The opening odds start here
St Louis/Washington over 4.5 -125:
The Cardinals (31-43) are playing Washington (27-45) looking for the series sweep. Last night in DC, Wilson Contreras went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 driven in and Dylan Carson crushed 2 HR and drove in 3 as St Louis walloped Washington 9-3. Paul De Jong also homered and drove in 2 while Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored as the Cardinals provided plenty of run support for Jordan Montgomery, who improved to 4-7 overall. The 30 year old 6'6" 6th year southpaw allowed just one run on 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking just one in one of his sharpest starts of the season. Mackenzie Gore took the loss for the Nationals and fell to 3-6 yielding 5 runs on 9 hits through 6 innings, walking 2 and striking out 8. St Louis scored at least one run through the final 5 innings and are now riding a 4 game winning streak. The Nationals have now dropped 5 straight games and will look to salvage one win this afternoon to hopefully stop their slide.

Washington sends Trevor Williams (3-4 4.50) to the hill this afternoon. The 31 year old righty is in his 7th season, and has looked shaky over his past 3 outings, allowing 11 earned and 20 hits over his last 15 IP (6.60) walking 8 and striking out 14. He faces a Cardinals lineup averaging 7.5 runs over it's last 4 games batting .250 overall this season averaging 4.7 runs per game hitting 105 HR, third in the NL. Nolan Arenado (.271 15 50) far and away leads the club in power and production tied for third in RBI's with Francisco Lindor despite a 3 for 22 slump (.136) over his last 5 games Nolan Gorman (.231 15 46) is tied for the team lead in HR and is second in RBI. The second baseman however leads the team with 80 strikeouts and is mired in a 6 game hitless streak over his last 23 at bats. Paul Goldschmidt (291 13 38) leads the team in batting having hit safely over his last 4 games (.350) with 2 HR and 7 RBI over that stretch. Brendan Donovan (.274 7 21) is making the most of his opportunities and carries a 9 game hitting streak (.390( with a homer and 5 RBI over that stretch. Tommy Edman (.237 7 29) has 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts (93%) and is batting (.333) over his last 4 games. Contreras (.210 8 31) broke a 3 for 21 slump (.143) with his 3 hits on Tuesday.

St. Louis counters with Miles Mikolas (4-4 4.36) who, like Williams, has experienced lots of ups and downs featured in his starts. The 6'4" righty is in his 7th major league season. Mikolas has been anything but sharp as of late surrendering 13 earned and 25 hits over his last 17 IP (6.88) walking 3 and striking out 5. He faces a Nationals lineup batting .261 overall good for 3rd in the NL, but is averaging only 4 runs per contest while last in the NL with 54 HR. Joey Memses (.295 2 35) leads the Nats in hitting but has shown a lack of power at the DH spot. He just saw his 4 game hitting streak end batting .333 over that stretch. Lane Thomas (.290 11 36) leads Washington in power and production and brings an 8 game hitting streak into tonight's contest, with a .375 clip over that stretch. Luis Garcia (.280 5 33) is third on the team in RBI and is batting .320 over his last 6 games where he has hit safely. Jeimer Candelario (.256 8 30) just saw a 4 game hitting streak go by the waist side but is still batting .400 over his last 5 games. One thing this Nationals team does not do is run as they have amassed just 36 stolen bases all season led by Victor Rbles' 8.

We get a rather expensive price this evening for game 3 at Nationals Park. Showers are expected with warm temps in the forecast which has temps around 80 for first pitch with winds blowing out at 15mph. Both starters seem to be adhering their struggles and if we do expect any delays tonight, with any longevity could be decided by the bullpens. Both clubs have spent lots of time struggling in their respective cellars but something has to give as these teams are moving in opposite directions despite subpar seasons. Speaking of an up and down campaign, I've traded wins and losses over my last 4 plays here, so we hope to get back on the winning side this afternoon with the main focus being a tiring but so far better than expected grand challenge. Best of luck however you play!
