GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

Discussion and summary

Discussion and summary

I wanted to touch on something I feel is important to gambling, that is being away from gambling. Though it may sound like a paradox, I strongly feel that stepping away from the games, not living and dying by every pitch and bucket, and taking time out to get away from everything gambling is important to success. Much like a vacation may recharge the batteries of an employee who has fallen into a rut, staying away from the television or computer can give a fresh perspective.

All too often I see people tempted to fall into the trap of betting the TV games or following their bets every minute and second of the day. These people think that if they miss a minute their bets will magically lose or they will somehow miss key information that will unlock the golden door of winning. There are many things I have bet on that I have never seen a minute of and my knowledge consists merely of scores and league standings. Whether or not these lead to better winning percentages or worse is debatable.

Take time out to smell the roses. See a movie or read a book. Go to a concert or enjoy a nice meal in a fine restaurant. The games will still be there and will go on without you. Your cheering and rooting them on and living and dying with every minute has no bearing on how the participants play and the ultimate outcome. Yesterday's game is forgotten as soon as tomorrow comes, so why not enjoy the finer things in life. There will be another ball game, another bet, and another time to win or lose.

Two words... Go camping!
I don't care if you live in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, or the gentle landscape of the Mid-West, just go the fuck outside & take in some mother nature. With all the crazy shit going on in our lives it is refreshing just to breathe some fresh air every once in a while & put things in perspective.

Discussion and summary

Someone emailed me a couple of questions regarding this thread and I thought I would answer them here in case others were wondering the same thing.

GD,
Do you really bet all these games in this thread?

It would be completely pointless both to me and to anyone reading if I didn't. It's sort of like playing poker for free money and real money, you tend to approach it differently. One of the reasons you see these numbers I am betting is because they are readily available at some of the more popular shops and the purpose of this is not to show how sharp I am by getting the best number necessarily. By no means is it a comprehensive list of everything I bet. I have excluded futures, props and other bets for a reason.

GD,
You are losing money in this thread. Do I take it you are down for the year?

My purpose of this is not really to brag or boast and whether I am up or down is largely irrelevant to me and my tiny e-dick. It is simply a log of bets that is open to see and up to you to interpret the good, bad, ugly. If you take into account deposit bonuses, re-up bonuses, loyalty bonuses, futures, other bets not posted and props then I am in the plus significantly for the year. As far as I am concerned that is a completely separate discussion though and not something this thread is focusing on.

Discussion and summary

Feeling good today. Wake up at a decent hour without the cloudiness that has been in my head for the last few weeks due to a virus. Time to get the body back healing and that can go for the bankroll as well. Have a list of goals to do today and going to make sure I utilize every second of the day. Will have some plays as well and am optimistic that they will fit into the overall plan. Starting to get some more consistency with everything and hopefully can get out of this funk that I have been in, both physically and bankroll-wise.

Going to harp again on the mind and body connection. I've touched on in several times but looking back at my records and the dip in my bankroll I have to say that, even though it is a small sample size, there is lots of evidence that when you are feeling bad it affects your bets. Now it may seem silly to some when you simply have to click a few buttons that a cold or virus could be an effective deterrent. However, it could be as much psychosomatic as it is real. Perhaps there is something to that placebo effect and those cough drops really are a bookie's best friend. I digress to sarcasm of course, but only half in jest. Now that I am feeling better, establishing a routine, and am able to exercise the mind and body connection seems to correlate to winning wagers. Perhaps it's all hooey or what they call voodoo economics, but as the Monkees (or was it the Beatles?) said "I'm a believer".

Discussion and summary

A must-win situation. You hear that phrase used often in sports. It is thrown around as the catch-phrase near the end of the season and during playoff time. A team must win in order to stay alive or advance in these cases. We are reaching that time of year in soccer leagues in Europe. Not only are there must-win games with championship implications, but must-win games that teams need in order not to be relegated to a lower league. These situations don't happen in American sports but served the purpose of making more games meaningful.

Now let's approach this from a handicapping perspective. Team A need a win and team B has no real ramifications and is merely playing for pride. Obviously the handicappers take this into account and install a "gambling tax" on team A. Oftentimes, team A may not even be the better side but simply have more motivation. Psychologically we want to place our stakes with Team A as surely they will win when everything is it stake. Logically speaking though, the bookmaker has already taken into account the gravity of the situation and thus likely inflated the line on Team A. Team A is more or less the square side as bettors will be coming to the window to bet in fistfuls on them as they do not want to face the dire consequences of a loss. However, if we think this through Team B is likely the better value and thus should merit the bet taking simply this into account without other extraneous factors.

