Now that I have finally calmed down over the ridiculous seedings and the rigged matchups that the committee drummed up this year, I have a few games that look pretty good.
Louisville finally got their act together in rolling through the big east tourney. However, this team has lacked an identity all season. Sure, they have suffered an inordinate number of injuries, but Pitino has tried about everything from his usual pressing all court game, to a variation of Asst. Ralph Willard"s match-up zone. They have unsuccessfully tried a motion offense. They are not a great outside shooting team. Yes, they did play well in winning the Big East tourney, but that may work against them, as their highly successful tourney, could lead to a bit of a subconscious let down. Should that occur, they are playing the wrong team. Extremely well coached Davidson, will be more than ready for anything Louisville throws at them. Yes when they stepped up in class, they were never in the game at home both against Vandy (they got it close late) and Wichita State. However, they did beat Kansas, in Kansas City, impressive, no doubt. They will be well prepared and confident. Louisville went out in ugly fashion last year. If they are not 100% ready, I know they should be, it is the NCAA tourney, but the subconscious is powerful. With last years loss in the back of their minds and the Big East win, fresh in their mind, this could be an implosion waiting to happen. Nothing would make me happier. Davidson plus 7.5 med plus.
Long Beach traveled all over America. 3 days after winning rather easily in Pittsburgh, they led very tough San Diego State the entire game, only to blow it late and lose in overtime. They then cooled off at the time red hot BOise and again 4 days later, did not score a field goal in the last 4 minutes in blowing another at very tough Montana. From there, they played louisville even til that last few minutes, made many runs at Kansas before losing by 8 and followed that by leading No Car by 5 at Chapel Hill. They eventually lost that onee 84-78 but you get the picture. They traveled to a very tough Creighton to blow another lead late. They then slaughtered senior dominated and well schooled UCSB to finally win their conference tourney. For that, this team with 4, 4 year starters, get a 12 seed. Bad luck for New Mexico, Although New Mexico had an incredible season, their resume is not as strong as The Beach. Long Beach has blown prior chances to get in the tourney. They broke through this year. I feel they will play with an extra edge, playing to make up for past failures. Long Beach is extremely talented, have been through the ringer and finally made it to the NCAA tourney. I sense energy from Long Beach that this overachieving Lobo crew, will not handle. Long Beach plus 4.5 med plus.
I also made a big bet on Harvard plus 6.5 and smaller bets on UNC ASHEVILLE plus 17. Loyola Md plus 17.5 Unlv minus 4.5, all of which the numbers are no longer. I know people are saying, Boston has lost it, betting on Tommy Amaker and Dave Rice, but the numbers were too good to resist. Good luck all. Fridays picks next.
