Republicans seek to terminate bargaining rights for Wisconsin public employees

A new proposal by Republican state legislators and the governor would terminate bargaining rights for most Wisconsin public employees, including teachers and other non emergency workers. There would also be statutory benefit reductions. The Democrats are trying to prevent this from taking place.

This is what happens when you vote Republican - the republican elite and corporations will ally to ensure that everyone makes minimum wage and no benefits. 2938u4ji23

They should be able to always keep their bargaining rights. That I do not agree with.
On the other hand all he is asking for is the teachers and all the other state workers is to put in 5.8% in their pensions and 12.6% for their health care premiums. That comes out to about $200 a month.I am tired of everyone else having to give in and give up something in these tough times while the teachers continue to get a 3% raise every year and only work for 9 months out of the year.Of course he will not make any of the politicians give up a dime but like you said, they want everyone making minimum wage while they continue to live like Kings.

agree with tank, also add, the system is full of fat, meaning jobs that do not directly impact teaching, but they-the unions want you to think it is all about that

The historical illiteracy of Wisconsin teachers; Update: Crosshairs, ?Reload?

Godwin?s Law states that any political argument, carried on long enough, will eventually provoke a Nazi reference. My own personal corollary to Godwin?s Law is that the first side to invoke it invariably loses, mainly because Nazis and Adolf Hitler are simply not analogous to normal politics in American democracy, unless one is discussing actual neo-Nazis. It exposes a clear lack of historical literacy about the Nazis and the history between the two World Wars of the last century. It?s the kind of argument favored by the relatively uneducated.

That?s what makes the protests in Wisconsin over Governor Scott Walker?s proposal to curtail the power of public-sector unions so deliciously ironic. Hot Air reader Tim R in Madison took his camera with him when he attended the large protests staged by the teachers against the budget bill that would require contributions for pensions and health insurance, as well as put new curbs on collective bargaining. Tim discovered signs like this at the protest yesterday at 6 pm just after the speakers concluded:

This is one of the milder examples, although it?s worth noting that teachers brought their students with them to the protest. I wonder if the same teacher holding this sign would discipline a student who wrote something similar on a chalkboard, with or without the underscores.

This seems to be a theme at the protests:

Er, Hitler? Why Hitler, of all possible comparisons? One of her colleagues helpfully held a sign to explain it:

First, Walker hasn?t ?outlowed? unions, or even proposed outlawing them, either. Walker?s proposal would restrict negotiations with non-law-enforcement unions to wages only, and would require recertification votes each year. It would also make Wisconsin a right-to-work state, ending automatic deduction of union dues from paychecks and instead make them voluntary. That may put unions in a tough position to justify their continued representation, but it hardly outlaws the unions.

Besides, even if it did, it?s a fallacious argument. Hitler was also a vegetarian who owned a dog. Are all vegetarians Nazis? All dog owners?

The Nazis aren?t history?s great villains because Hitler opposed public-sector unions. To equate that with Naziism isn?t just reprehensible, it?s downright ignorant and minimizes the actual horrors of Naziism.

That doesn?t stop Wisconsin educators from expanding on their theme:

What do you get when you cross Hosni Mubarak and Adolf Hitler? One ugly baby, that?s for sure, but not Scott Walker. Again, this appears to be a recurring theme in this teachers? protest. (Also, it looks like anti-smoking efforts have been for naught in the classroom.)

But while we?re noticing just how poorly Wisconsin teachers do at history, it looks as though some of them might have problems with the present:

?Impeach Bush?? Maybe it?s a leftover sign from a few years ago. The Anchoress points out another sign at a different locale which reads ?I AM THE FUTURE ? I NEEN QUALITY TEACHERS.? From what we?ve seen of these protests, the entire state of Wisconsin is in need of quality teachers, and it looks like the union is the biggest impediment to getting them.

Meanwhile, Democrats in the Wisconsin Senate have gone AWOL in an attempt to avoid casting a vote on the bill:
A three-day-long stand-off at the Wisconsin state capitol between union supporters and those backing the Republican governor?s budget cuts just went to another level Thursday as Democratic senators apparently fled the state to prevent a vote on Gov. Scott Walker?s budget-repair bill, which would cut public employee union collective bargaining rights and require them to contribute to pensions and health care.