I would be interested to see some data that is reflective of the results in "must win" situations. My mind tells me that taking the team with less at stake likely would result in a boost to your bankroll. Then again, my mind plays tricks on me so I could have entirely wrong. Just something to chew on.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

Someone smart taught me that "must win" teams may be in that position because they are not very good.

Something I have used since, the more I see "must win" teams go down, even against teams who are out of it themselves and have nothing to gain, the more I'm glad I ignore that as a betting angle. I do not ever bet on a team because they are "must win". If I find other reasons to bet them, so be it. Also, may bet the other team if the must win team looks overpriced.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

Certainly a good point there about them not being that good. There is a bit of other things that come into play in soccer when there are must-win games both with the better teams and with the worse teams.

I am simply theorizing that as a general rule the value is going to be betting against the must-win team. Certainly it should not be bet blindly as other things may have an influence but I am postulating that if you tallied the rate of return betting on the must-win team versus the rate of return betting against them, fading them would come out far ahead.

Would be interesting to see some subsets of data regarding this.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

I am not a subsets or data guy. Actually, i was just looking at the new American Idol Upper Deck trading Cards, I would order a Carrie Underwood autograph card, looks like there isnt one. They did have a set a few years ago with a Carrie autograph card.

this set you can get autographs from the entire top 36, as well as Idols from the past. I do not want an Elliot yamin or Michael Johns auto card so much.

This should be the only chance ever to get a Stevie Wright autograph as her singing career is deader than the dodo.

I would only hope if I ordered a box to get a Nathaniel Marshall autograph and a Jorge Nunez autograph. 91023i2ndw;l

And if I got an Adam lambert autograph, well, I dont DARE to dream! That would be hopes and dreams coming true.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

you would think they would have Kady Malloy autograph cards and a "Win a date with Kady" sweepstakes, but no mention of that at all. Horrible card set.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

It would be cool if they went old school and put like three prospects on one card, sorta like this Ripken rookie:

Then they could fit all the gay guys on one card, they could go with the hotties (Stevie, Casey Carlson, that Arianna chick we've already forgot about), as well as a batshit crazy future stars featuring Tatiana, Nick/Normund, and that Jackie Tohn chick.

Two things:
1) I should be in charge of marketing. (I'd include one of those rare insert type deals with swatches of Kady's dress, you'd buy every case).

2) What does this have to do with the incredibly dwindling bankroll thread? Were you afraid to bump the Idol thread thinking maybe someone would fear it was out of place in the main forum due to the >100 views?

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

You know what the irony is in you posting that Mr. Smith?

Upper Deck is actually based in North Las Vegas and I'm pretty damn sure that I applied for something like head of marketing there about 2 years ago. Think I even had a few email with exchanges with someone there about the position.

True story.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

I have 3 of those cards

Ripken used to come into a restaurant I worked in in Florida during spring training, saw him maybe 3 or 4 times. he would always sign autographs to anyone who walked up to him. Seemed like a nice guy.

Frank Rosenthal used to come in too, not kidding, bartenders used to ask him who he liked in monday night football, they said his picks won a lot more than lost

Discussion and summary

A couple of those "must-win" situations that were discussed yesterday come up Monday. Sunday, fading one of them that I passed on would have resulted in a +560 range hit. Selective reasoning to be sure. In both these cases they do fall under the category of the worse team favored over the better team as well that Mr. Smith brought up.

EPL- Newcastle in a must-win over Portsmouth. Newcastle at home, Portsmouth will have points to play for as they are not officially clear as well.

ECL- Lowly Norwich needs a win deperately. They are at home against top of the table Reading. Reading could still use some points to clinch a playoff spot.

So both teams they are playing against are superior according to the year's results and both teams do have something to play for as well.

Small sample size, but we shall see.

Re: GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

You'll also notice I am betting against both the Red Sox and the Yankees. This is not by accident. Theorizing that after they play each other in a series, they tend to have an emotional letdown in the next series. Again, just a theory. Due to that and the must win fades there are an unusual number of double/two-unit plays for the day.
