Lifeguards are worth at least that even if they never leave their seat. Just keeping a
constant eye on the water and monitoring the boaters, swimmers and everything else
that can go on out there is worth it. People get out of line constantly and if it weren't
for their mere presence with that bullhorn there'd be a lot more potentially serious
problems. It's crazy how stupid some people are in the water.

I doubt they get very good reception - if any on the beach. No towers are near the ocean.

Lifeguards are something HS/college kids do for spending money in the summer time.
Hardest part of the job is figuring out which # sunscreen keeps you from burning yet shows off the summer tan.
We used to pass out a couple t-shirts and whistles to the first people on scene and we were covered, way more concerned about who was cooking the hotdogs.
We move on.

Being a lifeguard in California can be unbelievably lucrative. If we had only known, many of us would have packed our bags and headed west for a career on the California beach.
Our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com found that lifeguards make a fortune in Los Angeles County. Seven lifeguards made more than $300,000 and 82 lifeguards had total earnings that exceed $200,000 in 2019, the latest year available.
