Rosenthal reporting an Orioles fire sale. Anyone not named Machado, Jones, or Givens is available. Brach, O'Day, and apparently the Astros and Dodgers both interested in Britton according to Rosey. Here is an excerpt from his comments today:
Britton, earning $11.4 million, has one year of arbitration remaining before becoming a free agent. Brach, earning $3.05 million, also is under control for one more season. O’Day is in the second year of a four-year, $31 million deal under which he will earn $9 million in both 2018 and ’19.
The Dodgers and Astros are among the contenders intrigued by Britton, who has pitched four times after missing much of the first half with a strained left forearm. Brach, too, likely would be a hot commodity – he was an All-Star in 2016 and is enjoying a third straight excellent season.

As for Samardijza, he's had an odd season. I believe he's either first or second in the NL in K/BB ratio, and its the best ratio he's had since he became a starter. But the HR rate is way up (even comparably) and his strand rate is real low; around 65%. He's probably due to catch some better sequencing. But he's got a big contract, and I'm sure Sabean and Evans would not be sad to move either his or Cueto's contracts. The Giants could be headed for a massive rebuild job.

I saw some Houston fans say they would rather have Gerrit Cole than Jose Quintana.
No idea what Gerrit Cole they've been watching. He could get torched in the AL.
Fun Gerrit Cole stat... Between June 2nd and June 30th he made 6 starts. In 3 of them, he gave up 1 ER. In each of the other 3, he gave up 7 ER. That about sums him up.

Cubs still in on Avila. The problem is Contreras has raised his OPS from .687 on June 14th to .814 now. Probably one of the hotter hitters in the league. Would mean he'd play a lot of left, which curtails any possibility of Schwarber rebounding fully this year. Think they'd be better off getting another starter and some bullpen help in the 8th so that Uehara can be sent to mop up duty.

Let Schwarber play against righties and bench him vs lefties. His development has to take a back seat to winning games. I'd like to see them acquire Avila.

Now with Quintana and getting Hendricks back, that's going to save a lot of bullpen innings. Guys like Butler, Lackey and Montgomery giving them 4 innings a start has put a burden on the pen. I just don't think they need to add another bullpen guy.
The other solution for Schwarber (if they acquire Avila) is to send him back to Iowa until September 1. That way he'd play every day and see plenty of LH pitchers.

Avila can only hit righties though. So Contreras would be benched for righties or Schwarber would be benched for righties. Thus, the problem.

Avila will be the insurance policy. It's a potential disaster if they go into the playoffs without an experienced backup catcher.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Detroit Tigers for three prospects.
The Tigers will receive infield prospects Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King from Arizona. Lugo was the fourth-ranked prospect in the Diamondbacks' system, according to MLB.com.
