ST. PETERSBURG --
The Tampa Bay Rays are no longer carrying three catchers on their roster.
After making the 2008 All-Star team, Dioner Navarro was optioned by the club to AAA Durham on Thursday.
Navarro, hitting .210 with one home run in 36 games, hit .295 in 2008 before regressing to .218 in 2009.
The Rays currently have catchers Kelly Shoppach and John Jaso with the big league club.
To fill the roster spot, the Rays have called up outfielder Matt Joyce. The Armwood High School alumnus was hitting .295 with the Bulls this season. He was traded to the Rays before the 2009 season from Detroit, where he hit .252 with 12 home runs in 242 at bats.
Tampa Bay sent pitcher Edwin Jackson to Detroit to acquire Joyce. Jackson is now with Arizona, and he will face the Rays in the series opener on Friday night at Tropicana Field.
