Billy Walters on Wikipedia, but not for sportsbetting. Surprisingly, for making a fortune on ROULETTE!

In 1982, several casinos in England began to lose large sums of money at their roulette tables to teams of gamblers from the USA. Upon investigation by the police, it was discovered they were using a legal system of biased wheel-section betting. As a result of this, the English roulette wheel manufacturer John Huxley manufactured a roulette wheel to counteract the problem.
The new wheel, designed by George Melas, was called "low profile" because the pockets had been drastically reduced in depth, and various other design modifications caused the ball to descend in a gradual approach to the pocket area. In 1986, when a professional gambling team headed by Billy Walters won $3.8 million using the system on an old wheel at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, every casino in the world took notice, and within one year had switched to the new low-profile wheel.

Thanks Newport. I just read a great article on him where he had staked Stu Unger $10k (a few years before his death) . He had a huge 1st place chip lead, but didn't come down for the next days tourney start as he was rushed to the hospital. Article said he got to the edge of placing in the money and it took 2 days for him to be ante'd out.

Thanks.

Is Chinaman the same one that was near the top of the list in the early 90s? I remember hearing about Chinaman plays and thought it was a joke, but Bob Scucci assured me Chinaman pushed steam which moved NBA totals 4 points in a blink of an eye. And that was back in the day when moving on air didn't happen all that much so it meant these plays were getting hit everywhere.

Was this always really a Chinese syndicate? I always thought it was sort of a misnomer to throw people off, like Stanford Wong.
I remember that about Wong, but as far as I know he is a syndicate.. he's been winning for a very longtime.........

Moving on air

The fucking dumbest thing a bookmaker can do and it shows they are not bookmakers on top of it.

Oh well most bookmakers were big time losing bettors and ended up realizing that it's better to take the losers money than to give theirs away.

And most of the best sports betters will never be known in public.

BW is not 1 of them. Not by a mile!

BW may not be the most talented sports bettor and may make a few more mistakes than others, but the guy's organization wins more money than anyone else and has been doing it over 20 years so that makes him #1. He's got a pretty wide room for error with what he has set up, no one else has access to the variety of numbers he does and that probably is the most important edge he gets.

I'm sure there is some guy out there betting $200/game who is as "talented" as the top 10, but because he either doesn't take it seriously or doubts his ability he will always just be an average Joe at this. Being a good bettor is but a small part of what makes someone the biggest winner and isn't winning the most money what this is all about?

1. He was lucky to be involved in the CG and after that most bookmakers were too scared of him to realize that they can beat him if they booked right.

2. If he was/is such a great handicapper, why does he need to hire HANDICAPPERS?

3. He is a big time manipulator and nothing more!

You people are too funny

and I could careless what you all believe as he sucks as a sports handicapper.

No this posting is too funny. Bill Gates probably could write some pretty good code back in the day, why did he hire coders at Microsoft? Warren Buffett can analyze stocks as well as anyone alive, why does he have a lot of stock analysts working for him? These employees probably do these things at a lesser level than the big boss, but they enable the big boss to leverage his time and capital, which is what BW does best.

The best bettors don't demand anything more than a winning edge and they bet it as strong as it merits. The guy with the highest winning percentage or ROI is never going to be found on a list like this.

Spanky is one of the nicest and most honest guys in this industry, but being strictly a scalper I am not sure he is even considered a Top 10 sports bettor. But believe me if you book him he will straighten out your line real fast. He also took a lot of big hits being to nice, especially from con man Lenny.

Kosher still around during bases, still winning, but not as big a deal as he used to be.

I would maybe have Ivey close to top 10 on that list as he has done real well last few years as a bettor.

There all also plenty of under the radar guys that as far as "sharpness" you can put right up there in the top 5.

Is Spanky mentioned here the same Spanky kicked out of William Hill in Monmouth Park last month?
