A few years ago, MRBOWLING300 spotted me 50 pins and still won going away.

I was smart enough to leave my wallet at home.

A memorable night at the Orleans bowling center, 2nd floor right above the casino floor. It was you, me and Spartan Mike, after bowling, off to do the EOG radio show, and then post bowling/radio show dinner at some dive bar! Fun times!

My bro and I grew up bowling in leagues at least once a week. Once I turned 18 we could bowl in "Adult/Junior" leagues where one person had to be an adult and 1 couldn't. I was 18 and he was 15. We won a million first place trophies.

I'll never forget the one night we played some team and the adult was on fire. He had a perfect game thru 8 frames. Word filtered thru the place and next thing I know almost everyone in the place was there watching him (and us - waiting for us to be done so he could bowl). He got a solid 10 pin on his 9th frame shot an finished with a 279.

Closest I ever got to seeing a 300 game in person. Sadly. Because of it we ended up dropping 3 of the 4 games that night to one of the worst teams in the league

That must have been thrilling! One of my most memorable bowling nights was not when I shot 300, but when I made a run at 300. I was bowling at a small 24 lane center that has since closed. This was back in 1995, when 300s were not as common. I started with the first 9 strikes in a row. By then word had gotten around the center that a 300 game was going on. The entire place literally stopped and gathered around to watch my 10th frame. I was subbing for a buddy, and both leagues were below average people, so 300 was very rare to them. I got the first two strikes, with a roar of the crowd after each shot. The final ball with 11 in a row was perfect, I thought I had the strike for sure, but no, a solid 7 pin cost me the 300 and I ended up with 299. As the final shot left 1 pin standing, you could hear the disappointment of the crowd! It was one of my finest bowling moments. The female bowlers from the league next to us were cute and were congratulating me, who knows, I could have made a play on one of them and gotten luckier that night, lol. The owner of the lanes went down and grabbed the pin and presented it to me. I've attached a picture of the pin. These days, 300s are so common, it truly has become no big deal for a lot of bowlers. Each night in my Tuesday summer league there is one. No one ever crowds around to watch anymore like they once did.

Great story, 300.

I liked the line about the "roar from the crowd."

Forget the picture of the 7-pin, I need the picture of the cuties in the next lane.

It was. But at the same point in time I wasn't happy to see him do it against our team.

Here is a video of one of my 300 games, you will see the 10th, 11th and 12th strikes to complete the perfect game. This was from 4/15/2014. I showed up after a brutal tax season, didn't even think I had the energy to bowl that night. I went straight from work and didn't even change clothes, lol. I was also about 35 pounds heavier then than I am now!

That night I shot 235 300 269 for a 804 series.

ComptrBob,:

I'm curious how other members of the forum have performed in this contest during 2021 through July. If you can post the member, and their record, that would be great. Thanks, MB3

Great question. I think Computer Bob posted this once. It wasn’t pretty. Something like 18 winners out of 120

Thank you very much!

I bet you would be a great statistician for the National Weather Service!

The progression of the month reminds me of trying to bowl a 300 game. In bowling, as you get a string of strikes going and as the game progresses, each new frame brings on just a little bit more pressure than the last. In that situation, it is very important to keep your focus and to stay in the moment (i.e., don't think ahead, concentrate on the current frame and making the best shot execution as possible). It feels the same for this contest as well. I'm finding the same principles apply to this contest as the month moves on. The proverbial one day at a time applies. I'm 8-5, and with each new day, there is a bit more pressure to find a selection that gives you the best chance to be successful. I have my process of elimination to find that selection. For today, my goal is to keep my focus on making a great 14th pick, and not worry about what happens or needs to happen the rest of the month.

Just a few thoughts about how I approached the GC.

1) If you can pick the month that you are competing, you should be able to have selections from which you have a higher win%. As I recall, the month I won (Feb, 2016), I got a call from JK the morning of Feb 1. asking if I would fill in for the scheduled capper that bailed out. So this angle didn't help me. LOL

2) One GC advantage is the game picked on a day only needs to be played that month. Look at the month for weak days, possible overnight picks and games to be scheduled in advance (e.g. football generally available for 6 or more days). In Feb, I generally avoided picking a Friday CBB game and took an overnight Sat game instead.

3) If you get one push along the way, the 2nd push is like a win, so if you are x-y-1, consider a side or total where the push % adds to your overall win% for contest purposes. Conversely, try to minimize the % of a first push if at all possible.

4) This is a very tough challenge, don't be overly concerned with streaks. A very good capper may hit 55% against -110 on average without the constraint of a play a day. You need luck to get to 60% and beat the GC. I had a 5 game losing stretch (went from 12-5 to 12-10) on my way to 18-12.

Just wanted to add these thoughts to MB300 above.

It's refreshing seeing you still with a decent shot at winning the dime.

The other summer contestants were dead money before the 2nd half of their month.
