Billy Beane and Bill James are also racist handicappers

Moneyball also touches on the A's methods of prospect selection. Sabermetricians argue that a college baseball player's chance of MLB success is much higher than a traditional high school draft pick. Beane maintains that high draft picks spent on high school prospects, regardless of talent or physical potential as evaluated by traditional scouting, are riskier than if they were spent on more polished college players. Lewis cites A's minor leaguer Jeremy Bonderman, drafted out of high school in 2001 over Beane's objections, as but one example of precisely the type of draft pick Beane would avoid. Bonderman had all of the traditional "tools" that scouts look for, but thousands of such players have been signed by MLB organizations out of high school over the years and failed to develop. Lewis explores the A's approach to the 2002 MLB Draft, when the team had a nearly unprecedented run of early picks. The book documents Beane's often-tense discussions with his scouting staff (who favored traditional subjective evaluation of potential rather than objective sabermetrics) in preparation for the draft to the actual draft, which defied all expectations and was considered at the time a wildly successful (if unorthodox) effort by Beane.

St Louis Cardnials are so successfull this year because they get it, college players only please.

The Dodgers, Angels and Yankees still dont get it. Its why they will continue to suffer. Instead of firing Mike Scoisia and Don Mattingly as scapegoats, get some White college players instead. FIRE some of these fukkin GMS, and owners.

As a freshman I struck him out 2 times in 3 pitches in a scrimmage when he was a senior.

Well they might feel you get a better product for the money with more mature players plus a better feel for the player stats in the NCAA

however beane did bring in cespedes

I remember the A's a few years ago having an all white team on defense.

By drafting primarily NCAA players. By limiting the amount of foreigners and hs players

a) you don't draft foreigners
b) got any numbers on how many blacks are playing college baseball?

Jeremy Bonderman is the one example used... he is not a minority. Racism is not even hinted at...

Stumbled upon Moneyball tonight. I've seen it before but not in a while.

But I am amazed at the picture that Hollywood tried to paint of the 2002 A's. The movie made it look like guys like Hatteburg, Bradford and Rincon were the main reasons the A's won a ton of games. Anyone who followed MLB back then knew the REAL players were Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Chavez and Tejada, none of which were prominent in the movie.

Oakland A's opening day payroll about 26th

Oakland 2nd place 4 games out in the loss column to the astros

Oakland has the 8th best record in MLB

beane's team doing it with relief & defense . Probably the best defense left side infield in MLB

best relief last 30 days in MLB - 7th in staff ERA in 2019

+8.5 units if you bet on the A's all year

I remember what beane said is the first thing he looks for in a pitcher is strikeouts per 9 innings. Beane also said during the off season the best value is middle relief when signing players
Oakland is 2nd in WAR in relief to the yankees. in 2019

beane said he likes college players over high school players because they are more mature.

why is it cheaper to sign college kids over high school ?
Because they can’t use football/baseball scholarships for leverage. Once their baseball eligibility is used up, it’s hard for a 21-YO to sit out a year with no pay.

Cheaper to sign also. This is important to small markets. The white Sox love college pitchers.

This has changed quite a bit since MLB instituted rules to cap pool money for draft picks. Draft picks now have a slot value for each selection. Teams work our “handshake” deals with most players before they draft them. There really isn’t a difference anymore with signing bonuses between HS and college players. College players also still have leverage once they become JR’s. Because of the pool rules which mainly apply to rounds 1-10 you see almost all college SR’s and low demand college JR’s in rounds 9 and 10 who will sign for 5K bonuses

Chapman left the game after one AB today. Hopefully just a precaution. Left ankle soreness.
