Published on: 03/12/08 Police Wednesday arrested one man and were seeking a second suspect in the shooting death of Eve Carson of Athens, the University of North Carolina student body president who was slain last week.
Demario James Atwater, 21, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Carson, Chapel Hill, N.C., police Chief Brian Curran said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators think Atwater and Lovett are the two men seen in the two sets of surveillance photos that police obtained when the pair apparently tried to use an ATM card belonging to the 22-year-old Carson.
Atwater, of Durham, was ordered held without bond at an initial court appearance Wednesday. Shackled at the ankles and waist and with a public defender at his side, Atwater only whispered "yes" when asked whether he understood the charges against him. His next court date was set for March 24.
Late Tuesday, Chapel Hill police learned from a tipster that Atwater possibly could be found in a Durham home and worked with police from that city to converge on the residence.
Atwater was arrested early Wednesday morning, at the same 5 a.m. hour that Carson's body was found exactly one week earlier, as he emerged from the home. He was detained at the Chapel Hill Police Department much of Wednesday before being charged.
Lovett was still at large Wednesday evening, and Curran sought the public's help in finding him.
Carson's killing stunned the UNC and Athens communities. Hundreds mourned her death at a funeral service Sunday in Athens.
The woman, who attended UNC on a prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship and earned Phi Beta Kappa, was the 2004 class valedictorian and student body president at Clarke Central High School in Athens. She was remembered as an irrepressibly friendly young woman with a seemingly boundless future.
"We must offer still comfort to a family in mourning, to Eve's family," said Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy at the news conference. "I hope all of us will keep Eve's parents, her brother and all her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers."
According to the North Carolina Department of Correction's Web site, Atwater was convicted in 2005 for felony breaking and entering and last June was convicted for possession of a firearm by a felon, also a felony. He was put on probation and received suspended sentences for both crimes.