Law enforcement has been sent to find missing Democratic lawmakers, according to a Madison, Wis. ABC affiliate. State Sen. leader Scott Fitzgerald said only one Democrat is needed for quorum to vote on the controversial bill, which is expected to pass a Republican-majority Senate. The ?Sergeant of Arms is going door to door to find Democratic senators.?

The budget-repair bill passed a finance committee 12-4 late last night, its last hurdle before a Senate vote, on party lines convincing Senate Democrats that moderate Republicans would not deliver them an upset victory over the Gov. Scott Walker.
They have to come home eventually, and they can?t avoid their responsibilities forever.

Update: Via Ann Althouse and Instapundit, isn?t this the kind of rhetoric the Left claimed was exclusive to the Right?

You are in the minority. The American people don't want public sector unions stealing their tax dollars and undermining their children's education. This is what the people of Wisconsin voted for and is only the beginning of what is to come -- just as I predicted would happen.

Re: Republicans seek to terminate bargaining rights for Wisconsin public employees

My opinion: junk public education altogether. Close every public school in the nation and let these thugs protest their asses off while the rest of us go about rebuilding the Last Bastion of Freedom.

These Cairo-like protests were financed by tax dollars - outrageous! :soapbox:

How many government failures do people need to see before admitting everything 'progressives' touch turns to crap?

He goes after them right at the beginning, then circles back around at about 5:00. Frankly, I wish he’d have been harder on them. There would have been some risk in that, as an angry response would signal to some that the runaway tactic has him worried, but I’ll bet there are enough voters out there who are aghast at the sight of Democrats literally running away from their budget problems that a little righteous indignation would have been welcome. As it is, he took the cool-calm-composed “leader in command” route. Always a safe play, although not one that’s channeling the base’s passion on this.

Two clips here, one of Walker and the other of another Republican who once had to hang tough with unions. Compare and contrast. Oh, by the way, have I mentioned that Obama’s online DNC operation is helping to coordinate the protests in Wisconsin? In case you were unclear on how high the stakes are here and what this means for other states eyeing “corrective measures” for their own budgets, that should bring it into focus. A quote from John Boehner: “I’m disappointed that instead of providing similar leadership from the White House, the president has chosen to attack leaders such as Gov. Walker, who are listening to the people and confronting problems that have been neglected for years at the expense of jobs and economic growth. I urge the president to order the DNC to suspend these tactics.”

Update: Via Big Government, an encounter in Rockford. The guy says he’s leaving to go do his job in Wisconsin. Does that mean they’re coming home?

Re: Republicans seek to terminate bargaining rights for Wisconsin public employees

The sheep who vote for these Republicans don't see that Bush was the one who destroyed the country and led to high taxation through the trillions wasted on wars and bailouts. Not to mention how he allowed so much outsourcing and deregulation so as to destroy jobs. I don't new see Republicans actively campaigning to end wars and bailouts. All they care about are cutbacks for teachers making 40k. The corprorate media contributes to the entire atmosphere and influences the sheep. Many of these sheep voters will vote themselves into minimum wage jobs - unless you are the very high level corporate elite, Republicans will only hurt you.

Yes all it does is give the union a black eye. Just like they did at GM. At GM they refused the 2 tier wage system and employees paying for any of their health care costs and it bankrupted the company. Now since the new contract they have a 2 tier wage system but it is too late for all the new hires to have a pension since the union took a hard line stand before this new contract. They bring this shit on themselves. How do you think a new hire feels working next to a guy doing the same thing making half as much money with no pension? These are new union members and they are the ones saying the Hell with unions because of what the unions have done to them.
The only fight they have in Wisconsin is to keep their bargaining rights but they are going to be paying for their health care and more of their pensions.Maybe they will get smart and realize this but I doubt it.What I find comical is that the police and firefighters are exempt and they are the ones who supported Walker.Sounds like good old fashioned politics and payback to the firefighters and police.Imagine that ....unions supporting a Republican and getting rewarded.Funny as Hell that they used the Democrats playbook to beat them at their own game.:LMAO

It's nice to see that the Democrats are finally standing up to the Republicans and willing to protect workers' rights.

