NEW YORK (CBS) ― A massive crane collapsed at a construction site on Manhattan's East Side on Saturday afternoon. The 19-story crane damaged three buildings and completely destroyed a fourth.
Mayor Bloomberg held a news conference on the tragic accident that killed at least four people, and left several others trapped and injured.
"There is a lot that we do not know about why and what exactly happened, but you should know that we are using every bit of our efforts to conduct a rescue operation. And one of primary goals is to make sure that in doing that, we don't cause any further damage to adjacent buildings where people might be, or in that building that has the crane right on top of it," Bloomberg said.
The building that suffered the most damage was a five-story brownstone with a bar in the first floor, that fortunately was closed at the time of the accident.
The accident happened on 51st Street near 2nd Avenue at about 2:20 p.m. People in the area reported hearing a terrible roar as the structure detached from a large building under construction.

It's scary that a five-story building can be completely demolished by having a crane fall on it.

i worked for a trash company as risk assessement for a summer job from college. The general rule is: For each story a object falls it's mass gets increased by 2.25 times.
A loaded trash truck in pennsylvania weighs 75,000 pounds. So it would not surprise me for this crane to weigh 75 tons (150,000 pounds) at the very minimum.
Very scary stuff, project manager is goin to lose his shirt in this one and rightuflly so, because this type of machine has it's limitations. Very sad for people to die from other's negligence to adhere to standards.

The steel structure of the crane doesn't weigh too much. What weighs a bunch is the counter-balance which might be tens of tons. When it falls on the wooden roof and floor of the apartments below it will cut like a hot knife though butter.

The mass wouldn't increase by being in motion ( falling). If it weighs 100 tons, it weighs 100 tons.

your right the mass is not increased but it is a like scenario meaning if it falls X stories the impact of the fall would be like it had a increased mass. Wrong wording on my part.

MomentumMomentum (p) is the quantity of motion in a body. A heavy body moving at a fast velocity is difficult to stop. A light body at a slow speed, on the other hand can be stopped easily. So momentum has to do with both mass and velocity.
