Pretty surprising that they were the team to land this guy. I thought the Cubs would get him. Detroit was apparently going after him also.

I was kinda shocked by this one myself....

A's cut a ton of salary in the off season and I keep hearing how they wanted to sign someone 'exciting' and would 'put people in seats'. Not sure if this one is it, but we shall see.

He should help with the latin crowd up there. The last time i was at an A's game i didnt see many latins in the seats.

Tough to do better than this signing if he is as good as advertised.

Supposed to be a 30 hr guy with a chance of being 30/30. 5 tool talent that should hit for good average also.

Not sure I would have signed with Oakland if i were him. No lineup protection and huge park. In Miami you have Reyes, Hanley, and LoMo with you to help you put up huge numbers and get a massive contract thanks to it.

Their attendance is horrible period. Not just with latins..

Nasty outdated stadium makes it tough to get people there. That and the fact its in Oakland, makes it even worse. Only game I went to last year was bc I got free tix vs the Rangers.

Re: A's land stud cuban OF Cespedes

Some of the local South Florida radio talk is that Cespedes wanted to get as far from Cuba as possible. Outside of the Mariners, he's done that. To me, this was solely about money. The Marlins offered him $36M over 6 years, the A's $36M over 4 years. Do the math.

I did the math.

Like Cespedes, I preferred the A's offer.

Re: A's land stud cuban OF Cespedes

I wish the Marlins had gotten Cespedes, but tossing $9M per year to a guy who has never taken one MLB at bat is risky. The Marlins thoroughly checked this guy out and Guillen said the comparisons to Bo Jackson are ridiculous. Guillen compared him to a poor man's Raul Mondesi.

I looked back at what Cuban defectors did in the majors recently and from a hitting perspective it's been less than expected. Kendry Morales had one good year and Alexei Ramirez has been solid, but that's it, and neither of those guys were making close to what Cespedes will earn.

Re: A's land stud cuban OF Cespedes

Go read Jonah Keri's column on him from yesterday. Grantland.com.
Not a badly written article. LOL it has another Bo Jackson reference. My God, can we just allow a guy one at bat before making such a lofty comparison? I didn't watch the 20 minute video, though. I can't watch a 20 minute porno, I sure as hell can't watch some guy stretching and doing baseball warm-ups for 20 minutes.

Yeah I didn't watch the whole video, it's more for comedy than anything.

Jonah Keri is a very good and informative writer at Grantland. Him and Rany Jazayerli are both must reads for any baseball fan or bettor, imo.

i sure as hell wouldn't bet against this guy being a stud from all ive seen/read. he is in a tough spot though...if he can hit 30 hrs a year in oakland with a good average around .280+ he will (or at least should) get 15-20 M/ year in his next contract.

Re: A's land stud cuban OF Cespedes

he's gonna be a star from day 1 i believe... or well, a very solid player, but someone who makes plenty of highlights, etc

20/30 with 70rbi/70runs is not out of the question. as well as hitting around 270.

perfect type of signing for the a's since they cant get FAs. and they saved $$$ by dealing gio/cahill for prospects.

beane knows what he's doing