Public opinion is over 60% against the Republicans on this issue. Maybe it will give the Democrats an opportunity to regain credibility and take back some of these seats next time, especially once voters realize that putting in Republicans will only make things worse.

What progressives call "workers' rights" has never been anything more than a political power grab, and as we all know, power corrupts.

Public unions are a 50 year mistake which now threaten to take down the entire country. 2938u4ji23

Romney and Pawlenty are now supporting the Wisconsin governor's position.

As disappointing as Obama is, be careful what you wish for in 2012. The Republicans caused destruction for many outside of the Wall Street elites from 2000-2008; if you give them another chance, they will finish the job. Almost everyone would either be a Wall Street elite, outsourced, or making minimum wage.

At this time I can guarantee you that I will be voting for Obama in 2012.

What you never hear about is the toxic derivatives that Wall Street talked the states into investing in and the states lost their pension fund money over.
Governor Kasich from Ohio use to be high up at Lehmen Brothers and had the state invest in these toxic funds for their pensions and now that this is all coming out you notice that Kasich is backing down and wants the story to die. When people realize what the Koch brothers and their minions are doing you will finally see more backlash.Loved how Walker got punked out by that liberal blogger that was acting like Koch on the phone and Walker admitted that it has nothing to do with the budget.

The bill just passed in the WI Assembly and Gov. Chris Christie has never been more popular. Ditto for Kasich. Detroit is firing half their teachers and several other states are preparing for war against these overpaid, underperforming thugs.

Yeah, I can see how following through on their campaign promises is gonna hurt Republicans. :3dfesses:

As I have been saying for months, unions are good for unions. Everyone else suffers. The American people aren't buying the bullshit anymore.

Instead of "collective bargaining" why don't they just call it COLLECTIVE BULLYING because that's exactly what it is.

REVOLT!: STATES LEAD THE WAY

http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/revolt-states-lead-the-way/February 25, 2011

As predicted in Revolt! (Dick’s and Eileen’s new book) – States Lead the Way Toward Reform

It is not only the Arab world that is in turmoil! Reform Governors like Scott Walker (Wisconsin), John Kasich (Ohio), Mitch Daniels (Indiana), Tom Corbett (Pennsylvania), Butch Otter (Idaho), and Rick Scott (Florida) are leading a movement for fundamental change in America.

In Revolt!, Morris and McGann’s new book, they describe how newly elected Republican Governors – impelled by their budget crises and empowered with GOP Legislatures – will accomplish sweeping changes in our politics.

Read how:

* Republican Governors will destroy the political base of the Democratic Party by ending automatic dues deductions from paychecks by unions.

* GOP Legislatures will strip teachers of tenure, end seniority based pay, enact merit pay, and promote school choice, dramatically eroding the power of the teachers’ unions.

* Collective bargaining reforms will free school boards and principals to run their schools and end union control.

* State fiscal problems will force them into bankruptcy. And, in bankruptcy, they can cancel all union contracts.

For all the changes coming in Washington, the Tea Party revolution’s most important changes will be at the state level. Good-bye AFT, SEIU, AFSME, NEA!

Ever since unions "community organized" and took over the public education system by electing politicians to do their bidding at the expense of taxpayers and our kids, education has gone to crap. I know, I'm just as shocked as you are, because progressives are always bragging how their good intentions can turn water to wine.

But seriously, folks, the stats don't lie: Kids no longer read and write, add or subtract (unless they're home schooled) because these self-serving thugs are too busy indoctrinating them with their Big Government agenda, and along with it, every leftist pet project and useless skill like 'self-esteem building', 'multicultural sensitivity', the militant sodomite agenda, and so on...

Now that the majority of Americans are awakening to this multi-decade scam and becoming involved electing politicians to clean up this criminal mess, what does the left do? Places prank calls to a governor's office trying to play 'gotcha.' Attack the messenger, not the message -- classic Alinsky.

