Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Its always interesting to see how a trainer manages a top contender thru the Derby prep trials. There are different schools of thought as to what approach is best but obviously no magic formula. Im hoping for a strong field this year and pray that injuries dont become an issue for a change.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Big day of Derby preps as several contenders are racing.

Key races are the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream and the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. The John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway, while not graded, will also feature some top horses.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Feb. 28: 1 Mile, Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes, Gulfstream Park ($250,000)
gulfstreampark.com

This race has been diminished with a $100,000 purse cut. And whether it's a good idea or not, it won't be run at 1 1/8 mile this year. Instead, it'll go at Gulfstream's one-turn mile distance, reducing its importance in the eyes of many.

Feb. 28: 1 1/8 Mile, Grade III Sham Stakes, Santa Anita ($200,000)

California's progression of 3-year-old races used to make little sense, but it's been better since the Sham was moved later in the year. This race, which has always been at 1 1/8 mile, was first run in 2001.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Looks like there may be a filly in the mix as well:

Stardom Bound Wins Santa Anita Oaks with Eight-Wide Run. In the closest of finishes with noses on the wire, Stardom Bound gutted out a win over 35-1 Third Dawn and several others on top of the finish line in the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks.

Bridge jumpers had more than a few anxious moments waiting for the photo after $420,341 of the $508,192 show pool was wagered on the nation's top 3-year-old filly. Stardom Bound opened up the wagering at 1-9 but eventually reached 2-5, her morning line.

Stardom Bound paid $2.80 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. She was timed in 1:43.62 for the 1 1/16 mile.

As expected, Mike Smith took Stardom Bound to the rear of the nine-filly field. She was several lengths off the lead as the field started up the backstretch, but she moved up to about four off the pace going into the second turn.

With many in the field running big races inside her, Stardom Bound had nowhere to go but outside as the field straightened up for home. That resulted in a cavalry charge to the wire that began, despite a chart call of six wide, with Stardom Bound appearing to be eight wide at the top of the stretch. While horses bumped and jostled inside her, Mike Smith gave Stardom Bound strong urging, and she finally got up by a nose for the win in the last jump.

Hooh Why (12-1), who was prominent in the early running, was third, a nose back of Third Dawn, followed neck by Nan (30-1).

Asked whether Stardom Bound would go on to the Santa Anita Oaks, Michael Iavarone of owner IEAH Stables said, "I think she worked pretty hard against girls, so she's going to have to prove herself to go against horses like Pioneerof the Nile."

?It seemed like she got lost out there early. We had a terrible trip," Smith said. "When I moved out with her turning for home, everybody else went out at the same time and we got caught really wide. From the sixteenth pole home, I thought we could grind ?em down, but I was worried. At the wire though, she put her ears up and she was playing with the pony coming back. Maybe this is the kind of race she needed. I guess you could say it was a not-so-heady ride.?

Prior to the race, trainer Bobby Frankel said Stardom Bound was more fit for this race than she was for the Las Virgenes Stakes: ?She had to be. She only ran 10 lengths farther than anybody else in the race," the trainer said.

The Oaks carries a purse of $300,000, and the winner's share of $180,000 increased Stardom Bound's graded earnings to $1,770,000.

Stardom Bound, a daughter of Tapit, was bred in Kentucky by Fletcher Gray, Carolyn Gray and John Youngblood. She was produced by My White Corvette, a daughter of Tarr Road.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Thanks Ned. Didn't realize Pool 2 was this weekend. Pamplemousse with the dramatic drop. Gotta think the field still has pretty good value at this point as well.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Not much value on that board... at all. If I'm taking a pre-wager like that, I want 20 and 30/1 on the favorites.. so much can happen between now and then.

I Want Revenge shit on that Gotham group BTW...

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

I'd take 8-1 on the field right now in a heartbeat. That has got to be bet down to at least 4 or 5 this week.

Good to see a few horse guys in here. All comments are welcome.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

No he didnt.. not really. He broke poor, moved up atletically into midpack while the pace was fast... He flattened out into the lane, and was not ridden out the remainder. Matz is around 3% winners with first out horses.. He will likely be best on turf, but it is way too early to write him off.

Just a note: The great Champion Cigar got run off his feet by more than 15 lengths his first start.. He turned out to be OK.

It took Real Quiet at least 5 or 6 races to break his maiden.. I could really go on and on..

If you watched the race, visually you can see this horse has natural talent.. he pulled himself up easily to the pack and was asking Prado to let him go.. when Prado did, he was empty.. so, now they will take him back and educate him, probably run him on turf the next out.. I expect a massive improvement from what he did Saturday.. Planning on him to be Barbaro is just unfair. :thumbsup

I MUST BE A GODDAMNED PSYCHIC... The full to Barbaro ran again, and he ran a terrific 2nd to an excellent More than Ready Colt trained by Eddie Kenneally.... IMO both of these two, with a little health luck, have chances to jump into the Triple Crown discussion.. Both have obvious talent, and blood. More Than Ready may be stretching it to ask for a Classic Distance, but this horse can run. So can Nicanor :thumbsup

The best performances Ive seen thus far are the 2 by the Pampelmousse, all of Old Fashioned races, and that Gotham runaway by the Mullins colt. Also, the Dunkirk maiden and Alw races were awesome. But, all 4 of these horses were far too low.. Right now, if all 4 of these horses make the Derby, two of the four will likely be over 10/1.. the other two will likely be 4-1-7/1.... So 10/1 is dipshit money for right now.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Yes, watched the YouTube replays. I'd love to hear "The Mousse is loose" going down the homestretch at Churchill. Horse has looked damn good in all three races I saw.
Long way to go and Cali horses have a history of underperforming. He has my heart, if not a bit of my wallet, right now.

:thumbsupBBYHILL,
Have not watched that replay yet. If you can find it on youtube, feel free to embed here for us.

A friend and I were at the track the day he won the Sham.. We both visually noticed that the horse was walking slowly and looked exhausted, although Solis didnt seem concerned.. The horse is clearly a specimen and pure talent, but his distance limitations are open for debate while examining his pedigree.

Add to that, Saturday morning I was listening to DRF's Jay Privman who was in the winner's circle after the Sham, and he said The Pamplemousse was woofing. Exhausted so much that Privman, who knows what he is talking about (a least on obvious observations), thought the horse might "tie up".... which is of course a nightmare. But, he said they got him out of the circle, and he seem to exit out OK..

My point is, as fast as the Pamplemousse did run (and he rolled at some honest enough fractions), it was kind of suprising to see him that tired, especially with the lack of pace pressure he got.. he was basically left to run alone. The race was a beaut, but I wonder if a dominate creature beat a weak field running past a distance he truly wants. And remember, he has to run an extra furlong in the Derby, and possibly 3 extra furlongs in the Belmont..... Dicey for me....even though I'm attached to the horse.. I know if he isnt a true Classic Distance horse Julio will find the distance and surface for him to accel. The horse is full of ability.

Great info and good to know. Appreciated and will definitely take it under advisement as I'm not attached to any horse right now. Loved the way he ran but will keep this under consideration.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Is Take the Points going to run in the Derby?

He just earned several points for his second in the Sham.. so, he may be on his way. It's a process that won't sort itself out until the weekend of The Arkansas Derby, The Bluegrass, the wood, and the SA Derby.. Then the picture will become more clear.

Meant the Kentucky.

Obviously there is lots to be figured out and if you want an inside track on the Triple Crown now is the time to be hanging out at the OTB:cheers

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Big weekend coming up, several big races that may determine some of the contenders and pretenders.
