Re: CLASSIC WRESTLING THREAD (Greatest ever face/heel turns)
Hulk Hogan turning bad and joining the NWO is possibly the biggest ever.
Turns against Hogan over the years have also been huge:
- Andre The Giant turning bad so he could face Hogan at WM-III.
- Paul Orndorff turning on Hogan resulting in a monumental feud.
- Randy Savage turning on Hogan to set up WM-V.
Sgt. Slaughter turning bad back in 1990 was huge as well - one of the biggest American Hero's turning his back and joining up with the heels.
Roddy Piper being turned face by the WWF in 1987 en route to his "retirement match" was big at the time. Before that was one of the biggest heels in the business.
Randy Savage turning good in 1987 after WM-III was big also. Was one of the biggest heels for years and had to fill the face void of Steamboat's departure and Jake Roberts's regular injuries.
Ric Flair turning face in 1989 was a big change in the NWA/WCW. They really had no new faces for him to feud with after his classic feud with Ricky Steamboat was over. So they turned him good with a brutal attack by Terry Funk. Of course, they turned him back to heel less than a year later but it was fun while it lasted.
Lex Luger's eventual face turn in the WWE after starting as a heel was big because he had to fill the void of Hulk Hogan being gone. Despite trying to make him the top face, they never let him win the title.
As someone else mentioned, Barry Windham turning heel in 1988 was easily one of the biggest heel turns ever. No one saw it coming with him and Luger being face tag champs together. But the NWA reached a point where they just didn't have enough heels go they had to turn him and eventually also turned Ron Garvin a couple months later which shocked people also.
The various Russians over the years turning face always felt big. Nikita Koloff turning face in 1986 after Magnum TA's accident was huge. Losing Magnum was tough and they needed to spice things up.
The Rock and Steve Austin had some heel/face turns that were big and kept their feud going a long time. They kept switching Rock from face to heel to face, and then heel when he finally became WWF champ the first time. Austin changed a few times also.
Some of the Undertaker's heel and face turns were big. He had the drawing power to be the top heel or face at anytime - the WWF could spin him however they needed him and it would all keep working.
So many turns! I could go on so much here.