But...but...but... I thought the left prides itself on rational intellectual discourse? Yeah, and the Kenyan is going to call presser tomorrow and show the world his authentic American birth certificate. :btj:

So let me get this straight. It is the teachers fault if a student does not want to learn??Are you saying it is the teachers job to play mom or dad to all these kids???This is classic Fascism .Personal responsibility!!!!!!!!!!!!Do you even know what that is???????????Evidently not or you would not be spewing this garbage.
They have already agreed to pay for their insurance and pension so what more do you want??Seriously????Where is your usual rant about uneducated at??Oh that's right they all have degrees so that blows that silly rant away. Now is it just because they are lazy or what kind of Fascist spin can you put on it??Maybe you should decide what they make??Fascism!!Maybe you can get back to your free market line to determine what they should make but that would go against your Fascist preaching wouldn't it?
So which is it Joe ...Fascism that you should decide or let the school boards that was elected decide??
Personally like I have said I have no sympathy for them since they are the only employees I know of that get a 3% raise every year while my taxes go up but they have made concessions and Walker should claim his victory and move on , but he is going for a union bust that is not going to end well for him if he keeps pushing.Take the victory and move on it's that simple.

Nope, union busting is the only permanent solution, but the governor isn't even proposing that. He's just getting the government and employers out of the dues collection business. I mean, how dare these goons FORCE the government (in this case, taxpayers) to collect their membership dues! How does this in any way benefit the taxpayer or children? It doesn't. Hmmm...maybe if unions have to collect their own dues, people will be less likely to join unions. Couldn't be that could it, tank?

The only permanent solution is to strip away their collective bargaining rights...otherwise they'll get back their 'concessions' and then some from the next bought-and-paid-for weasel elected to office.

Elections have consequences.

If they do not want to pay dues then they can become core members and only pay a fraction. If Walker is so concerned about the budget why did he give 137 million dollars in tax breaks to the corporations then??Now he wants the teachers to pay for it??Bullshit!!!Walker is a Fascist pig that will be a one term Governor but hey ..he has the Koch brothers to give him a job when he is done doesn't he??Probably at the power plant that he is giving them with a no bid contract.

It was Nazi Germany (savor that irony) which first introduced the idea of GOVERNMENT education (stop calling it "public education", they're progressive government propaganda mills), because as Hitler said, you gotta get'em while their young. Hitler, master propagandist he was, understood full well the young are the most susceptible to half-baked ideas and movements. No surprise that progressive demagogues like Al Gore boast openly about this "special bond" they share with smaller humans 1/3rd their age and 1/5th of their life experience. That's right, Big Al...you tell us stupid adults. Young people are so much wiser compared to their clueless parents. Why, today's youth actually care about, ya know..."saving the planet" and stuff, frown on capitalism, while listening to an imbecile like you on their ipods!

Newsflash: Every single stupid idea and backward political movement throughout history preyed on the young -- fact. That's all you need to know about ANY grown adult who has a creepy fascination with "young people", and obviously I don't mean sexually, I'm talking about this insatiable ambition many progressives have of conquering young, innocent minds. It's sick.

Now, as your humble esteemed 'fascist', here's what I stand for: P-R-I-V-A-T-E EDUCATION. I want the government completely out of the education business, and I will tell you why.

First, unlike power-hungry progressives and their little voices telling them to "mold our children's future", I want no C-O-N-T-R-O-L over anyone's minds or future. I want parents to decide what their children learn and are exposed to, not radical Big Government ideologues these positions tend to attract. I want parents to be able to pull their kids out of school, with consequences, if say a teacher happens to be behaving like a quack indoctrinating his/her students with the left's familiar anti-American revisionist crap, or just plain sucks at teaching. This weeds out the bad teachers. If enough parents yank their kids from the classroom, a teacher will be fired on the spot, or the school will go out of business. Obviously, I don't want unions and their army of bureaucrats protecting bad teachers because that's what the current system does, which everyone agrees is kaput. Remember, it's for the children, right lefties? This means good teachers will make the big money and the bad teachers will be enrolling in their local truck driving school. That's life. That's reality.

