NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to make major sports betting announcement on Monday at 11 AM Eastern

This should be good. Bettman has been on record as being opposed to sports gambling in the past, but he's open-minded enough to see a good thing for the league too. I'm sure he demanded a nice chunk for the league.

ad revenue or more team sponsorship from fan duel, draft kings william hiss and the rest?
That would be my guess. Call one of them the Official Sportsbook of the NHL, whoever it is. Players can wear patches on their Jerseys, Center Ice can have a Logo.

Can someone explain this for me:

Having a direct relationship with an MGM gives us the ability to have more control over the types of bets that are being placed and how the data is being used.....

It's almost like no one covering this story could explain what it all means. Bettman, MGM and the league very vague in every article I read on this.

Funny, pro leagues think they have a proprietary hold on their data that's deciminated over public airwaves via pay or free.

Credit to Bettman, he sold nothing for something. It's non exclusive, so MGM basically bought the right to put up NHL live betting props. The only advantage they have is they will have the data from the NHL directly, rather than a 3rd party like STATS Inc or Sport Radar.. They also get to use the NHL logo. Major announcement indeed.

Elliot Friedman explained things before the Leaf game tonight pretty well. Talked about the data being what sounds like much more lucrative than the leagues cut from any bets made. Very surprising to me. I know the NHL handle is small but had no idea the data was that valuable. And all that income from the data is part of the HRR [Hockey Related Renenue] that will cause the cap to go up. Win-win. Bettman with another home run.

If you are making baseball analogies, this is no more than a bunt single, not even close to a home run. The NBA deal with MGM is 25mil per season and this deal, although amounts are not disclosed, is expected to be a fraction of that. Let's be generous and assume it is 60% of that. That would put it at 15 mil. 50/50 for HRR between owners and players and you're looking at 7.5 mil in players revenue. Divide that by 31 teams (soon to be 32 when Seattle joins in) and you're looking at a massive salary cap increase of less than a quarter mil per team per season, unless there are any expenses the NHL incurs from those 15mil. Like R&D costs to actually come up with what they selling, the stuff they tested during the World Cup plus more. Home run you say.....

Love to see Bettman flip flop his stance on gambling as the wind of opportunity blows.

A bookmaker paying for inside information?

I doubt they would even know how to use in information. I mean in the end they have to post the same lines any way.

They say the NHL isn't making a dollar from the deal. Probably the only way the deal got made.

I say the info they do get is useless anyway.

No, I'm not making baseball analogies. you are though. No idea why. Bettman stole your game and you'll never get over it. Wash, rinse, repeat. We get it already. Like your last post stated, he got something for nothing from MGM. Lol. the NHL will never put up numbers the NBA or any of the other leagues do. No league president can come close to the way he has grown revenue and the game like he has. Its been at the expense of Canada and you’ll never see that or get over it.

Brian Burke made the same flip-flop stance on gambling as Bettman did. Again, this deal had little to do with gambling itself and more to do with the selling of data. Fuck, Burkes an American too. Sorry, bad example.

Bettman with another home run.

I guess that's not a baseball analogy, I must still have baseball stuck on my mind after the 18 innings game.

I gave Bettman credit, he got something for nothing, but it's not even gonna be a significant factor when the cap numbers are factored in as I just showed you the math. I didn't say they should get close to what NBA got. You should revisit the NBA thread when they made the deal with MGM to see where I stood there.

He never stole anything from me aside from the lockout seasons.

This is a flip flop of Trumpish proportions:

"It is my judgment that in terms of what we try to create, what we want to present, the atmosphere that we want people to feel part of, is inconsistent with sports betting," Bettman said in a deposition in 2012 litigation of the New Jersey sports betting case. Bettman expressed concern on how widespread sports gambling could impact the integrity of the game. The NHL also formally opposed a bill in Canada that sought to give provinces the option of legalizing single-game betting.

Brian Burke is a crusty old man. He took issue with Hamilton "flossing" and Canes' celebrations, needs to be put out to pasture, way past his expiration date.

What data is worth anything besides injuries? And that might be illegal.

And how exactly is the MGM going to use this data?

I would love to see MGM management talk about what data is going to help them book bets. That would be hilarious.

If they used any data to post their own lines they would be gambling. I doubt that will ever happen.

So what good is any data they get from the NHL going to help them? I doubt anyone there would even know what to do with even injury information.

This is a joke right?
