taken a significant turn for the worse, she contended.
"Now, what we see happening in Iraq is the governing council attempting to shift large parts of civl law into religious jurisdiction," Sen. Clinton explained, saying the loss of Saddam's guarantees amounted to a "horrific mistake" for women.
During her trip to Iraq last November, Clinton said Iraqi women told her personally how they felt less safe since the U.S. deposed Saddam.
"Women tell me they can't leave their homes, they can't go about their daily business. And there is a concerted effort to burn schools that are educating girls [and] to intimidate aid workers who are women," the leading Democrat complained. The former first lady called on President Bush to issue a statement that the U.S. "will not become the vehicle by which women's rights in Iraq are turned back."

Gosh ..... I was soooo wrong:

'Traumatized' Iraqis a growing concern

Sunday, March 18, 2007James PalmerNewhouse News Service

Baghdad- Iraqi psychiatrists are seeing what they call a disturbing spike in mental health disorders as terrorism, an armed insurrection and a bloody sectarian divide grip their country. The escalating psychiatric caseloads are compounded by Iraq's lack of mental health workers, facilities and services.

Several mental health-care professionals suggest the number of untreated or undertreated people nationwide reaches into the millions, and the consequences could permanently damage generations.

"Iraqis are being traumatized every day," said Said Al-Hashimi, 54, a psychiatrist who runs a private clinic and teaches at Mustansiriya Medical School in Baghdad. "No one knows what will result from living through this continuous trauma on a daily basis."

Though no reliable research exists on the state of Iraqis' mental health, the preliminary results of a survey of 10,000 primary school students in north Baghdad, conducted by the Iraqi Society of Psychiatrists and the World Health Organization, reveals startling and widespread problems.

The study, which has yet to be published, found at least 70 percent of students were suffering from trauma-related symptoms, according to Mohammed Al- Aboudi, Iraq's national mental health adviser. Aboudi said those numbers appeared so high that the survey was redone - only to find similar results.

We don't need a political forum, we need a GOOGLE forum for all of the cutting and pasting that goes on here.

Would all of the posters that have actually been to Iraq and can personally comment on the situation please post their personal experiences. Anyone else is merely acting like a parrot and that includes myself and Doc since we both admit we haven't gone over there.

Are you going to use that $100 you owe me to sign me up? I wouldn't send Rush a nickel of my own money but if YOU would like to pay for it go ahead.

Contrary to what the Left believe.....Disagreeing with someone is not attacking them... you have proven wrigs you only want a leftist point of view yesterday when you tried to claim we had 2 rightwing Mods... you don't want another Voice but one you can sux nuts.... You think Ken and Pete should ask POlitical preference before they are hired and if they are conservative they should tell them to fuck off... so nothing you say to me or anyone with a brain has any relevance, because you are a closed minded sheep that bitches about another point of view

Remember Im not a leftie I play it down the middle like you, FYI... Last Saturday I tested over 40 people trying to get a job with our company and political or religion preference was not asked I could care a less.

Quit lying or prove your not by posting where I said Shrink or General should ask political preference before they pick a new mod..

Re: IRAQIS - LIFE IS GETTING BETTER: Most Iraqis believe life is better for them now

the iraqis have voted with their feet.
millions are leaving the country we have destroyed.
nobody left when saddam was in power - they had electricity, schools, etc and didn't have hundreds of thousands of their dead friends and family in the street.

END OF ARGUMENT.
