EXCLUSIVE: McCain?s Foreign Affairs Speech <del>Plagiarizes</del> 1996 Address By Adm. Timothy Ziemer (UPDATED

CORRECTION: As a blog that strives to maintain credibility and transparency, we would like to explain our mistake. When we were alerted to the tip that Adm. Ziemer gave a similar speech in 1996, we searched LexisNexis and McCain?s campaign site for whether the senator used the disputed phrases before that time. We did not find anything. After we published the post, the McCain campaign contacted us and pointed to a speech given by the senator in 1995, which appears on McCain?s Senate site. As soon as we were alerted to the error, we rushed to publish a correction. Once again, we regret the error, and we apologize for it.
Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) gave a foreign policy speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. He stated:
I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. The lives of a nation?s finest patriots are sacrificed.
Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted; economies are damaged; strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. Whatever gains are secured, it is loss the veteran remembers most keenly.
Watch it:
<center> <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/plugins/flvplayer.swf?file=http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/mccaindetest.320.240.flv&autoStart=false" id="em-flvmccaindetest32024020926" name="em-flvmccaindetest32024020926" bgcolor="#ffffff" quality="high" wmode="transparent" height="260" width="320">
<script type="text/javascript"> var flvmccaindetest32024020926 = new SWFObject('/wp-content/plugins/flvplayer.swf?file=http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/mccaindetest.320.240.flv&autoStart=false', 'em-flvmccaindetest32024020926', '320', '260', '6', '#ffffff'); flvmccaindetest32024020926.addParam('quality', 'high'); flvmccaindetest32024020926.addParam('wmode', 'transparent'); flvmccaindetest32024020926.write('flvmccaindetest32024020926'); </script></center> These lines are not McCain?s own. As TP reader 5th Estate discovered, they were in fact taken largely from a 1996 speech by ret. Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer. Below is a comparison of McCain?s address yesterday with Ziemer?s in 1996:
<center>
<table border="1"> <tbody><tr> <td align="left" valign="top">Ziemer</td> <td align="left" valign="top">McCain</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top">War is awful and when nations seek to resolve their differences by fighting, a million tragedies ensue. [Link]</td> <td align="left" valign="top">When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. [Link]</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top">War is wretched beyond description. [Link]</td> <td align="left" valign="top">It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. [Link]</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top">Nothing, not the valor with which it is fought, nor the cause with which it serves can glorify war. [Link]</td> <td align="left" valign="top">Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. [Link]</td> </tr> </tbody></table> </center> Nowhere in yesterday?s speech does McCain give credit to Ziemer. Additionally, it?s not the first occasion that McCain has stolen Ziemer?s words, as 5th Estate notes. McCain also used these words on Aug. 20, 2007:
?We do share a secret, but it is not a romantic remembrance of war,? McCain said early in his speech. ?War is awful. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. Nothing, not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war.?
It?s unclear whether Ziemer is tied to the McCain campaign, but a search of both his campaign and Senate websites turned up no references to the admiral. He does, however, have ties to the Bush administration. In June 2006, Bush appointed Ziemer to head his President?s Malaria Initiative. Ziemer was also honored with a spot in First Lady Laura Bush?s box at the President?s 2007 State of the Union address.

Digg It!

<!-- post updates would go here in theory --> UpdateAs Huffington Post noted yesterday, portions of McCain's World Affairs Council speech were recycled from a pre-war speech the senator gave in 2001.

UpdateIt appears that Ziemer's speech may have been plagiarized from McCain. According to the McCain campaign, the senator used these lines before Ziemer -- in 1995. We regret the error.

Clinton Claims Bush Plagiarized ‘98 Speech

by Scott Ott

(2004-08-11) — Former President Bill Clinton today charged the Bush administration with “plagiarism of ideas” and offered as evidence a 1998 speech Mr. Clinton made to explain his order to bomb Iraq.

“If you read the text of my speech, you’ll see that President Bush lifted practically all of my reasons for attacking Iraq and used them as his own,” said Mr. Clinton.

