Of that, $83 billion is in direct loans to the company, and AIG (AIG, Fortune 500) can borrow up to $30 billion more. GM's stock is not expected to trade publicly until 2010 at the earliest.

Bank bailouts: U.S. taxpayers have given 534 financial institutions $204.2 billion in capital injections, of which $70.2 billion has been paid back.
Banks are eager to pay back their bailout dollars, as public scrutiny has grown about the inner workings of bailed-out banks, including executive compensation packages, lending decisions and earnings. Furthermore, bailed-out banks have to pay the government hefty dividends.
The money was supposed to go to healthy financial institutions, but the health of some of those banks, namely Citigroup (C, Fortune 500) and Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), has since worsened. They had to get bailed out again. They have yet to pay back the $45 billion they each owe taxpayers.
One of the hundreds of TARP recipients has been in the news of late: Troubled commercial lender CIT Group, which warned in a government filing Tuesday that it could be forced to declare bankruptcy if it can't strike a deal with private lenders. Taxpayers have $2.3 billion at stake.

This is over your head.With the union benefits they do not need the government run Medicaid, they have their own with the retirement package they have. Win, win and they do not feed off the federal trough.

Here's how a free market works -- everyone is their own boss. No payroll, no coerced benefits...nothing.

If you want to provide a service for Company 'X', offer them a contract (or they offer you a contract) on mutually agreed terms. Beautiful huh?

In the free market, the best companies compete for the best workers (the best wages, perks, benefits etc.) while the worst companies go out of business and the lazy lethargic among us starve and try to convince private charities and churches to keep paying their rent, food, drug addictions etc.

Now, if you're going to argue that you can't make a 'living wage' assembling auto parts all your life, you would be right.

The solution is to upgrade your skills/education and you won't have to.

You know, the socialist in these imploding welfare states are going to have a very, VERY difficult time in the coming years.

Things like $71 an hour for driving a bolt into a piece of sheet metal, or state-run health care, will thankfully become a thing of the past.

Fact is, for every union worker bitching about his/her already inflated salary and benefits, there are millions and millions of ambitious, hard working individuals around the world itching for the opportunity to raise their standard of living -- an opportunity the vilified and overtaxed "rich" are only too happy to take.

As a consumer, I'm not willing to pay double for my laptop or TV or SUV, just so some ungrateful inefficient floor worker in my neighborhood can earn a middle management salary.

My advice to you tank is to save your pennies and enjoy your gravy train while it lasts...because you are in for a rude awakening in the years ahead.

The welfare state is a mirage...a total and complete mirage.
