Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Capt.CandymanCan won the grade 2 Hutcheson on Friday.

Article courtesy of Gulfstream Park/TheDowneyProfile:

Capt. Candyman Can Do in Hutcheson

Posted Jan. 30, 2008

A nice ride by Julien Leparoux helped Capt. Candyman Can capture the seven-furlong, Grade II Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

After being eased back to the inside of an early pace duel between an unexpectedly forward Hello Broadway and Rocketing Returns, Leparoux swung Capt. Candyman Can to the outside near the quarter pole and powered on to score by 1 1/2 length over Hello Broadway.

The winner was timed in 1:23.69 over a track that was not especially glib. Early fractions were :23.76 and :46.14. Frolic?s Dream finished in 1:24:15 two races earlier in the Grade II Forward Gal Stakes for fillies at the same distance.

It was the third win in five starts for the Ian Wilkes trainee, and the victory marked the fourth of the afternoon for Leparoux. Capt. Candyman Can paid $7.40 to win as the third choice in the field of six. Hello Broadway was the 2-1 favorite.

Bee Cee Cee, at 35-1 odds, rallied late for third, 4 1/2 lengths behind the runner-up. Salo Jak finished another head back in fourth. Second choice Break Water Edison, who broke from post 1, was reserved early in fourth, went four wide around the second turn, and slowed to finish last of six.

Joseph Rausch and David Zell own the 3-year-old out of Stormy Way, by Storm Creek. Captain Candyman Can was bred in Kentucky by Rausch, Zell and Lantern Hill Farm LLC.

Capt. Candyman Can made his first start since a close-up third-place finish in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29.

?He was very good today," Leparoux said. "I was able to back him off and take him to the outside. It wasn?t a problem. I wanted to keep him in the clear from there. There were no excuses today."

"A lot can happen between now and May. We still have a lot to do. The big difference today was he listened. His last race, he went to the front and wouldn?t listen. Today, he was good,? Leparoux said.

Aside from a win, Wilkes got what he wanted out of the race. ?All we were looking for from him today was to relax. We?ve been teaching him to in the mornings, but until they do it in the afternoon you don?t know whether they get it. Julien was able to get him back out of there, and he came on from there. The second horse ran a great race, too, and never gave up. We?ll talk it over with the owners, but the Fountain of Youth Stakes would certainly be logical.?

The Grade II Fountain of Youth is a Feb. 28 stepping-stone to the Grade I Florida Derby on March 28.

At this point, we have no idea who is going.

I'm going to break down the contenders in three tiers, BCS-style.

Saratoga Sinner wins the Holy Bull, likely leaps into the top contenders.
WestSideBernie and Beethoven with decent performances from the far outside, still in the mix.

Nothing standing out yet.. Nothing, I'd bet the field in the futures..

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Barbaro's brother Nicanor stunk up the track today. Finishing 9th or 10th way up the track. Can pretty much write him off. Sucks to be the brother without the athletic ability in the family, even if you are a horse.

Bet he can run on the turf

No he didnt.. not really. He broke poor, moved up atletically into midpack while the pace was fast... He flattened out into the lane, and was not ridden out the remainder. Matz is around 3% winners with first out horses.. He will likely be best on turf, but it is way too early to write him off.

Just a note: The great Champion Cigar got run off his feet by more than 15 lengths his first start.. He turned out to be OK.

It took Real Quiet at least 5 or 6 races to break his maiden.. I could really go on and on..

If you watched the race, visually you can see this horse has natural talent.. he pulled himself up easily to the pack and was asking Prado to let him go.. when Prado did, he was empty.. so, now they will take him back and educate him, probably run him on turf the next out.. I expect a massive improvement from what he did Saturday.. Planning on him to be Barbaro is just unfair. :thumbsup

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Read the info on Nicanor today that he bumped the gate. Was basing the prior comment just off the results. Mr. Sanderson's commentary much more accurate on the race.

Like to see him on the turf as well. Doubt he will ever have much value as the money was coming in hand-over-fist on him.

Will keep an eye on him for the future but likely the Derby trail has ended for him.

