Good things to say about both countries...but for me the choice was easy....Thailand is a haven for single guys and golf enthusiasts....much cheaper to live also....a condo on the beach for 600 bucks a month was hard to turn down...the view from my window overlooking the Gulf of Thailand is incredible...I could go on for an hour about the land of smiles....

The hospitals are first class and the care is the same...medical proceedures are about half the cost in Thailand...Dental facilities compare to the States....Most of the Pattaya hospital staff is trained in the States....
Over the counter drugs are much more available here at half the price...

The outdoor dining facilities would make the board of health in the USA cringe.....other than that, the infrastructure is great....the main difference is that I am never looking over my shoulder here in Thailand like I did in Costa Rica...although I am always cognizant of my surroundings....I feel a lot safer knowing the country has a police department that protects tourists and residents with visas....

Drawbacks of Costa Rica...
Much more crime there now compared to when I arrived in 2000...
It rains 8 months of the year of which 5 months very heavy...cannot play golf from Sept-Nov..
Costa Rica seems to discourage gringo involvement with banking...
Traffic fines are 5 times the cost of the same fines in the USA...
But it is a beautiful country and the people are good for the most part...the government is backwards, especially when sportsbook clerks make more money than the police, teachers, and other government workers...

The weather is very hot from April-June...you better have a good air conditioner....
The traffic can be hectic driving along the roads with motorbikes and sometimes animals..
The fast lanes on the highway are really fast...drivers think they have the right of way all the time and the motorbikes and motorcycles dart in and out of traffic fearlessly...the highways are like the states, very modern and kept up...
You better have an iron stomach to eat all the foods that are sold on the streets 24 hours a day...
And lastly, gambling is illegal here...but no problems with the internet except maybe for a few major hotels....

Thailand has a conglomerate number of people from all over the world come visit and live....European food and restaurants flourish here if you serve a good product....top of the line German, Swiss, and Scandinavian restaurants are here to serve...my favorite dish is Swedish meatballs....
Clothing apparrel is 3-4 times cheaper than the US because everything is made here...be prepared to pay more for electronic and computer equipment...

With a passport you can stay for about 3 weeks max with an option to get another couple weeks extended if you make a visa run to another country and come back the same day...for those of us over 50, a retirement visa is available to stay year around which costs around 75 bucks but with proof that you have at leat 25 grand in the bank when you apply...all I have to do is check in every 3 months at immigration which takes about 5-10 minutes to get your passport stamped...at the end of every year you also have to show immigration your bank records showing you have sufficient money to stay...

Pattaya Beach is an adult disneyland....families would have a hard time surviving here....
But there are families from all over the world that visit....they just don't live here....

I would absolutely choose Thailand over CR anyday.
CR too dangerous for me. Too many drugs for too cheap there too. Too many people who would want to shank/rob/kidnap my huero ass. It would be fun to become fluent in the spanish, though.
Never been to Thailand but SE Asia is my next travel destination and I'm very excited to visit.

San Jose is an armpit and as VD says not safe. But there are some beautiful beaches like Manuel d Antonio that are a few hours away; laid back and quiet. Jaco has more action with girls a plenty. Beaches of Phuket are as good as they get and brings in a nice European crowd from the months of January to March with some major talent. Red Light district a few minutes away if you care to partake but beware the lady boys, and don't think you can't be fooled. Many a men have been psychologically scarred for life. Been to both places and would prefer Thailand though it does get very humid at times.

Good thread. Big thanks to viejo for some great info in here for those interested in that type of life. I definitely plan on making a trip to Thialand sometime soon, although definitely wouldn't be able to live there anytime soon with their no working policy.

Guys, I'll weigh in here. I've been to both places but only as a tourist. Both are insanely beautiful in very different ways. The trip over to Thailand is brutal bc of the distance but well worth it. CR is so damn close to FL making a trip at least once is a must if you leave in the SE US. I love both places but Thailand wins hands down.
BTW, I've been to Brazil as well and Thailand is better than that as well. After I went to Brazil, I thought now way could anything top this but was wrong.
Thailand is so "otherworldly" it is hard to describe. But, for me, I think it added to the serenity of the place. You are so far away, so many times zones away, you really can feel yourself slipping away from reality as the days pass. You lose your reference point on almost everything. Sporting evens come on at odd times. Calling home to the US is very difficult and hard to keep track of so only adds to the ambiance.
Being in Thailand and coming back to the US is like staying a week in a five star hotel, being pampered, having everything catered to you, everyone smiling and jumping to make your stay comfortable. It's literally like that; most everyone you run into is upbeat, smiling, polite and of course trying to cater to you for your US dollar. But somehow, it doesn't feel like they are after your money. It isn't overt. It's hard to describe.
Most of you guys know by now that VD knows what he is doing. His opinion counts. Hang out for a round of golf with this guy or have long dinner with him and you will see a guy totally at peace with himself and his surroundings.
Any guy under the age of 80 that can break away for a couple of weeks should really make it a point to get to Thailand.

Thailand isn't called "the land of smiles" for nothing....I have never heard any tourist complain about their time spent in Thailand...

I agreed. Safety in Costa Rica is becoming an issue, it is not like Mexico or any other central american country but it is not what it used to be.
Nature, both countries have plenty, from a tourist point of view Costa Rica has a more developed tourist industry in terms of safety, infrastructure for the tourist on remote locations and attention (language, customer service, etc).
Medical private facilities I will give the vote to Costa Rica, for those who like US certificates, they are certified on US standards and are in constant improvement, the fact of being that close to the North allows them to be quite up to date.
Food, a tie. Thai food is as awesome as it can be, but after a few months you may be missing a lot of western food which is far more common in CR.
Prices, Thai for sure is cheaper, on almost every aspect. Cost of life in Costa Rica is growing by the minute, too many Northerns going to settle down there doesnt make it easier.
Girls, easy one. Costa Rica's latinas hands down, Thai girls are cute sure, but you dont put a latina next to an asian girl, unless you put enough silicone on the right areas there to fill up all the missing meat. Their "hola papi" attitude is a total magnet.
Finally, stay away from border areas in Thai and you will be fine. Thais are good to pick up fights with neighbouring countries. If you do go to Thailand, take your time and jump to Vietnam, it is more of a family friendly country than adult oriented Thai and it has everything and more too.
Cambodia is quite beautiful too but very poor, they will definitely catch up on the upcoming years.
