Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

I have, but I always wonder if it's the right thing to do, or if it's really "helping?" I mean, why in this country is this guy holding a sign on the side of the road? Where did he get the cardboard for the sign and the big black marker to write on it. I don't know about you guys, but I can never find a big black marker when I need one and I even have a draw to keep it in! :doh1

I understand what you are saying.

Absolutely...among the things that I've given are money, food, umbrellas, playing cards, clothes...

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

picked up this 18yo girl by the bus station once , gave her a place to sleep

Was it cold out? - that's really going above and beyond - you should have tried to find her some odd jobs she could perform to make a buck or two

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

I took in three of the homeless. Of course, they are a shepherd husky mix, a lab/pointer mix and a lab/hound mix. Does that count? :)

Your damn right it counts - those guys need and home and have no way to find food

They are more helpless than humans. We have many choices and options in life, the poor puppies do not. Good for you! :thumbsup

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

YES

a few times i have had to mystery shop a place like Carl's Jr or Arby's and given the food to someone holding a sign

One time i went to Carl's and as i made a turn about 1/2-mile away i saw someone holding a sign so i decided that if they were there when i passed by again i would give them my food. she was and i did - i gave her the chicken sandwich, fries and lemonade i got

One time i did an Arby's and i have to get something inside and then @ drive thru. i ate in and while i line @ the drive thru saw someone pushing a cart and obviously homeless. i asked him if he wanted my food and he said he did. i asked him what drink her wanted and he told me and after going thru the drive thru i gave him the roast beef sandwich, fries and a coke and he was grateful for it

i am a softie because if not for having the GREATEST PARENTS EVER i might be that way, too

I WILL NOT give money to someone who is smoking cigarettes or i see drinking alcohol but if they aren't i'll give them a buck or two

I always tell em where the nearest Salvation Army or
Mission/Shelter is.
They never seem to be thankful for the info

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

Yes. I often give a few bucks to guys playing a guitar or saxiphone on the corner. You wonder if they are homeless because they have an instrument. Either way, they are more needy than myself.

I will give a few dollars to homeless ppl if they aren't begging or smoking or drinking. When I visit NY, i often see ppl bundled up during the winter. Usually the ones I help are the ones minding their own business. I ahve given them coffee and snacks. Sometimes a few dollars but not enough to go buy a rock or anything.

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

This is a touchy subject for me.. Been close to being homeless before and it's one of the worst feelings in the world..

A lot of people are one or two paychecks away from being homeless.. Yes I help and always will when I can..

I delivered meals on wheels before. It's totally depressing that people get old and either they have no one, or no one remembers that they are still around. It's truly sad.

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

that is a hard job to bring food to a lonely person and have to leave so fast...keep helping helping helping..

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

I never could leave fast - I'd stay and talk and be soooo late, but, hey, I was volunteering - they couldn't fire me!

When I was in college in Vegas some frat boys and myself were riding down Flamingo Ave and saw a guy with a sign that read, WHY LIE, I NEED A BEER...and at the bottom of the sign said BUD BLESS......We stopped at 7-11 and bought him a 12 pack and some chips......

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

I always help the homeless and always will.

Some people are homeless by choice, some not. It is a sad thing to see homeless people here in America. I get pissed off that there are so much.

Just last week when I was in the city ( New York ) I went into a Burger King to get a soda.
There was a guy hanging out around the lines asking for 38 cents....
I'm like what are you going to do with 38 cents ??

He said to get something to eat. Not for 38 cents ! but he did have somemore change in his hand.

Not saying he wasn't going to spend the money on food. I told him I would buy him a meal. Which I did.

I think I made his day, which was very cool with me.

Left the place feeling good about myself, but I quicky felt bad because I know there are millions more like him.

Transportation (subway tokens) or food, never money since it ends up being used for alcohol or other addictions.

i dropped off a bag full of blankets at a bypass where numerous people sleep and also gave a "sign" man a liter of absolute vodka as i was coming out of the windsor casino....................he put the sign away and took the day off.............:cocktail

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

I've given money and food....plus I donate a LOT of clothes to big sisters. And I donated all of my dog's belongings to homeless pups when he passed away...plus, I always left a hefty donation each time I had to spring my furry Houdini from the slammer. Sorry, I find animals more worthy of help than humans. I do know this: The next dumbass to follow me into my driveway and scares the shit out of me when I'm getting out of my car is going to get kicked in the junk. I don't care if you're needy...you DON'T approach a woman alone in a dark area. AOf course, this guys was far too well dressed to be homeless. Crackhead, I'm sure.

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

Our city recommends not giving the pan handlers money instead donate a food item or money to your local shelter. Since many are just looking for money for booze or some are con artists not really homeless

Re: Have you ever helped the homeless...

never give money, but I have given food many times.
I also give to food banks. I once gave my coat to a older lady that was walking in cold weather, and did not have a coat. All my pets were homeless before I adopted them . SG your right they need help too. They make the best pets as they are so grateful.