Good stuff, Mr. Sanderson. That is what is needed in threads like this.:thumbsup

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Here's the Nicanor article, credited to the Downey Profile:

Nicanor Slightly Injured, Finishes Tenth in Debut. Barbaro?s younger full brother Nicanor injured himself slightly leaving the gate, put in a strong mid-race rally, but tired from his efforts and finished tenth of 12 in his eagerly anticipated debut Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

There were high hopes among many for Nicanor. In the early wagering, his odds were 2-5; by the time the gate opened, he was 5-2 and the second choice to Dubinsky's 6-5.

Nicanor is owned by the Lael Stable of Roy and Gretchen Jackson; trained by Michael Matz and ridden by Edgar Prado, the same connections that guided Barbaro to victories in the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby three years ago.

The winner of the race was Warrior?s Reward, who is trained by Ian Wilkes and was ridden by Calvin Borel. Warrior?s Reward paid $63 after scoring by a head over 19-1 Allrightsreserved. Single Malt completed the parade of longshots, finishing third at 44-1. Dubinsky was fourth.

Warrior?s Reward ran the mile in 1:39.69.

Jockey Edgar Prado said, ?He's better than that. I?ve worked him in the mornings, and he showed me a lot . He broke really fast and unfortunately grabbed his left quarter. We?ll just have to see how long it takes to heal, but I know he?s better than that.?

?He grabbed the quarter of the left front leg leaving the gate. He wasn?t comfortable, so Edgar just wrapped up on him,? Matz said.

Entering the walking ring before the race, Nicanor drew a round of applause from a throng of fans, a gesture of goodwill never before seen for a first-time starter.

Saratoga Sinner Off Derby Trail. Sometimes, no sooner does one get their hopes up for a young horse than he's out of action. And so it is with Saratoga Sinner.

The Louisville Courier-Journal is reporting that the Grade III Holy Bull winner came out of the race with a chipped bone in his left knee, and that he's off the Derby Trail.

The colt could return to racing this summer, according to information from trainer Eddie Kenneally cited in the report.

"It's extremely disappointing," Kenneally told Jennie Rees of the Courier "It's hard to get one good enough to win some of these major Derby preps. And then to win one, you still have to be lucky enough to keep them sound. We had one that was good enough, but we can't take him there because of this little bone chip we have to take out. Definitely he fits the profile of a horse who could be a Derby-type horse, but it's unfortunate we can't do it."

Saratoga Sinner, a son of Harlan's Holiday, was bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones. He's owned by Lally Stable, Jack and Louise Lally principals. He had two wins in four starts, having broken his maiden on Jan. 7 before taking the Holy Bull on Saturday.

"He'll return 100 percent, that's the good part, and he'll be a nice horse. It won't shorten his career or take away from his ability," Kenneally said.

The Pamplemousse ive heard this horse talked about ,dont no when hes running

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Pamplemousse just had an official work yesterday. Here's the rundown on him:

THE PAMPLEMOUSSE (KY)
Trainer: Julio Canani
Breeder: Clarkland Farm
Owner: Bienstock and Winner Stable (Ann Winner & Carol Bienstock), Alex Solis II, J. Strauss, T. Lenner, & Davenport
Sire (Sire?s Sire, Dam): Kafwain (Cherokee Run, Swazi's Moment)
Dam (Dam?s Sire, Dam): Comfort Zone (Rubiano, So Cozy)
Dosage Profile (Points) Index: 3-2-10-1-0 (16) 1.67
Foal Date: April 19, 2006

Bought for $150,000 at OBS 2008. Partly owned by the son of jockey Alex Solis. The junior Solis picked out the colt at the sale.

Some of the owners have the Pamplemousse Grill close by Del Mar.

PERFORMANCE AT AGE THREE

Probable next start: the 1 1/8-mile, Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 28.

On Jan. 28, THE PAMPLEMOUSSE breezed three in :36.20 (3/15) at SA.
On Feb. 4, THE PAMPLEMOUSSE worked four in :46.60 (1/39) at SA.Jan. 17, Grade III San Rafael Stakes, Santa Anita, One Mile. The Pamplemousse (second choice at 5-2) went to the lead, resisted a challenge by Square Eddie (3-5), and drew away to win by two lengths under a confident Alex Solis. He was timed in 1:35.31. His initial fractions were :23.04, :45.97 and 1:10.07. The Pamplemousse got just a tap of the whip in the stretch.

