In rural San Bernardino county, there are several places like this, where people come by and tie their old shoes to a fence. You can't see them, but I put an old pair of dress shoes that I wore in college on it a few years ago.
It's weird because these things are always in the middle of nowhere.

Something like this used to happen a lot in NYC years ago.People would take their old "sneakers",tie them together by the laces,and toss them in the air so they would hang over the utility lines on the street.Pairs of shoes would be all over the place,it was a sort of marking urban territory.Don't see it as much anymore:
