the remains appear to be that of a miners hooch, assuming there was mining in the area at one time

Yes, exactly. Rural Nevada is filled with abandoned settlements that were inhabited for a few years, but became ghost towns as soon as the mining dried up. The buildings just sit there, slowly decaying.
I've visited quite a few. People who aren't from here wouldn't believe how many of these old towns there are in Nevada.

Not sure if anyone's following, but next road trip starts Sunday night, and I will be visiting places that the Google car has never seen.

I thought I had a great trip planned for the All-star break. I had a list of 12 ghost towns I had never been to, and I was going to visit several a day, before heading up to northeast Nevada to play in two casino promotions.
Started by heading north on 93. It's a long stretch of nothing between Vegas and Alamo. Whenever I take this highway, I always stare west while I'm driving. Several years ago, I was online friends with someone named Kenny Veach. I commented on some of his youtube videos, and traded a few emails about places we had both visited.
Then this happened:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/5qcwr3/what_happened_to_kenny_veach/

It's a mystery that will clearly never be solved, but this stretch of road will always haunt me.
From there, I took the Extraterrestrial highway to Rachel and stopped at the Little Ale Inn. Took a few pictures and drove 20 miles up the road. There was a turn off for Reveille. It was a very haggard dirt road that I'm probably stupid for taking since I don't have cell reception in that part of the state. After ten miles, I get to Reveille.
There is only one building still standing, and about 8-10 stone foundations. I took pictures and headed back to the highway.
10 miles further at the junction of Highway 6 is Warm Springs, which is nothing but an abandoned store with six crumbling stone buildings. Because of its location, plenty of people stop for pictures. There's a dirt road just east of Warm Springs that heads due south, directly into the National Wild Horse Management area. After 16 miles, I get to Eden, an abandoned mining town. There's plenty of debris and old mining equipment still there, and humorous, two old stoves riddled with bullet holes. Took more pictures of everything.
Headed back to 6, and started looking for another dirt road headed south, that according to my notes was 5 miles west. There are four more ghost towns on that road that are supposedly very worth the trip. Also, the southernmost one is supposedly right on the northern fence of Area 52, so people who have visited there have said you might run into armored guards there. I wound up spending more than an hour trying to find the road, and there was nothing but an endless barbed wire fence. GPS is no help, outside of suggesting I drive through the fence and off road.
I turn back on 6 and head to Curant, and take 379 north to Duckwater. It's one of the few towns in Nevada I've never visited.
The road goes back to being unpaved for 30 miles, and I arrive in Eureka. I spend two hours walking from one side of town to another and then visiting the museum.
Take 50 to 392, and headed north. Passed through Strawberry, another town I'd never visited, and the road goes unpaved just before entering the Toiyabe National Forest.
I drive around Ruby Lake and Shantytown, and then abruptly the road goes back to being paved. 228 takes me into Elko, and I meet my friend for the first casino promo.
To make a short story shorter, my camera broke, and I think i lost all pictures I had taken to that point.
Two days in Elko seemed like a month, and I started heading east. Passed through a town called Deeth that seemed abandoned, but I got the feeling that someone was around, so I was careful not to trespass. Headed north from Wells to Metropolis. Then went back to 80 and made it Wendover.

You see where Cerro Gordo in Inyo County just sold for 1.4M. Guy is going to rehab it. Interesting.