Square Eddie, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, ended up 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Ryehill Dreamer with Mike Smith aboard. Late scratches reduced the field to five.

?I?m speechless, I really am,? Solis said. ?This horse has such a high cruising speed. I thought I was going 24 and 48. It feels like he?s walking, he does everything so effortlessly. He was so impressive, when the other horses came to him, he didn?t see them. He heard them, and he just took off.?

?I better start going to church and hope he stays sound,? added the not-so-speechless Solis.

?I was concerned when I saw the early fractions, but he was training unbelievable,? said trainer Canani. ?He?s developing mentally and physically. He?s awkward because he?s growing and growing. He?s huge, but he?s got a great mind, and I?ve got no problems with him. He re-broke in the stretch when Square Eddie came to him, but he?s much better when he follows another horse. I?ll take my time with him. If I run him in the Santa Anita Derby, he may run one more time before that.?

PERFORMANCE AT AGE TWO

After losing two races at six furlongs (fourth place at Santa Anita) and 6 1/2 furlongs (third at Hollywood Park) in October and November, The Pamplemousse was sent two turns in December at Hollywood, and he scored by 2 3/4 lengths after showing good early speed.

In those first two races, he was reserved early and passed horses.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Three big races Saturday with lots of contenders running.

G3 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds is loaded with buzzworthy horses.

G2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita has a strong field as well.

Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct features a few notables.

Could see a bit of a shakeup in the front runners depending on the results.

Thirteen Entered in Risen Star

Posted Feb. 3, 2009

A field of thirteen has been entered in the Grade III Risen Star Stakes, including three from the Steve Asmussen barn and two by trainer J. Larry Jones.

The Asmussen entries are Uno Mas (Worth Watching), who was fourth in the Grade III Lecomte at Fair Grounds; allowance winner Dumar (Worth Watching); and Soul Warrior (Worth Watching), who broke his maiden at Fair Grounds in his most recent start.

But the headliners in the Risen Star are Jones' Lecomte winner Friesan Fire (Looking Good) and Giant Oak (Looking Good), trained by Chris Block, and most recently a close second to Beethoven in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs in November. Jones will also have It Happened Again.

Au Moon (Worth Watching) and Indygo Mountain (Worth Watching), third and sixth respectively in the Lecomte, are back for the Risen Star, trained respectively by David Carroll and Bret Calhoun.

Summer's Empire (Just In Case), an Illinois-bred, is an interesting entry. Anthony Mitchell trains this one, who steps up in class from his Hawthorne days.

Joining Delta Downs' Triple Sec winner It Happened Again is Code of Honour, third in the Triple Sec.

Flying Pegasus (Just In Case) makes his first start since Sept. 13 in the Grade I Futurity at Belmont Park, where he was second by only a length to then-formidable Charitable Man for trainer Ralph Nicks.

Nick Zito's Nowhere to Hide, a maiden winner in his last start, was entered and scratched from the Grade III Holy Bull last Saturday.

Map of the World, trained by Al Stall, Jr. rounds out the field.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Pioneerofthenile wins the Robert Lewis at Santa Anita.

Filly Stardom Bound won the other graded three-year old race there.

Get ready for the hype on those two.

Friesan Fire won the loaded Risen Star at the Fair Grounds.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

Reminder that the Derby Parimutuel Pool #1 will be opening up this weekend.

Recent history suggests that the Field will be the overwhelming favorite.

