Im sure by rule it could, but we all know that would never happen. Well, maybe with Bud Selig in office it might, but anyone with a braincell as commissioner would say "you fuckers are waiting until tomorrow night for this thing to clear up"....

I thought the same thing. Instead of stalling a bit, you would have thought they were the team with the lead.
Looking at radar on wunderground.com, this looks like a complete mess. The heaviest stuff is just moving in, and it seems like it'll be around a bit.

I know the rule says otherwise but they would have played 9, this is the world series...there is no way they don't play the full 9 here...and the commisioner reconfirmed that...it's happened before, long ago....and there's just no way they will decide a WS with a 5 inning game.
The new rain rule threw a wrench into it.

There's NEVER been a World Series game END BEFORE it's completely finished, never been a 5 inning WS game, what part of that do you NOT understand?

According to ESPN this morning, Selig passed an 'executive decision' rule sometime between Sat and last nite as to how this game would proceed. But you already knew that since you and Bud are so tight. 12io4j2w90And I guess Bud forgot to tell all of the sportsbooks about the new rule regarding WS games since they all seem to be grading Philly a winner. Maybe you should have called them up before the game ended and let them know.

I think you got eaten alive by Archie J Man. From what I heard there has never in the history of the world series had a series ending game called for rain, or shortened. However, there is no rule it must go 9. Had Tampa not tied it up the rules clearly state the game would have been called. Also, the rule was just recently changed, I think they said last year, that a tied game at any point after the 5th inning is just suspended, and started where it was stopped at the next opportunity. The books, Vegas rules still go back to the old rules, reverts back to last completed frame, and Philly bettors cashed. But if the talking heads had thier facts in order, it has never happened before, and vp of MLB operations stated game would have been called by old rules. I personally think they were praying for tampa to tie it to suspend it, and could have called it before thier at bat.

The director of MLB operations gave an interview right after the call and said it would have been called, obviously he had not talked to his boss Bud either. It was not until alter that Bud came out and said, they would have imposed martial law and overruled thier own rules, or put a never ending rain delay in. They played and kept playing when they should not so the new rules would support them and not make them look worse than they already did for starting the game in the first place. The only reason it went as long as it did was so immediately after the Drays tied it they could quote the new rule. The game should have never been started, and when they got in a pickle, which they were in the 4th inning, in became a nightmare. They would have had to either break thier own rules, or make a ludricrous 12 hour plus rain delay. Biggest mistake was starting the game in the first place. Second biggest mistake was letting it go past 5 innings, when it was pouring after the 4th. A fitting debacle to this incredibly horribly officiated series. I see another rule change in the immediate future, so big coward in charge does not get egg on his face. That would have happened if Tampa did not tie it up.