Second, I want school curricula to compete in the free market place. This means no more men in black robes deciding what it is allowed in the classroom and what isn't. Different schools can bring in different innovative ideas, values and new learning techniques, because the parents will decide, which means the marketplace will naturally gravitate toward what works best. No more agendas. No more demagoguery and polarization. No more cookie cutter "solutions" imposed upon a diverse population. What's good for one student isn't necessary going to work for another. Too many kids are falling through the cracks because "the system" is teaching them what to think, believe and how to behave, rather than how to think critically and analytically, allowing them to make up their own minds.

This is how a society makes real progress. This is how America can once again be the beacon of liberty, providing our children the best opportunity to become tomorrow's best doctors, scientists and business people. We do this by breaking the bureaucratic stranglehold the left has on our education system which is currently destroying young minds with stale, half-baked nonsense. In a free society, the best ideas always triumph over the bad ones and no system is more freer or democratic than capitalism which allows every individual parent to decide their children's education.

On the other hand, in an isolated protected environment (the kind that favors school administrators and the current crop of complacent, lazy fat-cat self-interested unionized teachers) bad ideas don't go away. On the contrary: they become ingrained within the culture and passed on from one generation to the next, while individual parents are powerless to stop it. There's not a whole lot they can other than enroll their child in a private school or home school (no surprise progressives want this banned as well!) assuming they can afford it. Why doesn't the Kenyan enroll his children in a public school? Hmmm....

I can understand why progressives are making a strong stand on "public education". Government indoctrination is the crown jewel of their crumbling empire, much like it was for Hitler's Nazi Germany. Lose the young and the progressive experiment is over, and good riddance! :+waving-5

I have news for the left: the people are wide awake and want fresh new, bold ideas. They don't know exactly what the problems are or how to fix them, but they do sense something is terribly wrong. The old entrenched, Soviet-style centralized system has failed them. The economy is in toilet, and people are being lectured by progressive elites that they must learn to live with less, while America's best days are behind us.

Here are some soothing words of wisdom from a truly great American president:

"The lesson of all this was, of course, that because we're a great nation, our challenges seem complex. It will always be this way. But as long as we remember our first principles and believe in ourselves, the future will always be ours."

Those first principles President Reagan spoke of must -- MUST -- always point toward freedom. If your compass is not pointing toward freedom, then you don't believe in America's first principles...you believe in something else, distinctly foreign the revolutionary founders.

And so, onward we march with Gov Walker and the other "freedom soldiers" ready and willing to confront and defeat the professional smear merchants and entrenched enemies who fight real "hope and change".

You Might Be A Public School Teacher in Wisconsin [or Indiana ] IF :

10.) You take a week off to protest in Wisconsin and your office runs better.

9.) On a snow day when they say “non-essential” people should stay home you know who they mean.

8.) You get paid twice as much as a private sector person doing the same job but make up the difference by doing half as much work.

7.) It takes longer to fire you than the average killer spends on death row.

6.) The worse you do your job, the more your boss avoids you.

5.) You think the French are working themselves to death.

4.) You know by having a copy of the Holy Koran on your desk your job is 100% safe.

3.) You spend more time at protest marches than at church.

2.) You have a Democratic congressman’s lips permanently attached to your ass.

1.) You pay more in union dues than you do for your healthcare insurance.

You forgot to mention in your rewriting of history about Germany how they took away choices and got rid of everyone who did not go along with it.Sounds like you now!!What a strange twist !!
You evidently have no idea how a school runs but keep blaming the teachers while the elected school board officials keep making the decisions okay??Is that sinking in any for you??Get a clue and come back with more then your usual, it's the teachers fault, it's the greedy teachers fault, blame progressives for all the problems, blame the sun, blah, blah, blah. All you have is blame without even knowing where to place it at.Get a clue for shit sakes.

Re: Republicans seek to terminate bargaining rights for Wisconsin public employees

What idiot came up with these stupid quip's?Only a retard would buy this shit!!

Walker gives 24-hour deadline to fleebaggers

posted at 1:36 pm on February 28, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

If the Wisconsin state Senators who fled the state intended on highlighting their opposition to Scott Walker?s budget-repair bill, then the governor offered his congratulations on their success. In his statement this morning, though, Walker also told the fleebaggers that any further delay would cost the state $165 million in a lost opportunity to restructure the state?s debt ? and that continued delay will force Walker to cut jobs to save money:
?According to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, if Senate Democrats refuse to return to Wisconsin and cast their vote the next day the option to refinance a portion of the state?s debt will be off the table,? the statement says.