All Others? Favored In Opening Pool Of Churchill Downs? 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager
posted by CDI on February 10, 2009 Tags: Kentucky Derby Future Wager, Racing
Churchill Downs' 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW") begins its 11th year on Thursday when the first of its three betting pools opens with the mutuel field, or "all others," as the favored betting interest as fans take their shot at picking the winner of the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) months in advance of America's greatest race.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed the "all others" betting interest as the 5-2 favorite in Pool 1, which opens at noon (all times EST) on Thursday, Feb. 12 and concludes at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15. But that's hardly a surprise as the mutuel field has been favored in the KDFW's opening pool in each of the first 10 years of the Derby Future bet. Fans often opt for the "all others" bet rather than make a commitment to an individual horse so early in the Derby campaign and this year's group of contenders seems more wide-open than most.
Among individual horses, Fox Hill Farm's Old Fashioned, winner of last fall's Remsen (GII) at Aqueduct, and Joseph Rauch and David Zell's Capt. Candyman Can, winner of the recent Hutcheson (GII) at Gulfstream Park and the Iroquois (GIII) at Churchill Downs, are co-favored individual interests in Battaglia's morning line at 10-1. That duo is followed by a closely-matched group of young stars at 12-1 that includes 2008 2-year-old champion Midshipman; Stardom Bound, the only filly among the individual betting interests and last year's champion 2-year-old of her gender; Lecomte (GIII) Risen Star (GII) winner Friesan Fire; CashCall Futurity (GI) and Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner Pioneerof the Nile; Champagne (GI) winner Vineyard Haven; and This Ones for Phil, winner of the Sunshine Millions Dash. This Ones For Phil is the lone member of Pool 1 that is not yet nominated to the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown.
Other major contenders in the first of this year's KDFW pools include Beethoven and Giant Oak, the 1-2 finishers in last fall's Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) at Churchill Downs. Both are listed at odds of 15-1.
Kentucky Derby fans will be hoping for generous return on their wager in the Feb. 12-15 pool that would rival the opening pool of 2003, which saw Derby winner Funny Cide return $188 for their $2 Derby Future bet in Pool 1. The Sackatoga Stable star paid only $27.60 for a $2 win bet on Kentucky Derby Day. Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a $2 minimum wager and a "win" bet only.
Betting interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools are selected by a panel that includes Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form national handicapper; Brad Free, West Coast correspondent for the Daily Racing Form; and John Asher, vice president of racing communications at Churchill Downs.
A total of $1,056,520 was wagered on the three Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools in 2008 as total betting on the wager topped the $1 million mark for the ninth consecutive time in its 10-year history. KDFW Pool 2 is scheduled for March 12-15 and the third and final pool will be conducted April 2-5.
Real-time odds on Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are available on the official Kentucky Derby Web site at www.kentuckyderby.com.

Chocolate Candy wins on Valentine's Day, how fitting:

'Too Fresh' Chocolate Candy Wins El Camino Real Derby

Posted Feb. 14, 2009

On Valentine's Day, Chocolate Candy took all the love at the windows and at the finish line in the Grade III El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.

Chocolate Candy, talented and an obvious hunch play, was sent off at 1-2 odds off an even-money morning line, and he delivered the goods, albeit by only a half-length over the stretch-running Massone in the field of six. Rendezvous finished a distant third, beaten five lengths.

Chocolate Candy completed the 1 1/8-mile in 1:50.54 while recording his fourth victory in eight career starts. Ridden by Russell Baze and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Chocolate Candy paid $3.00 after securing his third stakes win.

Chocolate Candy provided Baze with his sixth triumph and Hollendorfer with his fifth win in the El Camino Real Derby.

Aquicksting opened up what soon became a diminishing lead after going the first quarter-mile in :24.11 with a four-length advantage, and the half in :49.11, ahead of Axel Foley by three lengths. Soon after, Chocolate Candy and Axel Foley caught him on the backstretch after running six furlongs in 1:12.65.

Chocolate Candy entered the stretch with a lead after of about one length after running away from Axel Foley on the far turn. Massone, who was six lengths off the six-furlong pace, rallied inside of Chocolate Candy in the lane but came up short.

Connections weren't entirely pleased with the way the winner did it.

?He was a little too fresh today,? said Baze. ?I wanted to tuck in behind (Axel Foley) and save a little ground, but he was too fresh and wouldn?t let me do it. When he took the lead, I was a little concerned if I had enough horse left, but when I asked him he, responded and that was good enough for me. He would have held off (Massone) even if we went around again.?

Hollendorfer, who operates stables in both Northern and Southern California, said Chocolate Candy will soon be shipped to his Santa Anita barn and make his next start at the Arcadia track.