It?s no secret that the right STILL hasn?t figured out how to effectively use the internets, so it comes as no surprise that the Grand Poobah of right wing radio talkies <corrected>, Rush Limbaugh, has made a complete fool of himself by using a 12 year old essay by a 10th grader to attack Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama.
The best story I?ve heard this week by far was told today over lunch. Apparently, a co-worker of mine named George listens to the Rush Limbaugh show in his car, and yesterday heard him discussing Barak Obama?s comments about similarities between the recent housing crisis and the lead-up to the Great Depression. I imagine the comments were referring to the obvious similarities between those who obtained ridiculous sub-prime loans and those in the 1920s who bought stock they couldn?t afford on margin. However, Limbaugh decided that Obama?s comments were the result of a crazy ?liberal education? - and even remarks how ?lucky? he is that he didn?t graduate from college, thus allowing him to escape the perils of actual knowledge.
To prove his point, Rush says he did some Google searches for ?Great Depression? and then proceeds to attack each of the results as liberal propaganda. Because we all know that college professors teach straight off of Google results pages. So my friend is listening and hears something rather striking? the name of one of our mutual colleagues - Paul Alexander Gusmorino (?The Third!? - I love the way Limbaugh says that).
Limbaugh found among the top results an essay written by Paul, entitled ?The Main Causes of the Great Depression.? He quotes Paul?s essay and refutes each of its claims, dissecting them as if they were part of a Harvard professor?s lecture on the subject. He doesn?t pull any punches either. ?Mr. Gusmorino, you better check Karl Marx and see if you plagiarized him in putting this piece together.?

Ouch. Those words would be harsh if they really were for a Harvard lecturer. But that?s not who wrote this essay. It was my friend who works as a Program Manager at Microsoft. When he was in 10th grade. Read on?
The story checks out. I followed his link and sure enough, the transcript is right on El Rashbo?s website. (scroll down a bit) He even has the Freepers going nuts over this.

The Plagiarized Lies of Ann Coulter

You don?t have to read any of Ann Coulter's columns or books to know what a hate-fueled orgy of lies, half-truths, and lies they are. I can?t even begin to describe every single lie that she has put to pen in her entire career. Her lies are more abundant than the stars, more plentiful than zits at a Daily Kos convention. Let?s face it: She?s a lying liar who lies. But thanks to the hard work of an ingenious university professym, it now appears that her lies aren't even original, but rather stolen directly from the pages of esteemed progressive publications such as the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and the Planned Parenthood leaflet, 101 Ways to Hide your Abortion from Mom and Dad.

Determined to find something to attack Coulter for besides her looks, a nonpartisan and incredibly hissy amatuer investigator ran everything she?s ever said or scribbled down since grade school through a state-of-the-art pattern recognition program. What he learned threatened to sour the proudly objective researcher against conservative pundits forever.

According to John Barrie, a Professym of Indigenous Norwegian Prophylactic Juggling at the University of Berkeley, most of the words Coulter uses in her books and columns have been used before, by other writers, and occasionally in the same sequences.

In many cases, these sequences are hardly coincidental. As Barrie discovered, Coulter would often take someone else?s words, replace them with her own, shuffle them around, and sometimes go so far as to change the entire sentence structure around to conceal her crime. That?s plagiarism, folks, and leave it up to conservatives to turn it into something dirty.

Dragging civilized discourse into the mud is par for Ann's course, ape-like, back hairs. Coulter, who once wrote that we should invade the terrorist?s countries, kill their leaders, and convert the rest to Christianity, has never apologized to either progressives or the terrorists for her insensitive remarks Her attack on the bereaved 9/11 widows left me angry, bitter, and chaffed in areas I care not to mention. I?ve made no secret of my unbridled hatred for Coulter, with her cottage cheese thighs and ratty, bleach-blonde hair. But now she may be guilty of a crime far more serious than transforming progressive males into catty women, and I could just scratch her eyes out for it.