In addition, Cullen Werwie, the governor?s spokesman, said in a statement: ?Senate Democrats claimed they fled the state to slow down the process so the public had enough time to learn about the budget repair bill. If that was their true intention, they have been successful.

?Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year. Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future.?

Werwie said he was giving the Democrats 24-hour notice. He added that the governor will delay sending out layoff notices ?as long as possible.?
With Walker raising the stakes, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel provided its readers with the context of spending on public employees:
But by any measure, as Walker has noted and most state employees acknowledge, the state will continue to provide rich health-insurance benefits compared with the private sector, where nearly 40% of employers don?t offer health benefits at all.

Under Walker?s bill, state employees ? including elected state legislators, who receive the same benefits ? would pay about $600 more for single coverage, raising their share of that cost to about $1,000 a year. For family coverage, they would pay $1,476 more, raising their share of the cost to about $2,500 a year.

The proposal would increase their share of the premium to 12.4%. But that would still be well below the share paid by employees in the private sector, who by one estimate pay an average of 19% of the cost for single coverage and 29% for family coverage.

It also is less than the 28% of the premium paid on average by federal employees.
The union has accepted these changes in principle, now that Walker has pushed his budget-repair bill with collective-bargaining reform built into it, as Walker promised during the election. The PEUs would rather accept cuts in the near term than the ability to browbeat the state and localities in later negotiations. However, these are the very same financial changes that unions characterized as ? well ?
?We certainly aren?t the haves, in spite of what he says. I just see this as all political posturing,? said Marty Beil.
Beil is executive director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union , which represents 22,000 state workers in various departments including corrections, universities, mental health, and social work.

?It?s like the plantation owner talking to the slaves. We?ve moved in Walker?s mentality from public service to public servitude,? Beil explained to FOX 11. When asked ?Do you really think comparison to plantation owner and slave is accurate?? Beil replied: ?I do. I really do because here he sits as the incoming governor, basically issuing mandates about what he wants to happen. Governors and employers don?t do that especially in the modern era of labor relations. We sit down at a table to talk about things.?
The police reversed course yet again today and finally closed the state capitol building to visitors, ending the protests inside:
The state Department of Administration tightened rules on access to the statehouse Monday morning after deciding the night before not to force out hundreds of demonstrators who were camped out in the rotunda. Some of those protesters from the weekend are still in the building.

Protesters lined up outside the King St. entrance to the Capitol Monday morning, waiting to be let in, while others began to march around the building.

?We are going to let people in in a measured way, but we have to get this building cleaned up,? Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch said Monday.

On Tuesday, Gov. Scott Walker will deliver his budget address in the state Capitol?s Assembly chambers to a joint session of the Legislature and the Walker administration said Monday that part of the restrictions on public access were in preparation for that.
Walker addresses a joint session of the legislature tomorrow night, in what will surely be showdown moment between himself and the fleebaggers. If they don?t send someone to provide a quorum at that point, Walker will almost certainly announce layoffs and blame them on Democrats who won?t participate as a minority, but instead insist on dictating to the majority. Unfortunately for everyone, there seems to be no way for fleebaggers to save face at this point. Walker is obviously not retreating from his position ? and since he has the votes necessary to pass the bill, he doesn?t have to retreat.

Eventually, the absent Senators will have to return or possibly end up forfeiting their seats in the legislature. Walker has until the end of June to pass a budget, and it?s difficult to see how the fleebaggers can justify their continued obstinacy, or how they can justify returning after the layoffs and higher debt payments have already occurred. They?d do less damage to themselves now by returning today and declaring a public-relations victory.

Yes let's give up collective bargaining and let a Fascist tyrant like Walker tell us what is best for everyone.Worked for Hitler for awhile but thank God the good people of Wisconsin are not as dumb as Walker thinks.Keep threatening and blame someone else like all Fascist Tyrants do Scotty.