?We want to run in the Santa Anita Derby, but we?ll also look at the San Felipe Stakes,? said Hollendorfer. ?There are different approaches to the Kentucky Derby, but I think the fitter the horse, the better his chance to win. A lot of people go in there with fewer races, but most horses that do well have a foundation under them.?

The Grade II San Felipe Stakes is a 1 1/16-mile race that will be run March 14. The Grade I Santa Anita Derby follows on April 4.

Chocolate Candy is owned by diet queen Jenny Craig, who bred the horse with her late husband, Sid. A Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride, Chocolate Candy earned $120,000 from the $200,000 purse and has made $382,500 in his eight races.

Re: Road to the 2009 Kentucky Derby

In a race that came up ironically light for its first running as a graded stake, the Grade III Sam F. Davis Stakes was dominated by horses with previous races over the track at Tampa Bay Downs, and Gulfstream Park shippers walked away empty-handed.

Trainer Mark Miller and General Quarters, at 13-1 odds, pulled the upset in the $225,00 Davis, earning the horse $135,000 in his first graded race--and setting a stakes record, timed in 1:43.54 for 1 1/16 mile under James Lopez. The track record of 1:43.11 was set by Street Sense in the 2007 Tampa Bay Derby.

The winning team is little-known in racing circles. Miller had only 19 starters in 2008, with one winner, making the Davis the biggest victory of his career, and his only stakes win. The owner, Thomas McCarthy, is a retired Louisville high school principal, and General Quarters is the only horse he has in training. He owns two. McCarthy serves as the colt's groom and trained the colt himself before sending him to Miller.

And the colt himself has an inauspicious background. Bought for $20,000 at the Keeneland September 2007 yearling sale by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, he was claimed by Miller for the same amount from his debut race at Churchill Downs--a race he won, and the sole race he'd won from eight starts before the Davis.

?I?m just real proud of him," Miller said. "He proved a lot today. I?m looking at the Tampa Bay Derby, as long as everything?s OK. That?s the next step.

"Mr. McCarthy got him in Kentucky; I was stabled next to him in Kentucky, and that?s how we met. He sent the horse down here to me, and he just loves it here. He loves the track; this is the best place to be in the winter time. And that?s all we?re trying to do: keep him happy. He seems to be on the improve."

"The next step will possible be the Tampa Bay Derby," McCarthy said amidst the excitement following the Davis, "then the Blue Grass, and then to the Derby."

General Quarters finished second in the Inaugural Stakes and Pasco Stakes, both at Tampa, before the Davis. The second finisher in the Davis, Sumo, had won an allowance race at Tampa just 15 days earlier, and the third-place runner, Musket Man, won the Pasco.

General Quarters had worn front wraps in his four most recent races, but they were off for the Davis.

Of the three top finishers, only Musket Man was a betting contender, sent off at 3-1 odds. Sumo was made 33-1 at the windows, fueling a $2 exacta payoff of $$893.80 and a $1 trifecta payoff of $3,391.80. The $1 superfecta returned $12,906.70.

The 9-5 favorite from Gulfstream Park, Free Country, was fourth, beaten 8 1/4 lengths, after running mid-pack most of the way. A. P. Cardinal and Atomic Rain, also hailing from Gulfstream in their most recent races, finished fifth and seventh at odds of 7-1 and 5-2, respectively.

A. P. Cardinal led for six furlongs in increments of :23.91, :47.77 and 1:12.25 while being pressured from the inside by the winner and from the outside by Sumo before giving way.

Atomic Rain raced evenly in the early going, not far away from Free Country, and had no late response. Meanwhile, General Quarters won by 3 1/2 handy lengths, and Sumo finished three lengths before Musket Man.

?We had a dream run," Lopez said. "I sat in behind the leader and just stayed there until it was time to go and he went! He had stopped on me sprinting in the last two races, but I probably had him on the lead too soon. So I learned something and he learned something. He was just reaching out at the end, and yes, I am sure he can get the next sixteenth. This guy has a big future.?

General Quarters is a Kentucky-bred grey-roan son of Sky Mesa, out of Ecology, by Unbridled's Song. He was bred by Mr. and Mrs. R. David Randal.
